A key component to achieving the global goal of elimination of lymphatic filariasis (LF) is the availability of appropriate tools for disease mapping, monitoring, and surveillance. However, the development of these tools for a neglected disease such as LF can be a challenge. The lack of a commercial market and low familiarity with these diseases leave little incentive for diagnostic manufacturers to invest in this space. The Filarial Test Strip (FTS) development story provides a case study on how a multi-stakeholder, public-private partnership model facilitated the development, evaluation, and

Diagnosis of Lymphatic Filariasis by microscopic examination of thick blood films (TBF) collected between 8.30 pm to 12 midnight, though highly specific is operationally problematic. We evaluated the TropBio Og4C3 serum ELISA as a tool for detection of W. bancrofti microfilaria carriers using Dried Blood Spots (DBS). The study was carried out in two parts (i) to test the sensitivity and specificity of the ELISA test for detection of circulating filarial antigen (CFA) in microfilaria (Mf) carriers vis-à-vis the conventional thick blood film (TBF) microscopy and its persistence in different cate

In an eleven months study of eleven communities of Darazo Local Government Area of Bauchi state, northern Nigeria, 293 (21.7) of 1,349 persons examined harboured various filarial parasites. Of the sampled population, 18%, 1.9%, 1.6%, 0.5% and 0.2% had microfilariae of Onchocerca volvulus, Wuchereria bancrofti, Mansonella perstans, M. streptocerca and Loa loa respectively. Of the 637 females examined, 90 (14.1%) were infected, while 203 (23.5%) of 712 males sampled had filarial infections. The high rate in males was significant (P < 0.001). O. volvulus mf-rate increased gradually from the first

Filariasis is an endemic infection caused by nematodes Wuchereria bancrofti and Brugya malayi, highly prevalent in Bihar, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The disease mainly affects the lymphatics, both channels and nodes. Breast filariasis is rather uncommon, and might mimic a neoplastic breast lump.

Human filariasis caused by Wuchereria bancrofti and Brugia malayi continues to circulate within Northern and Central Thailand and Southern Thailand, respectively. Major clinical presentations comprise lymphedema of extremities, hydrocele, funiculitis, orchitis, and tropical pulmonary eosinophilia. Microfilaria in other organs is rare. We report an unusual case of a 48-year-old woman from Southern Thailand with parotid filariasis presenting with chronic parotid gland enlargement. Wuchereria bancrofti microfilaria was observed within cytologic smear samples from the swollen left parotid gland an

Some military organizations in the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM) give returning soldiers presumptive treatment for filariasis. As there have been few clinical cases in recent decades, the historical basis for this chemotherapy was reviewed. During the Second World War, U.S. Marines stationed on Polynesian islands such as Tonga, Samoa, and Fiji experienced clinical lymphatic filariasis. Although thousands of both U.S. and Australian soldiers served in New Guinea, few, if any, cases of lymphatic filariasis were ascribed to Melanesia. While the French Army reported dozens of cases of fila

Lymphatic filariasis is a neglected tropical disease that affects the lymphatic system of humans. The major etiologic agent is a nematode called Wuchereria bancrofti, but Brugia malayi and Brugia timoriare sometimes encountered as causative agents. Mosquitoes are the vectors while humans the definitive hosts respectively. The burden of the disease is heavier in Nigeria than in other endemic countries in Africa. This occurs with increasing morbidity and mortality at different locations within the country, the World Health Organization recommended treatments for lymphatic filariasis include the

The report presents a case of subconjunctival filariasis in a 20-year-old female student who schools in Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State, a known loa loa endemic region in Nigeria, and resident in Abuja. The patient presented on the 20th of February 2020, with a history of foreign body sensation and itching on two occasions within a 6-month period and had video evidence of a worm in her left eye. The worm was however not visualized in the clinic. She was placed on tabs Albendazole 20mg twice daily for 21 days and has not felt or seen the worm since she completed the medications. Subconjunctival filarias

In an endemic country like India, the occurrence of filariasis is very common, especially in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. The present study describes the case of a male from a nonendemic state who presented with a testicular lump. Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of the lump revealed many adult filarial worms. The appearance of adult filarial worms in different sites, other than lymph nodes and lymphatic vessels, are relatively rarer and should always be reported. Filariasis remains asymptomatic for a long time and responds very w

Lymphatic filariasis is an infection transmitted by blood-sucking mosquitoes with filarial nematodes of the species Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi und B. timori . It is prevalent in tropical countries throughout the world, with more than 60 million people infected and more than 1 billion living in areas with the risk of transmission. Worm larvae with a length of less than 1 mm are transmitted by mosquitoes, develop in human lymphatic tissue to adult worms with a length of 7-10 cm, live in the human body for up to 10 years and produce millions of microfilariae, which can be transmitted fur

In May 2017, a hen in a backyard chicken flock in Japan exhibited mild clinical signs, and the bird was examined for diagnosis. Unexpectedly, many microfilariae were observed in the lung by histologic examination, although no adult worms were detected within the body. In a blood test performed in July, microfilaremia was confirmed in a few clinically normal chickens of the same flock. Molecular analysis of the nematode partial 18S ribosomal RNA gene revealed that the gene detected in the lung of the necropsied hen was positioned in the group of the family Onchocercidae in the phylogenetic tree

Primary retroperitoneal parasitic cysts are rare. Here we report about a middle aged male patient from rural north India with a recent onset of central abdominal retroperitoneal lump, pain, and fever. After surgical resection due to diagnostic uncertainty, at histopathology, it turned out be a filarial cyst. After receiving a course of diethylcarbamazine, the patient is asymptomatic at 4 months' follow-up.

Filariasis is traditionally diagnosed following screening of peripheral smear for microfilaria. Clinically lymphatic filariasis mimics the common local diseases. Thus, it is plausible to observe this parasitic infection in histological sections. We encountered three such cases, which displayed diverse patterns of immune response. Presence of both dead and viable worm at the same foci suggests that such immune response could be the result of parasitic death. Histological features such as endothelial injury and granulomatous response attests to the role of Wolbachia bacteria in influencing tissu

China used to be one of the most heavily endemic countries for lymphatic filariasis (LF) in the world. There were 864 endemic counties/cities in 16 provinces/autonomous regions/municipalities (P/A/M) with a total population of 330 million at risk of infection. Since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, the Chinese Government has designated the control of the disease to be a top priority. Due to decades of sustained efforts, close cooperation related to LF control among government departments, and active participation of endemic populations, an all-round campaign for preventi

Lymphatic filariasis is an important tropic disease associated with significant morbidity. The patients in endemic areas mostly experience problems related to lymphatic obstruction. Physicians practicing in non- endemic areas rarely consider filariasis, especially if it is an uncommon presentation. We present a young woman who posed a significant problem in the diagnosis of ovarian filariasis.

Filariasis is an endemic disease in tropical and subtropical countries. Filarial nematodes can infect humans through vectors, commonly mosquitoes. Human infection can manifest as lymphatic filariasis, subcutaneous or pulmonary nodules and with eye involvement. Intra-oral presentation is very rare and often poses a diagnostic dilemma to the dentist. We report a case of intra-oral Dirofilaria repens infection in a 54-year-old female patient, involving the buccal mucosa. History was unremarkable and on clinical examination, a diffuse swelling with no significant signs and symptoms was seen. Labor

Cytological demonstration of microfilaria and adult worms often helps in diagnosis of asymptomatic filarial cases. But demonstration of microfilaria in cytological smears from upper extremity lesions is seldom reported. We are presenting a 32-year-old female patient with elongated, small subcutaneous swelling in the medial aspect of right lower arm. Aspirates from the lesion demonstrate microfilaria though there is no eosinophilia or microfilaremia on subsequent examination of blood sample. In endemic areas, filariasis should always be considered as a possible diagnosis during cytological asse
