The Sleep Quality of Han Chinese and Tibetan Firefighters at High Altitude: A Field Study.

BACKGROUND: The sleep quality of Han Chinese and Tibetan firefighters at high altitude remains poorly understood. This study investigates the prevalence of sleep disturbances in these groups and whether ethnicity affects sleep quality in these two populations. METHODS: Male firefighters were recruited from China Fire and Rescue stations at high altitude of 500 m, 2570 m, and 4509 m in Southwest China. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) assessed sleep quality, considering scores >5 as poor sleep quality. Symptoms of anxiety and depression were evaluated using the 7-item Generalized Anxi…

Acute cardiovascular changes following heat exposure during simulated shipboard firefighting.

Like structural firefighting, shipboard firefighting requires extreme exertion. However, shipboard firefighting may be a unique cardiovascular stress as most sailors lack extensive firefighting experience and may complete significant work before reaching the fire scene. Several indices of acute cardiovascular impairment have been associated with the high prevalence of sudden cardiac death among structural firefighters. However, acute cardiovascular responses to shipboard firefighting have yet to be described. The aim of this study was to investigate cardiac, macrovascular and microvascular res…

Is healthy sleep possible for professional firefighters? A comparison of "On-Duty" and "Off-Duty" sleep.

OBJECTIVES: Healthy sleep is vital for firefighter safety, health, wellness, and for public well-being. However, professional firefighters experience disturbed sleep at disproportionately high rates. The current study investigated firefighter sleep in terms of (1) differences in on-duty and off-duty sleep, (2) risk factors for poor sleep, and (3) whether risk factors differed for on-duty and off-duty sleep. METHODS: Professional firefighters from a large, urban fire department in central Virginia (N = 268) reported their sleep using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index both on- and off-duty. Pa…

Effect of a High-Intensity Circuit Training Program on the Physical Fitness of Wildland Firefighters.

Wildland firefighting implies high physical and psychological demands for the personnel involved. Therefore, good physical fitness can help increase the work efficiency of wildland firefighters (WFFs) and safeguard their health. High-intensity circuit training (HICT) could be a good alternative to improve the physical condition of WFFs since it stands out for its functionality and economy. Therefore, the objective of this study was to analyze the effects of HICT on the WFFs' physical fitness. The study involved 9 WFFs (8 males and 1 female; 29.8 ± 2.8 years; 175.6 ± 6.7 cm) who completed a tra…

Firefighter exposures to organic and inorganic gas emissions in emergency residential and industrial fires.

The gas emissions generated from fires could cause mortalities and diseases in firefighters. Gas emissions from fire contain a mixture of a wide range of organic and inorganic gases, depending on several elements that are not currently known. In this study, firefighters were equipped with portable gas detectors to measure selected organic and inorganic gases in 26 emergency fire incidents. The fire incidents were categorized as industrial or residential based on their source. The exposure of firefighters to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in residential fires was double that in industrial fi…

Associations of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) exposures and firefighting experience with microRNA signatures previously linked to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS): a cross-sectional analysis of active-duty municipal and airport firefighters.

BACKGROUND: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disorder with unclear etiology in sporadic cases. Blood microRNA (miRNA) expression varies between individuals with and without ALS. Firefighters may face elevated ALS risks due to occupational exposures, including elevated serum per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) concentrations. METHODS: This study investigates the association between occupational firefighter characteristics (years of experience, incumbent status (binary; 1=incumbent, 0=recruit), serum PFAS) and ALS-relevant miRNA expression in U.S. firefigh…

Does past military experience impact fear reactivity in active-duty firefighters? Well, it is complicated.

OBJECTIVE: A significant proportion of military veterans successfully transition out of the military into civilian careers as first responders, such as firefighters. Like military service, being a firefighter is a high-risk profession involving exposure to aversive environments. Thus, it is possible that military experience might serve to buffer or exacerbate risk for negative psychological outcomes in firefighters. However, both occupations are associated with increased risk for psychopathology, such as PTSD, and little research has examined the effect of military service on processes that un…

Sleep Paralysis among Professional Firefighters and a Possible Association with PTSD-Online Survey-Based Study.

The prevalence of sleep paralysis (SP) is estimated at approximately 7.6% of the world's general population. One of the strongest factors in the onset of SP is PTSD, which is often found among professional firefighters. Our study aimed to assess in the professional firefighter population (n = 831) (1) the prevalence of SP, (2) the relationship between SP and PTSD and (3) the relationship between SP and other factors: the severity of the stress felt, individual tendency to feel anxious and worried and lifestyle variables. The incidence of SP in the study group was 8.7%. The high probability of …
