Fine motor deficits exhibited in rat string-pulling behavior following exposure to sleep fragmentation and deep space radiation.

Deep space flight missions will expose astronauts to multiple stressors, including sleep fragmentation and space radiation. There is debate over whether sleep disruptions are an issue in deep space. While these stressors independently impair sensorimotor function, the combined effects on performance are currently unknown. String-pulling behavior involves highly organized bimanual reach-to-grasp and withdraw movements. This behavior was examined under rested wakeful conditions and immediately following one session of sleep fragmentation in Sham and irradiated rats 3 months after exposure (10 cG

Cerebellar morphology and behavioural correlations of the vestibular function alterations in weightlessness.

In humans and other vertebrates, the range of disturbances and behavioural changes induced by spaceflight conditions are well known. Sensory organs and the central nervous system (CNS) are forced to adapt to new environmental conditions of weightlessness. In comparison with peripheral vestibular organs and behavioural disturbances in weightlessness conditions, the CNS vestibular centres of vertebrates, including the cerebellum, have been poorly examined in orbital experiments, as well as in experimental micro- and hypergravity. However, the cerebellum serves as a critical control centre for le

Mechanisms of flight loss in Island endemic stag beetle Prosopocoilus hachijoensis (Coleoptera: Lucanidae): a comparative analysis of flight and walking traits among congeners.

Flight is a crucial locomotion strategy in insects, facilitating predator avoidance, foraging, and mating. However, when its energetic costs outweigh the benefits, flight capabilities can be lost secondarily. Flight loss has been studied in species exhibiting intraspecific polymorphisms, whereas both proximate and ultimate factors remain poorly understood in monomorphically flightless species. This study investigates the mechanisms of flight loss in Prosopocoilus hachijoensis, a flightless stag beetle, through comparison with flight-capable Prosopocoilus species. We hypothesized that flight mu

The catecholamine response to graded high-altitude flight in yellow-rumped warblers (Setophaga coronata).

Chronic exposure to low oxygen (hypoxia) leads to amplification of the hypoxic chemoreflex, increasing breathing and sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activation. Prolonged SNS activation redistributes blood to hypoxia-sensitive tissues away from muscles. Recent tracking studies have shown that migratory songbirds can fly 5,000 m or higher above sea level, leading us to hypothesize that migratory birds may have a blunted hypoxic chemoreflex to maintain blood flow to muscles during migratory flight at high altitudes. To test this hypothesis, we used a hypobaric wind tunnel and measured circulati

Bottom-up butterfly model with thorax-pitch control and wing-pitch flexibility.

The diversity in butterfly morphology has attracted many people around the world since ancient times. Despite morphological diversity, the wing and body kinematics of butterflies have several common features. In the present study, we constructed a bottom-up butterfly model, whose morphology and kinematics are simplified while preserving the important features of butterflies. The present bottom-up butterfly model is composed of two trapezoidal wings and a rod-shaped body with a thorax and abdomen. Its wings are flapped downward in the downstroke and backward in the upstroke by changing the geom

Videographic analysis of flight behaviours of host-seeking Anopheles arabiensis towards BG-Malaria trap.

The BG-Malaria trap (BGM) is an adaptation of the well-known BG-Sentinel trap (BGS) with greater trapping efficiencies for anopheline and culicine mosquitoes. Its continued optimization requires greater understanding of mosquito flight behaviors near it. We used three high-resolution infrared cameras (68 frames/second) to track flight behaviors of laboratory-reared Anopheles arabiensis females in vicinity of the BGM in comparison with BGS. Additional comparisons were done for BGM at 20, 40 and 80cm heights, and for BGMs baited with Ifakara blend plus CO2, CO2 alone, or no bait. More mosquitoes

Wing kinematics measurement and aerodynamics of a dragonfly in turning flight.

This study integrates high-speed photogrammetry, 3D surface reconstruction, and computational fluid dynamics to explore a dragonfly (Erythemis Simplicicollis) in free flight. Asymmetric wing kinematics and the associated aerodynamic characteristics of a turning dragonfly are analyzed in detail. Quantitative measurements of wing kinematics show that compared to the outer wings, the inner wings sweep more slowly with a higher angle of attack during the downstroke, whereas they flap faster with a lower angle of attack during the upstroke. The inner-outer asymmetries of wing deviations result in a

Calcification of the lower respiratory tract in relation to flight development in Jamaican fruit bats (Phyllostomidae, Artibeus jamaicensis).

The production of echolocation calls in bats along with forces produced by contraction of thoracic musculature used in flight presumably puts relatively high mechanical loads on the lower respiratory tract (LRT). Thus, there are likely adaptations to prevent collapse or distortion of the bronchial tree and trachea during flight in echolocating bats. By clearing and staining (Alcian blue and Alizarin red) LRTs removed from nonvolant neonates, semivolant juveniles, volant subadults, and adult Jamaican fruit bats (Artibeus jamaicensis), I found that calcification of the tracheal, primary bronchia

Flight capacity of adult Culex pipiens pallens (Diptera: Culicidae) in relation to gender and day-age.

Culex pipiens pallens (L.) is the most common mosquito in houses of central and northern China. It is the primary vector of lymphatic filariasis and Japanese encephalitis. The flight range of mosquitoes is an important factor predicting the risk area of transmission of mosquito-borne pathogens to vertebrate hosts. The flight performance of Cx. pipiens pallens was measured with a 26-channel computer-monitored flight-mill system. We found that females had longer flight capability than males for total flight distance (TFD) and total flight duration (TFDr), and females flew faster than males based

Loft features reveal the functioning of the young pigeon's navigational system.

It is thought that young homing pigeons are able to use information acquired en route for their initial homeward orientation. However, the cues involved and mechanisms utilised are under discussion. Blocking light-dependent route-specific information during the first leg of an outward journey detour, together with analysis of pigeons that were raised under different loft conditions, allowed us to correctly evaluate the functioning of this mechanism and, more generally, the navigational map of birds. Pigeons from the same stock were raised and kept in two different lofts. The birds in the exper

Visual adaptation of a biting fly that permanently foregoes flight.

Sensory systems are essential for behaviour, but energetically expensive. Selection favours accurate coding of pertinent stimuli and penalises excess functionality, but selective pressures can change over an organism's life. The dipteran superfamily Hippoboscoidea includes obligate blood-feeding flies with greatly varying ecologies, from fast-flying, free-living, visually oriented tsetse, to flightless, ectoparasitic, non-visual bat flies. Deer keds (Lipoptena andaluciensis, Diptera: Hippoboscidae) combine these lifestyles by flying to seek hosts based at least partly on vision, and then break

Subarctic Drosophila species cold-acclimated in laboratory maintain full capacity for oxygen consumption in their flight muscle mitochondria.

Mitochondria play a central role in energy metabolism and cellular survival, yet their seasonal adaptations in insects enduring prolonged dormancy remain poorly understood. We investigated whether winter-like lab acclimation alters mitochondrial density/abundance and respiratory capacity in the flight muscles of three Drosophila species from subarctic climatic zone and D. melanogaster. Flies were acclimated to either warm (20 °C and long day) or cold (3 °C and short day) conditions, and mitochondrial traits were assessed using microCT, microscopy, molecular proxies of mtDNA abundance, and high

RNA-Seq reveals flight-induced changes in cerebellar transcriptomic profiles of racing pigeons.

The avian cerebellum is pivotal for multisensory integration and motor control during flight, yet its molecular adaptation to prolonged exertion remains incompletely defined. We profiled cerebellar transcriptomes of ten racing pigeons before and after a 300-km homing flight using whole-transcriptome RNA sequencing. Differential expression analysis revealed robust remodeling of metabolic and proteostatic pathways, including upregulation of SLC35D2, consistent with enhanced UDP-GlcNAc flux through the hexosamine biosynthetic pathway aligned with birds' naturally high glycaemia. Increased VLDLR e

Solar radiation alters heat balance and thermoregulation in a flying desert bee.

Solar radiation is an important environmental variable for terrestrial animals, but its impact on the heat balance of large flying insects has been poorly studied. Desert bees are critical to ecosystem function through their pollination services, and are exposed to high radiant loads. We assessed the role of solar radiation in the heat balance of flying desert Centris pallida bees by calculating heat budgets for individuals in a respirometer in shaded versus sunny conditions from 16 to 37°C air temperatures, comparing the large and small male morphs and females. Solar radiation was responsible

The Organization of Central Retinal Projections in Anna's Hummingbirds (Calypte anna) and Zebra Finches (Taeniopygia castanotis).

Hummingbirds (family Trochilidae) are easily recognized due to their unique ability to hover. Critical to hovering flight is head and body stabilization. In birds, stabilization during flight is mediated, among other things, by the detection of optic flow, the motion that occurs across the entire retina during self-motion. Given this increased requirement for stabilization, it is not surprising that previous studies have shown that hummingbirds have neural specializations in the visual pathways involved in the detection of optic flow. Particularly, previous studies have found some structural a

A twist of the tail in turning maneuvers of bird-inspired drones.

A banked turn is a common flight maneuver observed in birds and aircraft. To initiate the turn, whereas traditional aircraft rely on the wing ailerons, most birds use a variety of asymmetric wing-morphing control techniques to roll their bodies and thus redirect the lift vector to the direction of the turn. Nevertheless, when searching for prey, soaring raptors execute steady banked turns without exhibiting observable wing movements apart from the tail twisting around the body axis. Although tail twisting can compensate for adverse yaw, functioning similarly to the vertical tail in aircraft, h

An annotated dataset of bioacoustic sensing and features of mosquitoes.

As vectors of malaria, dengue, zika, and yellow fever, mosquitoes are considered one of the more severe worldwide health hazards. Widespread surveillance of mosquitoes is essential for understanding their complex ecology and behaviour, and also for predicting and formulating effective control strategies against mosquito-borne diseases. One technique involves using bioacoustics to automatically identify different species from their wing-beat sounds during flight. In this dataset, we collect sounds of three species of mosquitoes: Aedes Aegypti, Culex Quinquefasciatus & Pipiens, and Culiseta. The

Hawks steer attacks using a guidance system tuned for close pursuit of erratically manoeuvring  targets.

Aerial predators adopt a variety of different hunting styles, with divergent flight morphologies typically adapted either to high-speed interception or manoeuvring through clutter, but how are their sensorimotor systems tuned in relation to habitat structure and prey behavior? Falcons intercept prey at high-speed using the same proportional navigation guidance law as homing missiles. This classical guidance law works well in the open, but performs sub-optimally against highly-manoeuvrable targets, and may not produce a feasible path through the cluttered environments frequented by hawks and ot

Contractile properties of the pigeon supracoracoideus during different modes of flight.

The supracoracoideus (SUPRA) is the primary upstroke muscle for avian flight and is the antagonist to the downstroke muscle, the pectoralis (PECT). We studied in vivo contractile properties and mechanical power output of both muscles during take-off, level and landing flight. We measured muscle length change and activation using sonomicrometry and electromyography, and muscle force development using strain recordings on the humerus. Our results support a hypothesis that the primary role of the SUPRA is to supinate the humerus. Antagonistic forces exerted by the SUPRA and PECT overlap during po
