PURPOSE: To assess the outcome of trabeculectomy supplemented with intraoperative 5-Fluorouracil (5 FU) application in glaucoma patients.
METHODS: A prospective non-randomized case series of 76 eyes of 76 consecutive patients who underwent trabeculectomy with intraoperative sponge 5 FU (25 mg/ml). Minimum follow-up was 6 months. There were 31 eyes in the low-risk group and 45 eyes in the high-risk group. The reduction in intraocular pressure (IOP) and any treatment complications were noted.

Adjuvant chemotherapy in colorectal cancer patients is aimed at decreasing the relapse rate of the disease and increasing the disease-free and the overall survival of the patients. In a prospective study we evaluated the efficacy of 5-FU plus levamisole as an aduvant therapy for 153 patients with Dukes' B-2 or C colon or rectal cancer following a curative-intended surgery. Adjuvant chemotherapy was started within 4 to 6 weeks following the operation. 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) has been reported to cause punctal-canalicular fibrosis with resultant severe epiphora. It is reported that the epiphora will often resolve when treatment ceases or is decreased. However, this report describes a case of punctal-canalicular fibrosis so severe that bilateral conjunctivodacryocystorhinostomies were necessary. This has not been previously reported to the best of the authors' knowledge. It is recommended that ophthalmic consultation be obtained for patients in whom long-term 5-FU therapy is anticipated or who develop tearing while on therapy.
