Consciousness recovery induced by intrathecal baclofen administration after subarachnoid hemorrhage -two case reports-.

Two patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage recovered consciousness after intrathecal baclofen administration using an implanted intrathecal baclofen pump delivering 50 microg per day using a simple infusion mode. Intrathecal baclofen resulted in significant reduction of spasticity 3 months after the implantation. Case 1 was reduced to a completely bedridden state with spasticity and could slightly move her fingers following commands. However, the patient could eat food and wash her face with minimal assistance at 3 months after the implantation, and could stand up in the parallel bars with assi

Contribution of thickened drinks, food and enteral and parenteral fluids to fluid intake in hospitalised patients with dysphagia.

BACKGROUND: Studies amongst older people with acute dysphagic stroke requiring thickened fluids have assessed fluid intakes from combinations of beverage, food, enteral and parenteral sources, but not all sources simultaneously. The present study aimed to comprehensively assess total water intake from food, beverages, enteral and parenteral sources amongst dysphagic adult in-patients receiving thickened fluids. METHODS: Patients requiring thickened fluid following dysphagia diagnosis were recruited consecutively from a tertiary teaching hospital's medical and neurosurgical wards. Fluid intake

Informing the Next Chapter of SNAP Policy: Lessons from SNAP Participants' Experiences in the Aftermath of the Emergency Allotment Expiration.

The upcoming legislative package that was signed into law on July 4, 2025, makes significant cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the largest antihunger federal program. To better understand the implications of reducing federal support for SNAP, we draw on SNAP participants' experience with the termination of temporary policy measures during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, a period of disruption and uncertainty. Congress passed the First Coronavirus Response Act in March 2020, which provided emergency relief. This included the emergency allotments (EAs), a tempo

Determinants of intra-household food allocation between adults in South Asia - a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Nutrition interventions, often delivered at the household level, could increase their efficiency by channelling resources towards pregnant or lactating women, instead of leaving resources to be disproportionately allocated to traditionally favoured men. However, understanding of how to design targeted nutrition programs is limited by a lack of understanding of the factors affecting the intra-household allocation of food. METHODS: We systematically reviewed literature on the factors affecting the allocation of food to adults in South Asian households (in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bh

Optimizing mealtime care and outcomes for people with dementia and their caregivers: A systematic review and meta-analysis of intervention studies.

Interventions addressing modifiable personal and environmental factors are critical to optimize dementia mealtime care, caregiving, and outcomes. This review synthesized the characteristics and effects of non-pharmacological interventions on mealtime care and outcomes in people with dementia and their caregivers. Five databases were searched from January 2012 to October 2024. Eligible studies were accessed for study quality and graded for level of evidence. Meta-analyses were performed for studies within the same intervention type that tested the impact on same outcomes. 33 studies were identi

The mediating effect of food ınsecurity in the relationship between food ınflation and eating behaviors: a case of nursing students.

INRODUCTION: Nursing students may be particularly vulnerable to food insecurity because of their intensive academic and clinical demands. Although food insecurity has been studied among university and nursing students, limited research has examined the links between food-price pressures, socioeconomic factors, and nutritional behavior, particularly the statistical mediating role of food insecurity. This study examined these relationships among nursing students. METHODS: This cross-sectional correlational study included 250 undergraduate nursing students from the Department of Nursing at Kilis

Food Security and Diet Quality Improvements among At-Risk, Low-Income, Older Adults following a Free Meal Pilot Program.

Older adults are at a greater risk for food insecurity compared to the general population. This study aimed to describe changes in diet quality and food insecurity following a free meal program at low-income, older adult housing complexes. Study participants were recruited from two low-income older adult public housing complexes in Kentucky. Fifty participants were enrolled and received 1-4 free weekly meals across 3 months as part of the Meals on Wings pilot program. Surveys and a 24 h dietary recall were completed at baseline and 3 months. Participants were predominately female, 69 years of

The implementation of a school-based intervention to address food insecurity: a mixed-methods evaluation of the Helping Hands Ending Hunger program.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the implementation of a school-based intervention, Helping Hands Ending Hunger (HHEH), to distribute food, including fresh produce supplementation, to families. DESIGN: We conducted a convergent mixed-methods evaluation that collected data from family HHEH participants and key informants (KIs). At two points (Winter and Spring), family representatives responded to a brief survey of closed- and open-ended questions. KIs were school-based implementers who participated in semi-structured interviews. Data were analysed separately and then integrated. SETTING: United States

Position statement: the Society of Behavioral Medicine supports retaining funding for school meals to reduce hunger and food insecurity in American children.

Millions of children across the United States rely on school meals as a primary source of daily nutrition. Access to healthy meals improves diet quality, reduces hunger, and supports better attendance and academic performance. Recent federal actions, however, have threatened the reach and quality of these programs. Funding reductions have limited schools' ability to purchase fresh, locally sourced foods and have made universal free meals harder to provide. These changes disproportionately affect students from low-income and historically marginalized communities, increasing food insecurity, sti

Sexual orientation-based disparities in food security among adults in the United States: results from the 2003-2016 NHANES.

BACKGROUND: Access to sufficient, safe, culturally appropriate, and nutritious food is essential for maintaining both physical and mental health. Despite a growing body of evidence suggesting that sexual minority (SM) people experience significant disparities in socioeconomic and material resource security, there remains a paucity of empirical studies examining the prevalence of food insecurity among SM people relative to their heterosexual peers. OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of adult and household food insecurity across sexual orientation groups in the United States after adjustin

Associations of food insecurity with geriatric syndromes in the economically deprived community-dwelling Chinese older adults: the mediating role of malnutrition risk.

PURPOSE: Food insecurity is a vital social determinant of health. Among the economically deprived community-dwelling Chinese older adults, we examined the associations between levels of food insecurity and (1) various types and (2) the number of geriatric syndromes, and investigated the mediating role of malnutrition risk in these relationships. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted. 281 older adults aged ≥ 65 years with household income < 75% of the population median and participating in a food assistance program evaluation study in Hong Kong were included. Secondary data on food in…

Plant proteins for functional food gels: sources, extraction technologies, sustainable gelation approaches, and applications in food systems.

The global demand for sustainable, nutritious, and environmentally responsible food systems has accelerated the development of plant-based protein gels designed to replicate the sensory, nutritional, and functional characteristics of conventional animal-derived products. This transition is driven by increasing concerns regarding environmental impact, resource utilization, health, and ethical sustainability associated with animal protein production. While existing reviews primarily address isolated aspects of plant proteins or gelation mechanisms, this review provides an integrated and applicat

Homelessness and hunger.

We employ data from the National Survey of Homeless Assistance Providers and Clients to examine the character and correlates of hunger among homeless people. Our analysis, couched in an adaptation framework, finds more support for the differentiation hypothesis than for the leveling hypothesis: Complex patterns of food insecurity exist at the individual level, and they vary with the resources available (e.g., higher monthly income, regular shelter use) and obstacles faced (e.g., alcohol, drug, and physical and mental health problems). The chronically homeless, who suffer from multiple deficits

Comparing cognition, mealtime performance, and nutritional status in people with dementia with or without ideational apraxia.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the prevalence rate of ideational apraxia (IA) affecting self-feeding in people with dementia, confirm the stage of dementia at which IA most commonly occurs, and compare mealtime performance and nutritional status between people with dementia (PWD) with and without IA. METHOD: A cross-sectional design with between-subject comparison was used. Among the 395 potential participants recruited from dementia special care units at nine long-term care facilities in central and northern Taiwan, 98 met the operational definition of IA and were included in the PWD with IA group.
