Presentation of a general algorithm to include effect assessment on secondary poisoning in the derivation of environmental quality criteria. 2. Terrestrial food chains.

In a previous study a simple algorithm was presented for effect assessment on secondary poisoning of birds and mammals. This algorithm (MPC = NOECfish-eater/BCFfish) was drawn up by analyzing a two-step aquatic food chain (water-fish-bird/mammal). The algorithm was used to test whether quality criteria set for surface water, based on effect assessment for aquatic organisms, constitute a "safe" level for secondary poisoning. The present study analyzes whether this algorithm can equally well be used for effect assessment in a terrestrial food chain. The pathway soil-earthworm-bird/mammal was use

A Nutrient Ratio-Based, Web-Enabled Food Quality Score Is Associated With Weight and Blood Pressure Compared With Leading Nutrient Profiling Systems.

BACKGROUND: Rising prevalence of chronic cardiometabolic conditions may be partly driven by shifts in dietary patterns. Nutrient profiling systems (NPSs) aim to guide healthier food choices through labeling and consumer-facing technologies but vary in accessibility and how well they distinguish food healthfulness. OBJECTIVES: The primary objective was to compare a web-enabled, ratio-based NPS, Nutrient Consume Score (NCS), and its underlying nutrient ratios with 4 other leading NPSs, Nutri-Score, Health Star Rating, NOVA Classification, and Food Compass 2.0, by examining associations with obe

Advances in Sensing Techniques and Deep Learning for Food Quality Detection: Opportunities, Challenges, and Perspectives from Image Recognition to Multimodal Data Fusion.

Food quality and safety inspection increasingly requires advanced solutions because conventional methods are challenged by the complexity of modern food systems. Effective inspection must address product quality, authenticity, and safety, together with process-related risks arising during production, storage, transportation, and distribution. However, existing analytical approaches and deep learning studies often focus on individual food attributes or sensing modalities, providing limited guidance for selecting appropriate models and sensing strategies for specific inspection objectives. This

The Interplay Between Summer Meals, Food Insecurity, and Diet Quality Among Low-Income Children in Maryland, USA: A Multiphase Cross-Sectional Study.

Background: Food insecurity and poor diet quality disproportionately affect U.S. children from low-income households, with summer school closures exacerbating risks. Federally funded programs like the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) and SUN Bucks (Summer EBT) aim to address these challenges, yet evidence of their post-pandemic dietary impact remains limited. Objectives: This study examines the relationship between policy innovations, summer meal participation, food insecurity, and diet quality among children from low-income households in Prince George's County, Maryland. Methods: A cross-se

Microbiological quality assessment of fresh produce: Potential health risk to children and urgent need for improved food safety in school feeding schemes.

About 388 million school-going children worldwide benefit from school feeding schemes, which make use of fresh produce to prepare meals. Fresh produce including leafy greens and other vegetables were served at 37% and 31% of school feeding programs, respectively, in Africa. This study aimed at assessing the microbiological quality of fresh produce grown onsite or supplied to South African schools that are part of the national school feeding programs that benefit over 9 million school-going children. Coliforms, Escherichia coli, Enterobacteriaceae, and Staphylococcus aureus were enumerated from

Discharge of swine wastes risks water quality and food safety: Antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes from swine sources to the receiving environments.

Swine feedlots are widely considered as a potential hotspot for promoting the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment. ARGs could enter the environment via discharge of animal wastes, thus resulting in contamination of soil, water, and food. We investigated the dissemination and diversification of 22 ARGs conferring resistance to sulfonamides, tetracyclines, chloramphenicols, and macrolides as well as the occurrence of 18 corresponding antibiotics from three swine feedlots to the receiving water, soil environments and vegetables. Most ARGs and antibiotics survive

Food insecurity, mental health and quality of life among people living with HIV commencing antiretroviral treatment in Ethiopia: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Studies from high-income settings show that both food insecurity and common mental disorders (CMDs) are associated with lower quality of life among people living with HIV (PLHIV). However, there is limited research among PLHIV in sub-Saharan Africa. In this study we tested the hypothesis that food insecurity and CMDs would be associated with poorer quality of life of PLHIV in Ethiopia. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out with 348 PLHIV who were initiating antiretroviral therapy recruited from two primary care centers and a tertiary Hospital in southwest Ethiopia. Food

Assessing and optimizing the relationship between nutritional quality and environmental impacts of household food consumption: evidence from the longitudinal data in urban China.

BACKGROUND: Food consumption is a critical nexus that links human health with environmental sustainability. However, existing research rarely considers the relationship between nutritional upgrading of dietary shifts and their environmental impacts simultaneously, especially in urban areas with significant income disparities. Therefore, it is necessary to assess the relationships between the two in the context of income stratification and promote sustainable transformation of the food system through dietary adjustments. RESULTS: This study constructs an assessment indicator to quantify the re

Gentle Sterilization of Carrot-Based Purees by High-Pressure Thermal Sterilization and Ohmic Heating and Influence on Food Processing Contaminants and Quality Attributes.

Pressure-enhanced sterilization (PES) and ohmic heating (OH) are two emerging sterilization techniques, currently lacking implementation in the food industry. However, both technologies offer significant benefits in terms of spore inactivation using reduced thermal intensity in food products, as well as minimized effects on sensory and nutritional profiles. In this study, PES and OH were tested based on possible food safety process windows in comparison to thermal retorting, to optimize the food quality of carrot-based purees. The following parameters related to food quality were tested: textu
