Most children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy (HCP), one of the most prevalent subtypes of cerebral palsy, struggle with grasping and manipulating objects. This impairment may arise from a diminished capacity to properly direct forces created with the finger pad due to aberrant force application. Children with HCP were asked to create maximal force with the index finger pad in the palmar (normal) direction with both the paretic and non-paretic hands. The resulting forces and finger postures were then applied to a computational musculoskeletal model of the hand to estimate the corresponding musc

While previous studies have identified motor dysfunction in individuals with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), the experimental tasks investigated to date have remained relatively limited. This study compared multi-finger force production in individuals with MCI and healthy controls (HC), employing a task designed to comprehensively reflect the complexities of neural integrity. Participants were instructed to match a target force using the net force of five fingers with real-time visual feedback, while individual finger forces were also measured. The analyses were conducted at two levels: net f

Mouth specula with incisor bite plates shift the pressure from all teeth exclusively to the incisors in the opening phase which leads to increased forces on dental, osseous, and soft tissue structures of the horse's head. The potentially pathological character of these forces is described clinically by single reports of maxilla and mandible fractures occurring during the use of opened mouth specula. This study describes these forces on incisor teeth in horses during odontoplasty of cheek teeth under sedation. Measurements were documented using a modified "Günther" mouth speculum fitted with a

BACKGROUND: The carpal tunnel is a fibro-osseous structure containing the median nerve and flexor tendons. Its cross-sectional area has been shown to increase during compressive force application to the carpal bones in modeling and in vitro studies. The purpose of this study was to investigate the morphological and positional changes of the carpal arch and median nerve while in vivo compressive force was applied in the radioulnar direction across the wrist.
METHODS: Ultrasound images of the carpal tunnel and its contents were captured for 11 healthy, female volunteers at the distal tunnel lev

The thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) joint is highly susceptible to osteoarthritis (OA), often leading to weakness. As the most functionally important finger, it is vital to monitor thumb force, both the magnitude and location, to track disease progression and evaluate treatments and surgeries for CMC OA. However, current tools fail to measure isolated thumb force or capture varied thumb postures. This work developed a device that measured thumb force independently of the other fingers in 24 thumb postures in participants without CMC OA, and participants with CMC OA before, 3-months, and 6-months a

PURPOSE: Varus-valgus deformities in children and adolescents are often corrected by temporary hemi-epiphysiodesis, in which the physis is bridged by an implant to inhibit growth. With standard implant solutions, the acting forces cannot be regulated, rendering the correction difficult to control. Furthermore, the implant load steadily increases with ongoing growth potentially leading to implant-related failures. A novel implant concept was developed applying a controlled constant force to the physis, which carries the potential to avoid these complications. The study aim was to proof the conc

TASK FORCE STATEMENT: In 2007, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons formed a task force to conduct an assessment regarding the safety and efficacy of autologous fat grafting, specifically to the breast, and to make recommendations for future research. The task force formulated specific issues regarding fat grafting and then compiled them to focus on five broad-based questions: 1. What are the current and potential applications of fat grafting (specifically breast indications, and if data are available, other cosmetic and reconstructive applications)? 2. What risks and complications are ass

We investigated the enhancement of the perceived force strength in force feedback devices by combining the pulling illusion with kinesthetic illusions. The pulling illusion (i.e., a sensation of being pulled or pushed) is induced by asymmetric vibrations applied to the fingertips, enabling the implementation of small, lightweight, and ungrounded force feedback devices. However, the perceived force intensity is limited. We focused on the kinesthetic illusion, a phenomenon in which the movement of a limb in the direction of muscle extension is illusively perceived by presenting vibrations to ten

BACKGROUND: The retina, a light-sensitive neural tissue critical for vision, exists in a dynamic mechanical environment where it is continuously exposed to mechanical forces. These forces, including traction forces, intraocular pressure-related stress, and hemodynamic forces, are closely linked to the progression of retinal diseases. A comprehensive understanding of retinal mechanosensation and mechanotransduction is essential for understanding the pathological mechanisms under aberrant mechanical conditions.

The objective of this study was to examine the contribution of lower motor neuron (LMN) and upper motor neuron (UMN) dysfunction to weakness and impaired motor control in 27 patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Isometric strength was measured by dorsiflexor maximum voluntary contraction force (MVC). LMN function was measured by tetanic force, twitch force, and the amplitude of the compound muscle action potential. UMN function was measured by the speed of rapid foot taps, the maximum rate of rise of voluntary force, and the central activation ratio [CAR = MVC/(MVC + superimposed

Skeletal muscle fatigue occurs, in part, from the accumulation of hydrogen (H+) and phosphate (Pi); however, the molecular basis through which these ions inhibit function is not fully understood. Therefore, we examined the effects of these metabolites on myosin-actin cross-bridge kinetics and mechanical properties in skeletal muscle fibers from older (65-75 yr) adults. Slow-contracting myosin heavy chain (MHC) I and fast-contracting MHC IIA fibers were examined under control (5 mM Pi, pH 7.0) and fatigue (30 mM Pi, pH 6.2) conditions at maximal calcium-activation [5 mM adenosine triphosphate (

The purpose of orthodontic treatment is to move teeth as efficiently as possible with least damage to teeth and their supporting tissues. Root resorption may occur as an unwanted side effect and may in some instances jeopardize an otherwise successful treatment. The general aim of this series of clinical investigations was to study the association between applied force, achieved tooth movement and related root resorptions. In 144 adolescents, the maxillary first or second premolar was buccally moved with a fixed orthodontic appliance. The variables studied were duration, magnitude and type of

Magnets have been used in dentistry for many years. They can be made to push or pull teeth. The force they deliver can be directed, and they can exert their force through mucosa and bone, as well as within the mouth. In orthodontics they are used for intrusion of teeth, tooth movement along archwires, expansion, retention, in functional appliances, and in the treatment of impacted teeth. New 'high energy' magnets are capable of producing very high forces relative to their size. Although magnets are potentially very useful there are a number of problems that severely affect their performance; t

Most bilateral actions in daily life are asymmetric: one limb sustains a steady postural load while the other performs a continuously adjusted force task. Whether the influence of such a sustained contraction on the contralateral limb is a fixed property of bilateral coordination or a strategy that higher centres rescale with task demand is unknown. In this exploratory study, we examined motor unit recruitment and common neural drive in the biceps brachii during asymmetric bilateral versus unilateral isometric force tracking, tested whether the interlimb effect depends on force level and rate

OBJECTIVE: Endotracheal tubes (ETTs) are commonly associated with laryngeal injury that may be short lasting and temporary or more severe and life altering. Injury is believed to result from forces that these ETTs exert on the larynx. Here we quantify the forces of ETTs of various sizes on the laryngotracheal complex to gain a more quantitative understanding of these potential damaging forces. Here we also perform preclinical testing of a novel support device to offload these forces.
METHODS: Endotracheal intubation was performed on a fresh human cadaver using various ETT sizes. A strain-sens

The purposes of this study were to determine the contributions of each shoulder muscle to glenohumeral joint force during abduction and flexion in both the anatomical and post-operative shoulder and to identify factors that may contribute to the incidence of glenoid component loosening/failure and joint instability in the shoulder after reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA). Eight cadaveric upper extremities were mounted onto a testing apparatus. Muscle lines of action were measured, and muscle forces and muscle contributions to glenohumeral joint forces were determined during abduction and flex

OBJECTIVE: Conventional catheter manipulation in the arch and supra-aortic trunks carries a risk of cerebral embolization. This study proposes a platform for detailed quantitative analysis of contact forces (CF) exerted on the vasculature, in order to investigate the potential advantages of robotic navigation.
METHODS: An anthropomorphic phantom representing a type I bovine arch was mounted and coupled onto a force/torque sensor. Three-axis force readings provided an average root-mean-square modulus, indicating the total forces exerted on the phantom. Each of the left subclavian, left common

The role of Na+ in glutamate transport was studied in Escherichia coli B, strain 29-78, which possesses a very high activity of glutamate transport (L. Frank and I. Hopkins, J. Bacteriol., 1969). Energy-depleted cells were exposed to radioactive glutamate in the presence of a sodium gradient, a membrane potential, or both. One hundred- to 200-fold accumulation of the amino acid was attained in the presence of both electrical and chemical driving forces for the sodium ion. Somewhat lower accumulation values were obtained when either chemical or electrical driving forces were applied separately.

In 1979, a young associate professor at Harvard Business School published his first article for HBR, "How Competitive Forces Shape Strategy." In the years that followed, Michael Porter's explication of the five forces that determine the long-run profitability of any industry has shaped a generation of academic research and business practice. In this article, Porter undertakes a thorough reaffirmation and extension of his classic work of strategy formulation, which includes substantial new sections showing how to put the five forces analysis into practice. The five forces govern the profit stru
