Unusual lymphadenopathy diagnosed by endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration.

Oxidized cellulose, used as hemostatic in thoracic surgery, may cause in some cases foreign body reactions, and simulate other diseases. We report the case of a 39-year-old man operated on a middle lobe lobectomy for atypical carcinoid. The follow up chest-CT showed enlarged mediastinal lymph nodes, so endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration was performed suspecting recurrence of the tumor. The cytology results showed amorphous fragments such as foreign body reaction secondary to Pahacel®, used as hemostatic during the surgery. A few days later, the patient was re-oper

Foreign body granuloma: a diagnosis not to forget.

Penetrating wounds of the foot are not uncommon. Many are caused by thorns or by fragments of wood that are retained in the foot, creating a foreign-body granuloma. The differential diagnosis for bony reaction to an unrecognised organic foreign body includes osteoid osteoma, chronic and acute osteomyelitis, tuberculosis granuloma, bone cyst, aneurysmal bone cyst, cortical fibrous defect, and neoplasm. We report the case of a boy suffering from a thorn inducing a lytic lesion of the fifth metatarsal that demonstrates the diagnosis difficulties of foreign body granuloma.

[Rhinoplasty with late-onset side effect to silicone implant].

This is a case report of a 75-year-old woman who simultaneously developed a firm tumour on the dorsum and apex of the nose. Swap for culture was negative. Punch biopsy from the dorsum and apex showed inflammation, but no foreign body reaction or malignancy. Four months after onset of the tumour, the patient developed an inflammatory reaction with pus formation and subsequent extrusion of a piece of silicone from the apex. She revealed that she 43 years prior to this incident had a rhinoplasty with a silicone implant performed. This illustrates a potential side effect to silicone implant with v

Sacrococcygeal foreign body progressing with pilonidal sinus clinical picture: report of a case.

BACKGROUND: Pilonidal sinus is a benign anorectal disease that is frequently seen in the sacrococcygeal area when a foreign body reaction develops after the invasion of hair follicles. OBJECTIVES: Trauma in this region and clinical abscesses that recur after trauma due to foreign bodies are not frequently observed. CASE REPORT: This study presents the case of a patient with chronic leakage who had a history of three surgical procedures due to recurrent pilonidal abscesses and the presence of a foreign body in the sacrococcygeal area. CONCLUSION: The presence of a foreign body in cases progr

Actinic granuloma of the conjunctiva.

The key histologic feature of pingueculas is the presence of actinic elastosis of the conjunctival connective-tissue fibers. We describe a patient who had a pinguecula that, on pathologic examination, exhibited a prominent foreign-body giant-cell reaction in association with the elastotic fibers. The term actinic granuloma has been coined recently to designate a similar reaction in sun-damaged skin. Because the nature of the inflammatory reaction may be misinterpreted on pathologic examination as indicating the presence of microorganisms or a foreign body, both the clinician and the pathologis

A graphite foreign body granuloma that caused palatal perforation. Case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: We present an unusual case of a graphite foreign body granuloma causing palatal perforation. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 62-year-old female presented with a macule on the hard palate clinically consistent with a blue nevus. On biopsy a black nodular mass was excised, establishing oroantral communication that was verified by a computed tomography scan. A diagnosis of malignant melanoma was strongly suspected, but microscopic examination showed a graphite foreign body granuloma. It was suggested that the graphite was implanted in a thin area of the palatal bone causing perforation. CONCLUS

Cyanoacrylate glue embolisation for varicose veins - A novel complication.

BACKGROUND: Non-thermal non-tumescent methods for varicose vein treatment have rapidly gained popularity in recent years due to clinical efficacy comparable to other endovenous methods, but with a superior safety and tolerability profile. Cyanoacrylate is an adhesive that rapidly polymerises during endovenous treatment to cause rapid occlusion of veins and initiate vein fibrosis. METHOD: Cyanoacrylate glue treatment is known to cause complications such as phlebitis, cellulitis and deep vein thrombosis in rare instances. We present the first reported case of cyanoacrylate extravasation with ch

Comparison of histological and three-dimensional characteristics of porous titanium granules and deproteinized bovine particulate grafts used for sinus floor augmentation in humans: a pilot study.

PURPOSE: Slow-resorbing deproteinized bovine bone grafts have presented high success rates when used for sinus augmentation. However, histologic evaluation shows that this material is eventually excreted as a result of a foreign body reaction. The purpose of this study was to compare and to evaluate the performance of a recently introduced particulate porous graft material, consisting of pure titanium granule (PTG) to the deproteinized bovine bone grafts, when used as a sinus augmentation material. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To understand the histological aspects of PTG, deproteinized bovine part

Rejection of Permacol mesh used in abdominal wall repair: a case report.

Permacol mesh has shown promise when used in abdominal wall repair, especially in the presence of a contaminated surgical field. This biomaterial, derived from porcine dermis collagen, has proposed advantages over synthetic materials due to increased biocompatibility and reduced foreign body reaction within human tissues. However, we present a case report describing a patient who displayed rejection to a Permacol mesh when used in the repair of abdominal wound dehiscence following an emergency laparotomy. Review of the English language literature using PubMed and Medline, showed only two previ

Biopolymer sarcoid-like foreign-body granulomas: Case report and literature review.

Iatrogenic allogenosis is a disease caused by the injection of biopolymers with esthetic purposes. Clinical manifestations can occur between six hours and 30 years after the procedure with local and/or systemic symptoms. The pathological findings are characterized by the presence of foreign body granulomas with a sarcoid-like reaction. Its interpretation is difficult given its association with sarcoidosis. We report the clinical case of a female patient with granulomatous lesions in reaction to a foreign body secondary to the multiple application of unknown substances on the face and buttocks.

An in vitro model that mimics the foreign body response in the peritoneum: Study of the bioadhesive properties of HA-based materials.

A cascade of reactions known as the foreign body response (FBR) follows the implantation of biomaterials leading to the formation of a fibrotic capsule around the implant and subsequent health complications. The severity of the FBR is driven mostly by the physicochemical characteristics of implanted material, the method and place of implantation, and the degree of immune system activation. Here we present an in vitro model for assessing new materials with respect to their potential to induce a FBR in the peritoneum. The model is based on evaluating protein sorption and cell adhesion on the imp

The foreign body response: emerging cell types and considerations for targeted therapeutics.

The foreign body response (FBR) remains a clinical challenge in the field of biomaterials due to its ability to elicit a chronic and sustained immune response. Modulating the immune response to materials is a modern paradigm in tissue engineering to enhance repair while limiting fibrous encapsulation and implant isolation. Though the classical mediators of the FBR are well-characterized, recent studies highlight that our understanding of the cell types that shape the FBR may be incomplete. In this review, we discuss the emerging role of T cells, stromal-immune cell interactions, and senescent

Quantitative Proteomic Characterization of Foreign Body Response towards Silicone Breast Implants Identifies Chronological Disease-Relevant Biomarker Dynamics.

The etiology of exaggerated fibrous capsule formation around silicone mammary implants (SMI) is multifactorial but primarily induced by immune mechanisms towards the foreign material silicone. The aim of this work was to understand the disease progression from implant insertion and immediate tissue damage response reflected in (a) the acute wound proteome and (b) the adsorption of chronic inflammatory wound proteins at implant surfaces. An intraindividual relative quantitation TMT-liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry approach was applied to the profile wound proteome formed around SM

[Halitosis in two children caused by a foreign body in the nose].

In two boys aged 4.5 and 1.5 years with halitosis a nasal foreign body was found. After removal the foetor disappeared. Little is known about the epidemiology of halitosis in children. Apart from specific odours with certain systemic disorders, local pathology such as chronic sinusitis, upper and lower respiratory tract infections and to a lesser degree gastrointestinal disorders may be the cause of the offensive smell. As in adults, bad breath in children is usually related to poor oral hygiene or disease of the oral cavity. The first-line treatment is proper oral hygiene and if necessary den

Impacted foreign body in the sigmoid colon presenting as recurrent diverticulitis.

We report on a patient with left-sided abdominal pain thought to be caused by recurring diverticulitis. Computed tomography of the sigmoid colon revealed diverticulosis without the presence of a foreign body. During colonoscopy, a phytobezoar in the form of a vegetable stem was discovered transversely impacted within two diverticular openings in the lumen of the sigmoid colon. A localized inflammatory reaction was present without obstruction or perforation. After endoscopic removal of the phytobezoar, the abdominal pain resolved. The patient's presumed diverticulitis was an inflammatory reacti

Human Histology and Persistence of Various Injectable Filler Substances for Soft Tissue Augmentation.

An increasing number of soft tissue filler substances have been introduced to the beauty market outside the U.S. which lackexperimental and clinical data in support of their claim. Ten commercially available filler substances were examined for biocompatibility and durability: 0.1 cc of each substance was injected deep intradermally into the volar forearm of one of the authors and observed for clinical reaction and permanence. At 1, 3, 6, and 9 months the test sites were excised, histologically examined, and graded according to foreign body reactions classification. Collagen (Zyplast) was phago
