INTRODUCTION: The Galeazzi fracture-dislocation was originally described by Sir Astley Cooper in 1822 but was named after Italian surgeon Ricardo Galeazzi in 1934. It is an injury classified as a radial shaft fracture with associated dislocation of the distal radioulnar joint and disruption of the forearm axis joint. The associated distal radioulnar joint injury may be purely ligamentous in nature, tearing the triangular fibrocartilaginous complex, or involve bony tissue (that is, ulnar styloid avulsions) or both. We report this case because of the rare association of posterior dislocation of

BACKGROUND: Traumatic facet dislocations and facet-fracture dislocations in the lower cervical spine (C2/C3 to C7/T1) are frequently associated with devastating neurological symptoms. A good outcome can only be achieved if the operator has wide and sound knowledge of reduction techniques and the best possible strategy is devised for the subsequent treatment of these severe lesions.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between 1973 and 1997 a total of 117 of our patients met at least one of the following inclusion criteria: unilateral locked facet dislocation (48%), bilateral locked facet dislocations (23%),…

BACKGROUND: Chronic knee fracture-dislocation is an exceptionally rare and disabling condition, most often resulting from neglected trauma. In elderly patients with degenerative changes and extensive ligamentous insufficiency, total knee arthroplasty (TKA) may represent a reliable salvage procedure to restore alignment, stability, and function.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 76-year-old woman with hypertension and type 2 diabetes presented four months after a fall with a chronic posterolateral dislocation of the left knee. Clinical examination revealed a fixed varus deformity and posterior tibial trans

BACKGROUND: Bilateral trans-scaphoid perilunate fracture dislocation is an infrequent injury that usually occurs following either high-energy trauma or a fall on an outstretched hand. It can be easily overlooked in patients with polytrauma and may lead to an unfavorable prognosis with pain and arthritis.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 26-year-old man with a history of a fall from a two-story building, diagnosed with bilateral trans-scaphoid perilunate fracture-dislocation, bilateral calcaneal fractures, and a burst fracture of the third lumbar vertebra (L3). In the emergency depa…

INTRODUCTION: Ankle fractures represent a significant portion of orthopedic injuries, with fracture dislocations tending to have worse outcomes. Logsplitter fractures represent a subset of fracture dislocations in which the talus is axially wedged in the tibiofibular joint. We aim to comprehensively investigate and report on the complications and functional outcomes associated with ankle fracture-dislocations.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, a medical librarian conducted a literature search in Embase, Ovid Medline, Scopus, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, an…

BACKGROUND: Traumatic bilateral lumbosacral facet dislocations without fractures are extremely rare. Only 7 cases have been documented since the first description by Watson-Jones in 1974. Although various treatment strategies have been reported, no consensus has been reached regarding the best surgical approach.
OBSERVATIONS: A 35-year-old female presented for medical attention following a high-speed motor vehicle collision. She sustained multiple injuries, including an abdominal aortic injury requiring emergent thoracic endovascular aortic repair. She was found to have bilateral lumbosacral

OBJECTIVES: Trans-olecranon fracture-dislocations are rare in children. To our knowledge, only 12 cases have been described in children till now and the treatment strategy for this injury in children remains unclear. To provide a clear clinical description and more accurate treatment options, we retrospectively reviewed cases with this kind of injury in our institution.
METHODS: From 2002 to 2019, eleven cases diagnosed with trans-olecranon fracture-dislocation of the elbow were identified, and their medical charts and radiographs were obtained. All patients underwent open reduction and inter

Elbow fracture-dislocation is a complex injury which can lead to significant bony and soft tissue damage. Surgical intervention is guided towards restoring joint stability, allowing early mobilization and preventing long-term joint stiffness. The most common types are posterolateral, posteromedial, Monteggia type (and variants), and anterior trans-olecranon fracture-dislocations. Posterolateral fracture-dislocation is characterized by a radial head fracture (± anterolateral coronoid fracture) and typically capsuloligamentous disruption (lateral collateral ligaments injury is the most common).

Proximal interphalangeal (PIP) fracture-dislocation is a relatively common injury that results from "jamming" a finger. Treatment hinges on the degree of articular surface involvement, which determines stability of the joint. For unstable injuries, a variety of surgical interventions have been described including extension block pinning, open reduction internal fixation, volar plate arthroplasty, static or dynamic external fixation, and hemi-hamate reconstruction. We present the case of an unstable, subacute ring finger PIP dorsal fracture dislocation for which the above options were not possi…

BACKGROUND: Vertebral artery injury is known to potentially occur in conjunction with blunt cervical spine trauma. Rarely, these injuries present bilaterally as complete occlusions. Twelve cases of bilateral vertebral artery occlusions after closed cervical spine trauma have been described in the reported data, nearly all of which demonstrated signs and symptoms of vertebrobasilar insufficiency and ischemia.
CASE DESCRIPTION: Our patient presented after a traumatic C5-C6 flexion-distraction injury that had resulted in bilateral locked facets and spinal cord injury and bilateral vertebral arte

BACKGROUND: About 4% of glenohumeral dislocations are posterior and only 1% is associated with fracture of the humeral head. Most frequent causes are high energy traumas, seizures and electrocution. The fracture and the posterior dislocation, associated with the trauma and capsular lesion can cause an important vascular damage of the humeral head.
METHODS: We describe 5 cases of posterior fracture-dislocation of the shoulder that required open reduction and internal fixation treated using double approach: posterior approach for reduction humeral head and eventually bone and capsular posterior

BACKGROUND: Carpometacarpal joint fracture dislocation of the second to fifth finger is a rare hand injury associated with high energy trauma. Due to severe swelling and overlapping of bones on the radiograph of wrist-hand, dislocations are missed. We reported a series of six patients with rare carpometacarpal joint fracture dislocation treated with open reduction.
METHODS: We retrospectively studied six cases of carpometacarpal joint fracture dislocation. All patients were treated with open reduction and internal fixation with Kirschner wire. Functional assessment was done with Quick Disabil…

Bosworth fracture-dislocation of the ankle is a rare injury in which the proximal fibular fragment is entrapped behind the tibia. Closed reduction is extremely difficult to achieve. Early open reduction and internal fixation enables a better outcome by minimising soft-tissue damage. We report on a 36-year-old man who underwent open reduction and internal fixation for a Bosworth fracture-dislocation of the ankle complicated by severe soft-tissue swelling and an impending risk of skin necrosis after failed closed reduction.

Posterior dislocation of the shoulder may be missed or neglected at initial presentation especially in developing countries. We present a case of 40-year-old Indian man who had 3-month missed posterior dislocation of the right shoulder along with malunited fracture of the anatomical neck of the humerus. Open reduction and stabilization with modified McLaughlin procedure was performed. Rotational osteotomy of proximal humerus had to be performed as supplementary procedure to keep the humeral head stable in glenoid cavity during functional range of movements. The patient had excellent result of

Both-bone forearm fractures, also known as concomitant diaphyseal radius and ulna fractures, and distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) dislocations are each uncommon injuries in adult upper extremity trauma. DRUJ dislocations are more often associated with radial shaft (Galeazzi) fractures. In this article, we report the case of a patient who sustained a both-bone forearm fracture and DRUJ dislocation, and we review the literature on this unique injury pattern.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the treatment method and effectiveness of fresh closed fracture-dislocation of the midtarsal joint.
METHODS: Between April 2004 and April 2011, 73 patients (75 feet) with fresh closed fracture-dislocation of the midtarsal joint were treated with closed reduction combined with open reduction and internal fixation. There were 56 males (58 feet) and 17 females (17 feet), aged from 19 to 62 years (mean, 35.8 years). Injuries were caused by falling from height in 35 cases, by sprain in 4 cases, by machine twist in 5 cases, by heavy pound in 9 cases, and by traffic acciden

Chondral fractures of the patella are associated with acute dislocation of the patella. Osteochondral fracture in patellar dislocation is located in the medial facet of the patella. This article presents a case of a 15-year-old female ballerina with isolated displaced osteochondral fracture of the patella without patellar dislocation. She had no history of trauma. A Merchant's view of both knees showed mild subluxation of the patella, a small fragment on the lateral aspect of the knee, and a small defect of the centromedial patella. Axial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed an osteochond
