PURPOSE: The Nuss procedure is one of the most popular surgeries for correcting pectus excavatum. However, little is known regarding stress and strain on the deformed ribs after inserting the pectus bar. We used ultrasonography to investigate costochondral changes before and after the Nuss procedure.

Treatment of a large articular cartilage defect in the distal radius poses a significant challenge to hand surgeons. To reduce the development of secondary degenerative arthritis, restoration of the articular surface is preferable. Pedicle pisiform transfer has been reported as a useful treatment option for Kienböck's disease. We describe a surgical technique involving vascularized pisiform transfer for large cartilage defects after intra-articular distal radius fractures and highlight the vascular supply of the pisiform.

Five patients with fractures of the lateral tibial condyle were treated operatively by resurfacing of the lateral tibial plateau by means of a Marmor polyethylene tibial prosthesis. The indications were persistent pain and valgus deformity. In four patients, in whom the cartilage of the lateral femoral condyle was normal at the time of operation, the results were excellent. One patient with osteoarthritic cartilage degeneration of the femoral condyle was not improved by the operation.

A 16-year-old girl sustained a transscaphoid, translunate, transtriquetrum volarly displaced fracture due to shear stress in the coronal plane. Treatment involved open reduction and internal fixation of the fractures followed by immobilization. At 15 months' follow-up, grip strength and motion were diminished compared with the uninjured wrist. Radiographs demonstrated fully healed fractures with narrowing of the cartilage space between the capitate and the lunate.

Ninety six distal tibial epiphyseal fractures were identified and treated in our institution from 1976 to 1988. The average age was twelve years and eight months (range two to seventeen years), but seventy-one were between eleven and fourteen years old.
