Ankle arthroscopy-assisted closed reduction in Bosworth fracture dislocation.

The Bosworth fracture dislocation is a rare type of ankle fracture and is usually unrecognized on initial radiographs, therefore early open reduction is recommended. This study reports a 51-year-old female with uncommon imaging and clinical features. Preoperative X-ray, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging of the ankle showed posterior detached dislocation of the intact distal fibula, the loose osteochondral fragments located in the tibiotalar joint, and the rupture of the deltoid ligament. Due to the initial infected wound on the severely swollen ankle, delayed arthroscopy-assi

Missed ulnar nerve injury and closed forearm fracture in a child.

Ulnar nerve injury in closed fracture of forearm in children is uncommon.Commonly, neurapraxia is the reason for this palsy but other severe injuries or nerve entrapment has been reported in some cases. The importance of diagnosis concerning the types of the nerve injury lies in the fact that they have totally different management. We present a case of ulnar nerve deficit in a child following a closed fracture of the forearm bones. It is imperative to diagnose exact cause of palsy as it forms the basis for treatment. MRI scan can help diagnosis and accordingly guide the management. Simple nerve

Iatrogenic radial neck fracture on closed reduction of elbow dislocation.

Traumatic dislocation of the elbow is rare in children and can most often be managed in the emergency department using procedural sedation and closed reduction with good functional outcome. Radiographs must be evaluated for associated avulsions and fractures around the elbow. We present the case of a 14-year-old girl who sustained a fracture of the radial neck subsequent to repeated attempts at closed reduction of a pure posterior elbow dislocation that was missed on postreduction radiographs. Careful use of reduction techniques and avoidance of repeated forceful manipulations is emphasized.

Delayed Frey syndrome after closed treatment of condylar fracture.

Frey syndrome is also known as auriculotemporal syndrome and gustatory sweating. It is characterized by the occurrence of hyperesthesia, flushing, and warmth or sweating over the distribution of the auriculotemporal nerve and/or greater auricular nerve while eating foods that produce a strong salivary stimulus. It is commonly seen as a complication of parotidectomy and open surgery of temporomandibular joint. It can also be caused by other forms of trauma, including blunt trauma, but rarely does it occur without trauma. The relation between fracture displacement of the condyle and Frey syndrom

Early reexploration after closed reduction of nasal bone fracture.

The aim of this study was to analyze the cases that were reexplored shortly after closed reduction of the nasal bone fracture. From 1996 to 2009, 955 patients (757 males and 198 females) were operated on for the nasal bone fractures. The nasal splints were applied and removed 1 week postoperatively, and the results of nasal reduction were reviewed. Indications for reexploration were undercorrection or deviation of the reduced nasal bone.Of the 955 patients, 13 (11 males and 2 females; 1.36%) were reexplored. The recorrection was done 7.78 +/- 4.77 days after the initial surgery. Mostly local a

Closed tibial fracture associated with laceration of tibialis anterior tendon.

Traumatic laceration of the tibialis anterior tendon is a rare finding. To the best of our knowledge, 4 such cases have been reported in the surgical literature, and 3 of these were missed upon initial clinical examination. We present the case of a 26-year-old male motorcyclist who sustained an acute laceration of the tibialis anterior tendon in association with closed fractures of the tibia and fibula. The laceration was initially not included in the diagnosis, because weak ankle dorsiflexion was attributed to antalgic guarding. The primary aim of this report is to emphasize the possibility o

Closed posteromedial dislocation of the ankle without fracture: a case report.

Ankle dislocation without fracture is an extremely rare injury. Open dislocations were more common in the previous reports. The authors report a case of closed posteromedial dislocation of the ankle in a 24-year-old basketball player. Closed reduction was performed. The ankle was initially immobilized with the short leg cast before using the functional brace. Details of the rehabilitation program were described. Follow up examination at one-year demonstrated good clinical and functional results confirmed with the inversion stress radiographs. The patient can participate in sports activities at

[Fractures close to the epiphysis in children. Part I: upper extremities].

Fractures in children require special knowledge and skills due to the differences in biological and biomechanical properties of growing skeletons. Children suffer from fractures of the upper extremities much more than fractures of the lower extremities. While fractures of the diaphysis have a high regenerative and proliferation potential, impairment of the growth plate with consecutive disturbance of growth can be found more often in fractures close to the epiphysis. Most epiphysis fractures in children can be identified by a set of 2-plane X-ray images but precise knowledge about the skeletal

Closed treatment of frontal sinus fracture with percutaneous screw reduction.

Fractures of the frontal sinus are a relatively common injury presenting to trauma units that deal with craniofacial injuries. Approximately one third of frontal sinus fractures affect the anterior wall alone, with two thirds involving the anterior wall, posterior wall, or frontonasal duct. Isolated posterior wall defects are exceedingly rare. Frontal sinus fracture management is still controversial and involves preserving function when feasible or obliterating the sinus and duct, depending on the fracture pattern. In the standard treatment modality of frontal sinus fractures, repair is best p

Open vs closed approach to the nasal pyramid for fracture reduction.

OBJECTIVE: To compare an open vs a closed approach to the nasal pyramid for the initial repair of nasal fractures. METHODS: Retrospective medical record review of 49 patients with acute nasal fractures treated by a single surgeon during a 5-year period. Patients underwent a closed approach to the nasal pyramid (Boise elevator only) or an open approach using rhinoplasty techniques, including rasping, osteotomies, and cartilaginous resection or augmentation. Patients were further categorized based on whether septoplasty was performed. The primary outcome measure was the revision rate (RR). RES

Acute subclavian artery pseudoaneurysm after closed fracture of the clavicle.

A sixty-year-old woman was admitted with an acute subclavian artery pseudoaneurysm after a closed fracture of the middle third of the right clavicle. This manifested itself a few days after the injury as a slowly growing, pulsatile and purple tumour-like mass in the right supraclavicular fossa. The distal pulses were normal, but this observation does not exclude a vascular trauma. This is an uncommon but potentially dangerous complication as it jeopardizes both the extremity and the life of the patient.

Closed talar body fracture with talonavicular dislocation; a case report.

Closed fracture dislocation of the body of the talus is rare. The dislocation of the subtalar and ankle joints (associated with fracture body) has been reported and already described in the current classifications. We report a case of closed fracture of the body of the talus associated with talonavicular dislocation. Open reduction and internal fixation was performed after failed attempt of closed reduction. The fracture has healed and there is no evidence of avascular necrosis after 2 years follow up. We recommend early evaluation of this injury by CT scan or by proper radiographic views unde

Symptomatic lacrimal duct diverticulum associated with closed nasal fracture.

Diverticula of the nasolacrimal collecting system are rare. Their cause may be congenital, inflammatory, or traumatic. A diverticulum of the nasolacrimal duct that presented 26 years after nasal trauma is described. The location of this diverticulum is extremely uncommon, and a case occurring after closed nasal trauma has not yet been presented. Evaluative studies and pertinent anatomy are reviewed. In any patient with recurrent dacryocystitis after nasal fracture, the diagnosis of a lacrimal system diverticulum should be considered. A detailed history and physical examination combined with da

Rupture of the posterior tibial tendon associated with closed ankle fracture.

Rupture of the posterior tibial tendon has rarely been associated with closed ankle fractures. All previous cases have been in association with pronation-external rotation type fractures in which the medial malleolus has been fractured. This case represents the first such report of a severed posterior tibial tendon in the absence of a medial malleolar fracture and reemphasizes the importance of critically evaluating intraoperative radiographs following the open reduction and internal fixation of closed ankle fractures to assess the possibility of soft tissue interposition. In the event of an a

Serotonergic antidepressant use as a risk factor for nonunion after closed long bone fractures.

PURPOSE: To evaluate whether preoperative use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) is associated with increased risk of reoperation, nonunion, infection, hospital readmission, or emergency department (ED) visits following operative fixation of isolated long bone fractures. METHODS: This retrospective, multicenter cohort study was conducted using the TriNetX Research Network. Adults (≥18 years) who underwent operative fixation of isolated tibial, femoral, or humeral shaft fractures between 2012 and 2024 were included. Patien

Outcome of Radial Nerve Palsy in Closed Humeral Shaft Fractures Treated Operatively and Expectantly.

PURPOSE: Recent trends favor earlier surgical intervention for humeral shaft fractures, based on the idea that operatively treated humerus fractures with associated radial nerve palsy may result in an earlier return of nerve function. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate whether the timing of radial nerve recovery differs between patients managed expectantly and operatively. METHODS: A retrospective review of closed humeral shaft fractures over a 12-year period was conducted. Patients with an associated radial nerve palsy were identified. Analysis focused on the time to onset of radi
