Effects of frontal lobe damage on interference effects in working memory.

Working memory is hypothesized to comprise a collection of distinct components or processes, each of which may have a unique neural substrate. Recent neuroimaging studies have isolated a region of the left inferior frontal gyrus that appears to be related specifically to one such component: resolving interference from previous items in working memory. In the present study, we examined working memory in patients with unilateral frontal lobe lesions by using a modified version of an item recognition task in which interference from previous trials was manipulated. In particular, we focused on pat…

Integration of diverse information in working memory within the frontal lobe.

Ability to integrate diverse forms of information in current thought, or working memory, is essential for human reasoning and problem solving. We used functional imaging to identify brain regions preferentially involved in maintaining integrated versus unintegrated information in working memory. For equal amounts of verbal and spatial information, activation of prefrontal cortex was greater for maintaining integrated rather than unintegrated representations. Posterior brain regions showed the opposite pattern. These results demonstrate frontal-lobe specialization in maintaining working-memory

Pyramidal cells of the frontal lobe: all the more spinous to think with.

The basal dendritic arbors of pyramidal cells in prefrontal areas 10, 11, and 12 of the macaque monkey were revealed by intracellular injection in fixed, flat-mounted, cortical slices. The size, number of branches, and spine density of the basal dendrites were quantified and compared with those of pyramidal cells in the occipital, parietal, and temporal lobes. These analyses revealed that cells in the frontal lobe were significantly more spinous than those in the other lobes, having as many as 16 times more spines than cells in the primary visual area (V1), four times more those in area 7a, an…

Frontal lobes pathology and dementia. An appraisal of the contribution of Leonardo Bianchi.

This paper which was inspired by Leonardo Bianchi's work, published in English a hundred years ago, summarizes the main features of frontal dementias, with particular emphasis on Pick's Disease (PiD) and on Frontal Lobe Dementia (FLD). We intend to examine on one hand whether these behavioral changes follow pathology strictly limited to the frontal lobes and on the other hand whether these changes truly constitute a dementia. Currently available data suggest the following conclusions: 1) Lesions to the frontal lobes produce a dementia which is clearly different from the typical picture of Alzh…

[Intraparenchymal epidermoid cyst of the right frontal lobe: a case report].

Epidermoid cysts are most likely to occur at the cerebellopontine angle or in the suprasellar region. Intracerebral epidermoid cysts are rare and only 18 cases have been reported in the literature. This report presents a case of epidermoid cyst which developed in the right frontal lobe. A 24-year-old woman was admitted to our clinic on April 24, 1983 because of generalized convulsions. On admission no neurological abnormalities were found except for absence of the venous pulsation in an ophthalmoscopic study. A plain roentgenogram revealed a crescent shaped calcification in the right frontal l…

The Connections of the Short Arcuate Fibers of the Frontal Lobe: An Anatomical Study.

BACKGROUND: We present the anatomy of the short arcuate fibers (SAF) of the brain. This anatomy is not very well depicted in literature. AIM: The aim was to study the connections of the short association fibers of the frontal lobe of the brain. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Five formalin-fixed frozen cadaveric brains were studied by using Klinger's method of white fiber dissection. The superficial gray matter was cored out and the connections of the SAF were studied. The SAF of each dissected frontal lobe were compared with the other specimens and the similarities and differences between them were r…

Theory of mind and alexithymia in patients with cryptogenic frontal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate social cognitive functions, specifically theory of mind (ToM) and alexithymia, in patients with cryptogenic frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE) without detectable structural brain lesions, and examine their associations with clinical, and demographic characteristics. METHODS: A total of 14 patients with cryptogenic FLE, and 30 age-, sex-, and education-matched healthy controls (HCs) were included. The participants were aged 18 years or older. TheReading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET)was used to assess ToM, and theToronto Alexithymia Scale-20 (TAS-20)was used to evaluate al…

Aging modulates frontal lobes involvement in emotion regulation processing.

Emotion regulation (ER) is the process by which individuals can modulate the intensity of their emotional experience and it plays a crucial … ectivity. Based on our results, we suggest that a de-differentiation mechanism, known to affect the frontal lobes brain activity and connectivity in older subjects, might explain our findings.

Learning the hierarchical organization of the frontal lobe with differential causal effects.

In this video article, accompanying the paper "An approach to learning the hierarchical organization of the frontal lobe", we discuss a data driven approach to learning brain connectivity. Hierarchical models of brain connectivity are useful to understand how the brain can process sensory information, make decisions, and perform other high-level tasks. Despite extensive research, understanding the structure of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) remains a crucial challenge. In this work, we propose an approach to studying brain signals and uncovering characteristics of the underlying neural circuity, …

Frontal lobe epilepsy: an eye tracking study of memory and attention.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the characteristics and mechanisms of working memory impairment in patients with frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE) through a memory game paradigm combined with eye tracking technology. METHOD: We included 44 patients with FLE and 50 healthy controls (HC). All participants completed a series of neuropsychological scale assessments and a short-term memory game on an automated computer-based memory evaluation platform with an eye tracker. RESULTS: Memory scale scores of FLE patients including digit span (U = 747.50, p = 0.007), visual recognition (U = 766.50, p = 0.010), and log…

The alterations of degree centrality in the frontal lobe of patients with panic disorder.

Objective: The brain network in panic disorder (PD) is still an intriguing issue for research. In this study, we hoped to investigate the ro … between the DC values and illness duration. Conclusion: The DC seemed significantly altered in the frontal lobe of PD patients. The role of the frontal lobe might be more emphasized in the pathophysiology research for PD.

Differences in Frontal Lobe Dysfunction in Patients with Episodic and Chronic Migraine.

Neuroimaging and neuropsychological investigations have indicated that migraineurs exhibit frontal lobe-related cognitive impairment. We investigated whether orbitofrontal and dorsolateral functioning differed between individuals with episodic migraine (EM) and chronic migraine (CM), focusing on orbitofrontal dysfunction because it is implicated in migraine chronification and medication overuse headache (MOH) in migraineurs. This cross-sectional study recruited women with CM with/without MOH (CM + MOH, CM - MOH), EM, and control participants who were matched in terms of age and education. We c…

The understanding of mental states and the cognitive phenotype of frontal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies of frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE) have documented different impairments of theory of mind (ToM), while the study of frontal lobe (FL) lesion without seizures has produced inconsistent results. Given the role played by the FLs in ToM, we evaluated this and other functions in patients with FLE with and without FL lesions. The main objective was to clarify the salience of ToM impairment in the cognitive pattern of FLE and its capacity to discriminate these patients from healthy subjects. The effects of FL lesions on ToM were also explored. METHODS: Seventy-five adult pat…
