Hermaphroditic origins of anisogamy.

Anisogamy-the size dimorphism of gametes-is the defining difference between the male and female sexual strategies. Game-theoretic thinking led to the first convincing explanation for the evolutionary origins of anisogamy in the 1970s. Since then, formal game-theoretic models have continued to refine our understanding of when and why anisogamy should evolve. Such models typically presume that the earliest anisogamous organisms had separate sexes. However, in most taxa, there is no empirical evidence to support this assumption. Here, we present a model of the coevolution of gamete size and sex a

Fighting in professional ice hockey: it's time for a change.

Ice hockey has long been defined by a level of violence not seen in other sports. The rough-and-tough vigilante nature of the game was often employed as a method of enticing fans. Play in the National Hockey League (NHL) evolved throughout the 20th century as the rules governing it did. The nuances of what was allowed on the ice was slowly defined, but the league always fell short of an outright ban on fighting. Notably, the NHL allows fighting while international and Olympic leagues do not. Proponents of fighting's continued presence in the NHL argue that it can attract fans, facilitate momen

Does eye-tracking have an effect on economic behavior?

Eye-tracking is becoming an increasingly popular tool for understanding the underlying behavior driving human decisions. However, an important unanswered methodological question is whether the use of an eye-tracking device itself induces changes in participants' behavior. We study this question using eight popular games in experimental economics chosen for their varying levels of theorized susceptibility to social desirability bias. We implement a simple between-subject design where participants are randomly assigned to either a control or an eye-tracking treatment. In seven of the eight games

Spatial vs. non-spatial eco-evolutionary dynamics in a tumor growth model.

Metastatic prostate cancer is initially treated with androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). However, resistance typically develops in about 1 year - a clinical condition termed metastatic castrate-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). We develop and investigate a spatial game (agent based continuous space) of mCRPC that considers three distinct cancer cell types: (1) those dependent on exogenous testosterone (T+), (2) those with increased CYP17A expression that produce testosterone and provide it to the environment as a public good (TP), and (3) those independent of testosterone (T-). The interactio

Social learning promotes institutions for governing the commons.

Theoretical and empirical research highlights the role of punishment in promoting collaborative efforts. However, both the emergence and the stability of costly punishment are problematic issues. It is not clear how punishers can invade a society of defectors by social learning or natural selection, or how second-order free-riders (who contribute to the joint effort but not to the sanctions) can be prevented from drifting into a coercion-based regime and subverting cooperation. Here we compare the prevailing model of peer-punishment with pool-punishment, which consists in committing resources,

Disrupted brain functional networks in adolescents and young adults with gaming disorder during social interaction: An fNIRS study.

BACKGROUND: Gaming disorder (GD) is increasingly recognized for its adverse impact on social functioning, yet the underlying neural mechanisms remain unclear, particularly during real-time social interactions. This study examined neural differences in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and temporoparietal junction (TPJ) during cooperation and competition tasks in adolescents and young adults with GD. METHODS: Using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), we examined 175 male participants, classified into Gaming Disorder (n = 42), Hazardous Gaming (n = 69), and Healthy Control (n = 64) groups.

Acute hunger does not always undermine prosociality.

It has been argued that, when they are acutely hungry, people act in self-protective ways by keeping resources to themselves rather than sharing them. In four studies, using experimental, quasi-experimental, and correlational designs (total N = 795), we examine the effects of acute hunger on prosociality in a wide variety of non-interdependent tasks (e.g. dictator game) and interdependent tasks (e.g. public goods games). While our procedures successfully increase subjective hunger and decrease blood glucose, we do not find significant effects of hunger on prosociality. This is true for both de

Development and Feasibility Study of Sustainable ePlate: A Web-Based Serious Game for Multidimensional Sustainable Healthy Diet Interventions in Schools.

BACKGROUND: School-based sustainable and healthy diet (SHD) interventions often inadequately capture the multidimensional nature of sustainability, with socioeconomic and cultural dimensions frequently underrepresented. While digital interventions can facilitate the integration of multiple SHD components, maintaining user engagement remains a persistent challenge that can compromise intervention effectiveness. Digital serious games represent a promising intervention strategy that can address both limitations by delivering multidimensional SHD content through interactive and engaging learning,

Improvement of Game Users' Depressive Symptoms via Behavioral Activation in a Massive Multiplayer Online Game: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Online games developed to improve mental health symptoms are reportedly effective among game users. However, it has not been verified whether massive multiplayer online games (MMOGs) developed for leisure purposes are effective in improving users' mental health symptoms. OBJECTIVE: Based on 2 theoretical frameworks, this study examined whether MMOGs improve depression and social anxiety. First, behavioral activation theory posits that depressive symptoms improve through the repetition of reward-linked behaviors. Second, inhibitory learning theory suggests that exposure to social s

The evolutionary ecology of molecular replicators.

By reasonable criteria, life on the Earth consists mainly of molecular replicators. These include viruses, transposons, transpovirons, coviruses and many more, with continuous new discoveries like Sputnik Virophage. Their study is inherently multidisciplinary, spanning microbiology, genetics, immunology and evolutionary theory, and the current view is that taking a unified approach has great power and promise. We support this with a new, unified, model of their evolutionary ecology, using contemporary evolutionary theory coupling the Price equation with game theory, studying the consequences o…

Serious Games: Human-AI Interaction, Evolution, and Co-evolution.

The serious games between humans and AI have only just begun. Evolutionary Game Theory (EGT) models the competitive and cooperative strategies of biological entities. EGT could help predict the potential evolutionary equilibrium of humans and AI. The objective of this work was to examine EGT models relevant to human-AI interaction, evolution, and co-evolution. Of the 13 EGT models considered, three were examined: the Hawk-Dove (HD) Game, the Iterated Prisoner's Dilemma (IPD), and the War of Attrition (WOA). The rationale for this selection is that these three models represent canonical archety…

Neurodevelopmental disorders: assessing and training working memory.

It is vital that working memory capacity can be assessed and trained with motivating resources, in a personalized way in children with neurodevelopmental disorders. This paper illustrates the possibility of a serious game, such as WorM, to assess and train children's working memory capacity. WorM was designed, developed and evaluated through three studies (Study 1: informative, Study 2: validation and Study 3: user studies). The first two qualitative studies employ in-depth interviews and focus group discussions, to identify, argue and validate suitable design aspects guided by interviews from

Borderline personality disorder, but not euthymic bipolar disorder, is associated with a failure to sustain reciprocal cooperative behaviour: implications for spectrum models of mood disorders.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) and bipolar disorder (BD) have overlapping clinical presentations and symptoms - sources of persistent clinical confusion. Game-theory can characterize how social function might be sub-optimal in the two disorders and move the field beyond the anecdotal description of clinical history. Here, we tested the hypothesis that BPD and BD can be distinguished on the basis of diminished reciprocal altruism in iterated Prisoner's Dilemma (PD) games. METHOD: Twenty females with BPD, 20 females with euthymic BD and 20 healthy (non-clinical) females, matc

The Influence of Social Relationships on Third-Party Punishment: The Roles of Relationship Type Congruence and Threat Perception.

Third-party punishment involves bystanders voluntarily incurring costs to punish norm violators, thereby maintaining social norms and cooperation. While prior research shows reduced punishment when the bystander and violator are friends, less is known about how the violator-victim relationship affects such punishment. Based on deterrence theory, punishment serves both to sanction violations and deter future threats. Accordingly, using the Dictator Game-third-party punishment paradigm across five experiments with a primary adult sample, this study investigated the impact of social relationships

An experimental study of spider-related covariation bias in 8- to 13-year-old children.

Covariation bias can be defined as phobic subjects' tendency to overestimate the association between phobic stimuli and aversive outcomes. The current study presents two experiments that examined this type of cognitive bias in children aged 8-13 years (N=147 in Experiment 1, N=240 in Experiment 2). Children completed a self-report questionnaire for measuring spider fear and then participated in a card game in which fear-relevant (i.e., spider) and fear-irrelevant (i.e., weapon and Pokémon) pictures were equally paired with negative and positive outcomes (respectively losing and winning candy).

A game-theoretic approach to donor kidney sharing.

Graft survival in renal transplantation is a function, amongst other things, of the degree of histocompatibility lymphocyte-A (HLA) tissue matching achieved between donor and recipient. Yet a donor procured at centre A might match a transplant candidate at centre B and vice versa. This raises the question of whether, and under what circumstances, surgeons will offer and exchange donor kidneys and gain from such trade in terms of graft survival. We analyse the problem in a game-theoretic framework where the choice of strategy 'to offer or not?' is evaluated in the context of the uncertainty of

Diagnosis of acute periodontal lesions.

BACKGROUND: In the first decade of this century players in the National Football League, the NFL community, fans, even the public at large, became aware that multiple concussions, heretofore considered inconsequential, could have devastating consequences later in life. RESULTS: Since 1978, each one of the 32 teams in the NFL plays 16 games in the regular season. In the 25 years from 1978 to 2004 home advantage in the regular season tended to increase with Game Number (1-16). Then in the following decade (2005-2014) it changed direction and tended clearly to decrease. The change in direction w

Evaluation of an educational board game to improve use of the partograph in sub-Saharan Africa: A quasi-experimental study.

BACKGROUND: The partograph is a tool used to record labour observations and support decision-making. Although used globally, it has not reached its full potential. We aimed to determine whether an educational board game can improve labour-monitoring skills and influence practice. STUDY DESIGN: A quasi-experimental study, underpinned by Kirkpatrick's evaluation model, was used. Midwives and student midwives from Malawi, Kenya and Tanzania were given an identical hypothetical case-scenario of a woman in labour pre-and post-implementation of a game, to assess recording and interpretation abiliti

Perceived social pressure and intention to play through injuries in junior ice hockey: The sporting environment matters.

Playing when injured is a risky yet common business among ice hockey players. Conceptualized within the framework of the theory of planned behaviour, the current cross-sectional study aimed to test a multiple-mediator model linking players' perceived social pressure to their intention to play when injured. We tested whether social pressure is directly and indirectly (via attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control avoidance, and situational temptation) related to intention to play when injured. We recruited 186 junior players aged 16-20 years (mean age = 17.85; standard deviatio
