[Radiological changes of the lungs induced by inhalation of irritating gases (author's transl)].

The radiological changes and clinical symptoms induced by in 109 persons by inhalation of irritant gases are described. Seven persons developed pulmonary oedema, abnormal radiological manifestations were observed in 19 while 81 persons there were no detectable radiological changes. Toxic pulmonary oedema is frequently detected earlier by roentgenologic means than clinically. The length of the radiological latent period depends not only on the concentration of the irritant but also on the type of the gaseous substance. The first roentgenologic signs of toxic pulmonary oedema are broadening and …

[The effect of nasal obstruction on the susceptibility of mice to noxious gases (author's transl)].

The effect of nasal obstruction on mice--the maice were forced to breathe through the mouth--was studied when the animals were exposed to noxious gases. It was noted that the forced mouth breathing made the mice less vulnerable to hydrogen sulfide, carbon monoxide and toluen vapor when expressed by the time interval before they lost righting reflex or showed respiratory arrest. The levels of the gases which could induce these sings within 5-10 minutes were significantly elevated with the "mouth breathing" mice. Possible mechanisms for this phenomenon and its application for men were discussed.

Phosphate Additives for Aging Inhibition of Impregnated Activated Carbon against Hazardous Gases.

Impregnated activated carbons (IACs) used in air filtration gradually lose their efficacy for the chemisorption of noxious gases when exposed to humidity due to impregnated metal deactivation. In order to stabilize IACs against aging, and to prolong the filters' shelf life, inorganic phosphate compounds (phosphoric acid and its three salts, NaHPO4, Na2HPO4, and Na3PO4) were used as anti-aging additives for two different chromium-free IACs impregnated with copper, zinc, molybdenum, and triethylenediamine (TEDA). Phosphoric acid, monosodium, and disodium phosphate were found to be very efficient…

Binding indirect greenhouse gases OCS and CS2 by nitrogen heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs).

Carbon disulfide (CS2) and carbonyl sulfide (OCS) are indirect greenhouse gases that can be effectively trapped by classical, abnormal and remote nitrogen heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), according to high level ab initio calculations. The process is described through a reaction profile involving two minima, a non-covalent complex and a covalently bound product, connected by a single transition state. Both CS2 and OCS react towards NHCs in a similar way, forming a new C-C bond and leading to very stable products with feasible barriers in many cases, although they vary significantly depending on t…

Gasotransmitter delivery via self-assembling peptides: Treating diseases with natural signaling gases.

Nitric oxide (NO), carbon monoxide (CO), and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) are powerful signaling molecules that play a variety of roles in mammalian biology. Collectively called gasotransmitters, these gases have wide-ranging therapeutic potential, but their clinical use is limited by their gaseous nature, extensive reactivity, short half-life, and systemic toxicity. Strategies for gasotransmitter delivery with control over the duration and location of release are therefore vital for developing effective therapies. An attractive strategy for gasotransmitter delivery is though injectable or implantab…

Chronic exposure to anesthetic gases affects balance control in operating room personnel.

Exposure to anesthetic gases is known to alter certain structures and functions of the central nervous system. As the effects of long-term exposure on balance control mechanisms have been the subject of few investigations, these were evaluated in 53 operating room personnel exposed to anesthetic gases and in 53 non-exposed individuals. Balance control was assessed by static and dynamic posturography. Exposed workers had the worst static and dynamic postural performances, particularly in the eyes closed condition, suggesting increased dependency on vision and decreased use of proprioception. Th…

Sulfur dioxide treatment from flue gases using a biotrickling filter-bioreactor system.

Complete treatment of sulfur dioxide (SO2) from flue gases in a two-stage process consisting of a biotrickling filter followed by biological post-treatment unit was investigated. The biotrickling filter could remove 100% of influent SO2 from simulated flue gas at an empty bed residence time of 6 s for a concentration range of 300-1000 ppm(v). All the absorbed SO2 was recovered in the biotrickling filter liquid effluent as sulfite (a product of chemical reaction of SO2) and sulfate (product of biological oxidation of sulfite). The biotrickling filter liquid effluent was further processed biolog…

Stage 1 palliation of hypoplastic left heart syndrome: implications of blood gases.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate ratios of pulmonary-to-systemic blood flows (Qp/Qs) after stage I palliation (Norwood operation) for hypoplastic left heart syndrome and to determine whether early postoperative death can be associated with abnormalities of Qp/Qs ratios. DESIGN: Retrospective. SETTING: University hospital. PARTICIPANTS: Patients who underwent stage I palliation (Norwood operation) for hypoplastic left heart syndrome (n = 76). INTERVENTIONS: None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: The results of the last intraoperative blood gas analysis were compared between patients who survived the d

Interpretation of neonatal blood gases, Part I: Physiology and acid-base homeostasis.

Accurate interpretation of blood gases is paramount in clinical management in the NICU. This interpretation should be based on a sound understanding of acid-base physiology. Acid-base homeostasis depends on a series of complex chemical reactions controlled by the kidneys and the lungs. The maintenance of a blood pH within the narrow range required for normal cellular reactions requires a balance between acid production and excretion. Somewhat separate but equally important to blood gas interpretation is an understanding of oxygen transport. Included in this is the relationship between oxygen a…

Orbital and Spin Edelstein Effects in KTaO3(110) Two-Dimensional Electron Gases.

The orbital Edelstein effect converts an electric field into a non-equilibrium orbital polarization, opening new opportunities for orbitronics. Although signatures of the orbital Edelstein effect have been reported, its microscopic mechanisms and quantitative validation remain underexplored. Here, by directly linking the atomic structure of KTaO 3 ${\rm KTaO}_3$ (110) two-dimensional electron gases to both their calculated and measured electronic band dispersions, we predict and provide experimental evidence for a significant orbital Edelstein contribution that governs the anisotropy of its …

Temperature-Induced Quantum Migration and local heat capacity in confined Fermi gases.

Temperature-Induced Quantum Migration (TIQM) is a macroscopic quantum phenomenon that fundamentally reshapes the local thermodynamics of confined systems. While previously explored in Maxwell-Boltzmann and Bose gases, we here extend the TIQM framework to noninteracting Fermi gases confined in anisometric rectangular domains. These domains are characterized by D_{I}, representing the number of dimensions that remain unconfined. We derive the local heat capacity and demonstrate that the standard temperature derivative of local energy yields unphysical negative regions, a discrepancy resolved by …
