The cytokinin response regulator (ARR) gene is essential for cytokinin signal transduction, which plays a crucial role in plant growth and development. However, the functional mechanism of ARR genes in cotton leaf abscission remains incompletely understood. In this study, a total of 86 ARR genes were identified within the genome of Gossypium hirsutum. These genes were categorized into four distinct groups based on their phylogenetic characteristics, supported by analyses of gene structures and conserved protein motifs. The GhARR genes exhibited an uneven distribution across 25 chromosomes, wit

BACKGROUND: Soft rot, a devastating fungal disease, severely impacts kiwifruit during postharvest storage, causing substantial fruit damage and rendering the fruit inedible. Botryosphaeria dothidea (B. dothidea) is the primary pathogen causing kiwifruit soft rot, but its pathogenic mechanism remains unclear.
RESULTS: In this study, morphological observation, transcriptome sequencing, and untargeted metabolomics were employed to analyze the changes in 'Jinkui' kiwifruit after artificial inoculation with B. dothidea. The results showed that obvious lesions began to appear on the fruit surface a

Annexins are a conserved family of calcium- and phospholipid-binding proteins. Despite their ubiquity and ancient origin, their physiological functions are not fully understood. Numerous studies have shown that the ectopic expression of some annexins can ameliorate the adverse effects of numerous abiotic stresses through modulation of reactive oxygen species accumulation and/or abscisic acid signaling. To gain further insight into the molecular mechanisms of this activity, we studied transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana (Arabidopsis) plants with increased expression of ANNEXIN1 (ATANN1) in the wild

BACKGROUND: Arabinogalactan-proteins (AGPs) are ubiquitous components of cell walls throughout the plant kingdom and are extensively post translationally modified by conversion of proline to hydroxyproline (Hyp) and by addition of arabinogalactan polysaccharides (AG) to Hyp residues. AGPs are implicated to function in various aspects of plant growth and development, but the functional contributions of AGP glycans remain to be elucidated. Hyp glycosylation is initiated by the action of a set of Hyp-O-galactosyltransferase (Hyp-O-GALT) enzymes that remain to be fully characterized.
RESULTS: Thr

Cross-talk between hormones is required for plant response to developmental cues and environmental stresses. This cross-talk is achieved through several regulators located in convergence point of distinct hormonal signaling. In plant defense responses, salicylic acid and jasmonic acid affect each other in antagonistic manner. In a recent study we showed that AtMYB44 transcription factor positively regulates SA-mediated defense expression and enhanced resistance to Pst DC3000. On the other hand, AtMYB44 negatively regulates expression of JA-mediated defense gene expression and downregulated res

Fruit color is a crucial biological trait of apple and is closely correlated with its nutritional value. The coloration of apple fruit is primarily determined by the anthocyanin accumulation in the peel. Nevertheless, the molecular mechanisms underlying peel anthocyanin accumulation in apple remain poorly understood. In the present study, we updated the apple genome annotation, which provides a valuable resource for the identification of novel genes and further functional studies on apple peel coloration. Using RNA-seq transcriptome analysis, we systematically characterized the regulatory mech

BACKGROUND: Soybean is a crucial global source of protein and oil. The CBP/p300 histone acetyltransferases (HACs) are key transcriptional regulators, yet their diversity and functions in soybean remain unexplored at a pan-genomic level.
RESULTS: Here, we constructed a pan-genomic resource for the HAC gene family across 29 wild, landrace, and cultivated soybean accessions, identifying 142 HAC genes. These genes are confined to chromosomes 7, 8, 15, and 19, indicating strong evolutionary constraints. Phylogenetic analysis divided HACs into five subgroups with distinct domain architectures: Grou

Transfer RNA-derived fragments (tRFs) are noncoding small RNAs derived from transfer RNAs (tRNAs) in microorganisms, animals and plants. In plants, tRFs are known to respond to environmental stimuli, including heat, oxidative stress and UV radiation; however, their specific functions in horticultural plants, such as grapevine, remain poorly understood. In this study, we used RNA-seq to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in grape leaves exposed to UV-C radiation. A total of 1329 and 8055 of genes were differentially expression after 1 and 6 h of UV-C treatment, respectively. We iden

Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge is an important traditional herb. Salvia miltiorrhiza is distributed in the Sichuan province of China (here called SC). Under natural conditions, it does not bear seeds and its sterility mechanism is still unclear. Through artificial cross, there was defective pistil and partial pollen abortion in these plants. Electron microscopy results showed that the defective pollen wall was caused by delayed degradation of the tapetum. Due to the lack of starch and organelle, the abortive pollen grains showed shrinkage. RNA-seq was performed to explore the molecular mechanisms o

BACKGROUND: miRNAs are a type of conserved, small RNA molecule that regulate gene expression and play an important role in the growth and development of plants. miRNAs are involved in seed germination, root development, shoot apical meristem maintenance, leaf development, and flower development by regulating various target genes. However, the role of miRNAs in the mechanism of tea plant flower sterility remains unclear. Therefore, we performed miRNA sequencing on the flowers of fertile male parents, female parents, and sterile offspring.
RESULTS: A total of 55 known miRNAs and 90 unknown miRN

Soil secondary salinization caused by excess nitrate addition is one of the major obstacles in greenhouse vegetable production. Excess nitrate inhibited the growth of tomato plants, while application of 100 μM H2S donor NaHS efficiently increased the plant height, fresh and dry weight of shoot and root, root length, endogenous H2S contents and L-cysteine desulfhydrases activities. NaHS altered the oxidative status of nitrate-stressed plants as inferred by changes in reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation and lipid peroxidation accompanied by regulation of the activities of superoxide dismu

Plant development relies on a complex network of transcription factors and hormone signalling pathways that guide pattern formation and developmental transitions in the meristems. Yet, how this core network is regulated to enable developmental plasticity remains poorly understood. A key question is how information about nutrient availability influences growth decisions, with nutrients acting not only as substrates for energy production and anabolism but also as regulatory signals. Here, we review recent advances in plant nutrient signalling during development, focussing on how carbon and nitro

The expression pattern of pathogenesis-related genes PR-1, PR-2 and PR-5, considered as markers for salicylic acid (SA)-dependent systemic acquired resistance (SAR), was examined in the roots and shoots of tomato plants pre-treated with SA and subsequently infected with root-knot nematodes (RKNs) (Meloidogyne incognita). PR-1 was up-regulated in both roots and shoots of SA-treated plants, whereas the expression of PR-5 was enhanced only in roots. The over-expression of PR-1 in the whole plant occurred as soon as 1 day after SA treatment. Up-regulation of the PR-1 gene was considered to be the

Micro RNAs (miRNAs) play crucial regulatory roles in multiple biological processes. Recently they have garnered the attention for their strong influence on the secondary metabolite production in plants. Their role in the regulation of artemisinin (ART) biosynthesis is, however, not fully elucidated. ART is a potent anti-malarial compound recommended by WHO for the treatment of drug-resistant malaria. It is produced by Artemisia annua (A. annua). The lower in planta content of ART necessitates a deep understanding of regulatory mechanisms involved in the biosynthesis of this metabolite. In this

Black spot disease is an important disease infected by Alternaria brassicicola, which seriously affects the yield and quality of Brassica juncea. Arachidonic acid (ARA), a polyunsaturated fatty acid, induces the defense response of plants against pathogens. Here, we analyzed the induced resistance effect of ARA against black spot disease, and further revealed the underlying mechanism via physiological and transcriptome analyses. Treatment with 10 μM ARA exhibited the strongest resistance induction, dramatically improving the activities of defense enzymes (laccase, phenylalanine ammonia-lyase,

Phosphorus (P) deficiency stress in combination with biotic stress(es) severely impacts crop yield. Plant responses to P deficiency overlapping with that of other stresses exhibit a high degree of complexity involving different signaling pathways. On the one hand, plants engage with rhizosphere microbiome/arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi for improved phosphate (Pi) acquisition and plant stress response upon Pi deficiency; on the other hand, this association is gets disturbed under Pi sufficiency. This nutrient-dependent response is highly regulated by the phosphate starvation response (PSR) mediat

Plants regulate root development in response to fluctuating environmental conditions, including establishing symbiotic relationships with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and nitrogen-fixing bacteria under nutrient limitation. These processes are orchestrated by plant hormones, particularly gibberellins, and the repressors of gibberellin signalling, DELLA proteins. Gibberellin and DELLAs serve as critical regulators in symbiotic signalling and root organogenesis, integrating hormonal and environmental cues with cellular patterning to direct plant development. This review explores the current under

Plants are exposed to varied biotic stresses, including sequential or simultaneous attack by insects and pathogens. To overcome these complex stresses, plants must perceive each of the stresses, then integrate and relay the information throughout the plant body and eventually activate local and systemic resistance responses. Previous molecular genetic studies identified jasmonic acid and salicylic acid as key plant hormones of wound and immune responses. These hormones, combined with their antagonistic interaction, play critical roles in the initiation and regulation of defense responses again
