Hospital sewage is considered an environment with the potential to favor the spread and increase of multidrug-resistant bacteria (MDR). The increase in antimicrobial resistance is one of the greatest global threats today. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the profile of antimicrobial susceptibility and virulence factors in Enterobacteriaceae isolated from the sewage of a tertiary hospital located in southeastern Brazil. For bacterial isolation, membrane filtering, serial dilution, and spread-plate techniques were used. The bacterial isolates were identified using the MALDI-TOF (matrix-as

We report the characterization of a new gene (E4.5) that maps at chromosome band 13q14.3, a chromosomal area frequently deleted in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and in other lymphoid malignancies. E4.5 gene encodes for a 4 kb mRNA expressed in various tissues and has an open reading frame of 531 amino acids. The predicted E4.5 protein shows strong homology with the human regulator of chromosome condensation (RCC1) protein, the principal GTP exchange factor for Ran protein. The E4.5 protein contains a BTB domain in its N-terminus, a protein-protein interaction motif. Therefore, we propose

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a significant opportunistic pathogen in healthcare-associated infections. Its intrinsic resistance and ability to acquire resistance genes pose therapeutic challenges, particularly with the emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR), extensively drug-resistant (XDR), and pan-drug-resistant (PDR) strains. This study aimed to assess the prevalence, antimicrobial susceptibility, and metallo-β-lactamase (MBL) resistance genes (blaNDM, blaOXA48) in P. aeruginosa isolates from clinical samples over 14 months. A total of 4410 clinical samples were processed, yielding 241 non-dup

INTRODUCTION: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen, which causes healthcare-associated infections in immunosuppressed patients. They exhibit resistance to multiple classes of antibiotics via various mechanisms such as the over-expression of efflux pumps, decreased production of the outer membrane protein (D2 porin), over-expression of the chromosomally encoded AmpC cephalosporinase, modification of drugs, and mutation(s) at the target site of the drug. The bacteria also develop antibiotic resistance through the acquisition of resistance genes carried on mobile genetic elements.

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most frequent diseases encountered by humans worldwide. The presence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) harboring several virulence factors, is a major risk factor for inpatients. We sought to investigate the rate of antibiotic resistance and virulence-associated genes among the UPECs isolated from an Iranian symptomatic population.
METHODS: A total of 126 isolates from inpatients with UTI from different wards were identified as UPEC using the conventional microbiological tests. After identification of

Staphylococcus hemolyticus is one of the frequently isolated nosocomial pathogens in immunocompromised patients; however, its genotypic and phenotypic characteristics in burn patients remain largely unknown. In this study, 146 S. haemolyticus strains were collected from the burn unit of a tertiary hospital in Chongqing, southwestern China. Whole genome sequencing was applied to determine the molecular characteristics of these S. haemolyticus isolates. Results showed that sequence type 1 (ST1; 26.7%, 39/146) was the most prevalent lineage, followed by clones ST42 (17.8%, 25/146), ST3 (15.8%, 23

Plasmids which are the mobile part of the bacterial genome can acquire and carry over genes conferring antimicrobial resistance, thus contributing to rapid adaptation of bacterial community to human-defined environment. In 2014, Israeli scientists have reported a large conjugative mega-plasmid pESI (plasmid for emerging S. Infantis) that provides multiple drug resistance (MDR) of Salmonella Infantis isolated from broilers. Later, very similar pESI-like plasmids have been found in Salmonella isolated from poultry in the United States, Italy, Switzerland, Hungary, and Japan. Here we report detec

Pharmaceutical wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are confronted with a wide range of contaminants, resulting in the accumulation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and the evolution of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria. However, the ecological roles of these MDR residents during full-scale wastewater treatment remain unclear. In this study, the core bacterial communities as well as potential MDR bacteria for industrial WWTPs were firstly categorized out. Taxa belonging to MDR bacteria were frequently detected to persist with low relative abundance across different treatment units, even i

Salmonella enterica is a foodborne pathogen showing increasing multidrug resistance (MDR). We characterized the antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genotype using microarrays in a panel of 105 nontyphoidal S. enterica isolated from food animals and foodstuff. Nineteen isolates were chosen on the basis of their MDR and virulence for determination of heavy metal susceptibilities and screened by polymerase chain reaction for heavy metal resistance genes. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) was performed on three isolates carrying clinically important AMR genes and the cdtB toxin gene to detect other heavy m

The increasing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the environment poses a significant threat to public health. In the United States, AMR Salmonella species are associated with over 200,000 human infections annually. Salmonella spp. are frequently detected in aquatic environments, raising concerns about AMR in natural recreational waters. This study investigated the occurrence of antibiotic-resistant Salmonella spp. in Horseshoe Lake and Richland Creek in southern Illinois, USA. Antimicrobial susceptibility of 47 Salmonella isolates was determined using the Kirby-Bauer and broth microdilution as
