Chronic Ulcerative Stomatitis (CUS) as an Interdisciplinary Diagnostic Challenge: A Literature Review.

Chronic ulcerative stomatitis (CUS) is a rarely reported disease affecting the oral cavity, most often affecting middle-aged Caucasian females. The aim of the present study is to present the diagnosis, differentiation, and interdisciplinary treatment of this rare disease. CUS is characterized by the presence of an oral erosive or ulcerative lesion. The autoimmune pathogenesis of CUS includes affecting the antigen's activity by DNA-breaking and protein-hydrolyzing enzymes. The stratified epithelium-specific antinuclear antibodies (SES-ANA) are associated with CUS development. Clinically, the le

Clinical and Histopathologic Characterization of Canine Chronic Ulcerative Stomatitis.

Canine chronic ulcerative stomatitis, also known as chronic ulcerative paradental stomatitis, is a painful condition of the oral cavity. The purpose of this study was to determine if there are commonalities in clinical and radiographic features among patients, whether the histopathologic evaluation might inform the pathogenesis, and whether the condition appears similar to human oral mucosal diseases. To do this, we prospectively collected clinical, radiographic, and histopathologic data from 20 dogs diagnosed with the disease. Clinical data were based on a clinical disease activity index, ora

Oral medicine case book 65: Necrotising stomatitis.

Necrotising stomatitis is a fulminating anaerobic polybacterial infection affecting predominantly the oral mucosa of debilitated malnourished children or immunosuppressed HIV-seropositive subjects. It starts as necrotising gingivitis which progresses to necrotising periodontitis and subsequently to necrotising stomatitis. In order to prevent the progression of necrotising stomatitis to noma (cancrum oris), affected patients should be vigorously treated and may require admission to hospital. Healthcare personnel should therefore be familiar with the signs and symptoms of necrotising gingivitis/

Ulcerative glossitis and stomatitis associated with exudative epidermitis in suckling swine.

Thirty piglets 1 to 4 weeks old from five herds had epidermal, foot, conjunctival and renal lesions typical of exudative epidermitis. Ten piglets had a large central ulceration of the dorsum of the tongue. Three piglets had multiple erosions of the hard palate and one had mucoid degeneration of the urinary bladder epithelium and a thick viscous material in the renal pelvis, ureters and urinary bladder.

Severe erosive stomatitis and giant lymph node hyperplasia of retroperitoneum (Castleman's tumor).

A severe, extensive, erosive stomatitis developed in a 33-year-old Japanese man who had had intraperitoneal giant lymph node hyperplasia (Castleman's tumor) of the hyaline-vascular type. Histologically, there was a dense lymphoid cell infiltration in the dermis with invasion of the mucosal epithelium. It was hypothesized that an autoaggressive attack of lymphoid cells against the epithelium of the oral mucosa played a role in the pathogenesis of this erosive stomatitis and it was suggested that there might be a correlation between the occurrence of stomatitis and the presence of Castleman's tu

Systemic management and periodontal treatment of HIV-necrotizing periodontitis: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing periodontitis (NP) is a rare form of periodontal disease. It can manifest in immunocompromised patients and present as painful and rapidly progressing destruction with necrotic and ulcerated periodontal tissues. This case report describes a rare case of severe NP in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive patient including medical management and periodontal treatment. METHODS: A 28-year-old male presented to the periodontal clinic with chief complaint of severe oral pain leading to loss of chewing ability, spontaneous gingival bleeding, generalized gingival recessi

Mouth Ulcers in Liver Transplant Recipients as an Adverse Reaction to Tacrolimus Used in Immunosuppressive Therapy: A Report of 2 Cases.

BACKGROUND Organ transplant patients take immunosuppressants to prevent transplant rejection. These substances, including cyclosporine, tacrolimus (TAC), sirolimus, and mycophenolate mofetil (MMF), can cause a variety of adverse reactions such as systemic infections, neoplastic lesions, and agranulocytosis, while the oral cavity can present with aphthous ulcers, leucoplakia, glossitis, erosions and ulcers, exophytic lesions in the oral mucosa, gingival hypertrophy, and mucosal hyperplasia. The most commonly used immunosuppressant in liver transplant (LTx) recipients is tacrolimus (TAC). Improv

The differentiation of intraoral ulcers.

Oral lesions commonly seen by primary care physicians represent manifestations of local or systemic disease of infectious, immunogenic, malignant, or traumatic etiology. The patient's history will readily show whether the lesions are acute or chronic, single or multiple, primary or recurrent--classifications that greatly simplify the differential diagnosis.

Periodontal diseases in children and adolescents: a clinician's perspective part.

UNLABELLED: Contrasting forms of periodontal disease can affect children and adolescents with varying prevalence, severity and extent, leading to a diverse prognosis in these age groups. For an early diagnosis and treatment of periodontal conditions in young patients, it is essential for the dental practitioner to be able to identify and classify the disease correctly at the earliest opportunity, applying basic principles along with understanding of aetiology and risk factors. The first part of this article discusses the classification, plaque-induced and non-plaque-induced gingival diseases,

Diagnosis of acute periodontal lesions.

BACKGROUND: In the first decade of this century players in the National Football League, the NFL community, fans, even the public at large, became aware that multiple concussions, heretofore considered inconsequential, could have devastating consequences later in life. RESULTS: Since 1978, each one of the 32 teams in the NFL plays 16 games in the regular season. In the 25 years from 1978 to 2004 home advantage in the regular season tended to increase with Game Number (1-16). Then in the following decade (2005-2014) it changed direction and tended clearly to decrease. The change in direction w

[Oral Langerhans cell granulomatosis simulating necrotizing gingivostomatitis].

An unusual case of nonhealing necrotizing gingivostomatitis in a 66-year-old man is described. Microscopic examination of biopsy material showed an infiltrate of Langerhans cells. Merely oral lesions of Langerhans cell granulomatosis--especially in an old person--occur very seldom.

A necrotizing inflammation in the mucosa of the superior maxilla is described in an infant suffering from benign chronic neutrocytopenia. A connection between primary dentition which occurred at the same time and the basic illness is assumed.
