BACKGROUND: Human snores are caused by vibrating anatomical structures in the upper airway. The glottis is a highly variable structure and a critical organ regulating inhaled flows. Two modalities of chemoradiotherapy for locally advanced squamous cell cancer of oro-hypopharynx and oral cavity were compared in the treatment of 34 patients. Five-year survival after cisplatin, 5-FU, taxotere, and carboplatin plus irradiation with TTD of 68-72 Gy (group 1) was 59.5% versus 13.8% without taxotere (group 2). Relapse was in 9 cases (60%) (4 - group 1 and 5 - group 2). Post-therapeutic complication stage III-IV was 57.8% (group 1) and 48% (group 2).

Incidence rates for laryngeal cancer in Central Europe are among the highest in the world. The authors recruited cases and controls between 2000 and 2002 for the Central and Eastern Europe Multicenter Study to investigate the role of tobacco and alcohol as causes of laryngeal cancer in this region. A total of 384 incident squamous cell cases were included, comprising 254 glottic and 108 supraglottic cancers. Modeling the human larynx can provide insights into the nature of the flow and pressures within the glottis. In this study, the intraglottal pressures and glottal jet flow were studied for a divergent glottis that was symmetric for one case and oblique for another.
