On the Use, Effectiveness, and Safety of Face Masks, Gloves, and Disinfectants to Prevent Transfer of Microbials between the Tattooist and the Customer: A Practical Review of Pros and Cons Including the Occupational Safety of the Tattooist.

Tattooists and their customers are under special risk of airborne infection because of the short distance during the procedure and the unavoidable exchange of expired and inhaled air potentially containing droplets holding pathogenic germs. Moreover, the manual procedure involves a significant risk of contamination through physical contact. A range of personal protective equipment (PPE) is available, including three-layered disposable surgical masks, cotton masks, respirators without or with expiration valve, visors and shields, goggles, medical gloves and aprons. Disinfectant fluids and wipes

Vascular changes of the hand in professional baseball players with emphasis on digital ischemia in catchers.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive trauma to the hand is a concern for baseball players. The present study investigated the effects of repetitive trauma and the prevalence of microvascular pathological changes in the hands of minor league professional baseball players. In contrast to previous investigators, we documented the presence of abnormalities in younger, asymptomatic individuals. METHODS: Thirty-six baseball players on active minor league rosters underwent a history and physical examination of both hands as well as additional specialized tests, including Doppler ultrasound, a timed Allen test, de

Dermatitis in hairdressers (II). Management and prevention.

Hand dermatitis in hairdressers is caused by a variety of factors. Important are the sensitizing and irritant capacities of some hair-cosmetic ingredients, unsafe packaging which causes contamination of the hands, work tables and instruments with hazardous chemicals, absence of protection with adequate gloves and ignorance of safe handling of these chemicals. A strategy is proposed, based on improvement of the safety of ingredients and packaging, use of vinyl gloves and introduction of safe hairdressing procedures. Introduction of this strategy in hairdressing salons with 16 cases of moderate

Prevalence of bovine brucellosis in slaughtered cattle and barriers to better protection of abattoir workers in Ibadan, South-Western Nigeria.

INTRODUCTION: Brucellosis is a neglected zoonosis of public health importance. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence and risk factors of brucellosis among slaughtered cattle as well as challenges to the protection of abattoir workers in Nigeria. METHODS: A slaughterhouse study was conducted in a major abattoir in Ibadan from March to August, 2013. To diagnose brucellosis, serum samples from 1,241 slaughtered cattle were tested using Rose-Bengal test (RBT) and competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (cELISA); again, 57 milk samples were tested with milk ring test (MRT) and

Metacarpal fractures in athletes: treatment, rehabilitation, and safe early return to play.

Specialty gloves and buddy taping of adjacent fingers may cushion impact and dissipate twisting forces so that hands, thumbs, and fingers are protected during play. When fractures occur, athletes must be protected from contact until healing has progressed to a point where reinjury or complications are unlikely and performance standards and expectations can be met. This article outlines a program of fracture management principles and progressive graduated rehabilitation that phase the hand-injured athlete first into general conditioning and non-ball-handling drills, then into return to hand imp

Semipermeable glove membranes--effects on skin barrier repair following SLS irritation.

BACKGROUND: Transepidermal water flux is the regulatory signal for barrier regeneration. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we evaluated the impact of glove membranes, which provide a partial barrier and different water loss rates, on barrier recovery after standardized irritation with sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). METHODS: Twenty-five healthy volunteers were irritated for 24 hr with SLS 1%. Four test areas were marked on clinically normal skin on the upper back. Barrier repair under consecutive dressing with semipermeable membranes (GoreTex, Sympatex, an occlusive membrane (Meditrate Vinyl), and in a

Personal protective equipment for preventing highly infectious diseases due to exposure to contaminated body fluids in healthcare staff.

BACKGROUND: In epidemics of highly infectious diseases, such as Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), healthcare workers (HCW) are at much greater risk of infection than the general population, due to their contact with patients' contaminated body fluids. Contact precautions by means of personal protective equipment (PPE) can reduce the risk. It is unclear which type of PPE protects best, what is the best way to remove PPE, and how to make sure HCW use PPE as instructed. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate which type of full body PPE and which method of donning or doffing

Self-contamination risk and failure modes during high-level PPE doffing: A pilot comparison of 2 powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR) hoods.

BACKGROUND: Personal protective equipment doffing protocols can reduce risks of pathogen self-contamination. Powered air-purifying respirators may increase these risks. This study compares viral contamination and errors during simulated doffing of single-layer versus double-layer hood powered air-purifying respirators. METHODS: Eight participants performed 2 simulations (video recorded for failure modes [FMs] and effects analysis): 1 single-layer hood (laid over Tyvek suit) and 1 double-layer hood (top laid over and bottom tucked into suit). Hoods were contaminated with viruses. After doffing

Cutaneous exposure to warfarin-like anticoagulant causing an intracerebral hemorrhage: a case report.

A case of intercerebral hematoma due to warfarin-induced coagulopathy is presented. The 39-year-old woman had spread a warfarin-type rat poison around her house weekly using her bare hands, with no washing post application. Percutaneous absorption of warfarin causing coagulopathy, reported three times in the past, is a significant risk if protective measures, such as gloves, are not used. An adverse drug interaction with piroxicam, which she took occasionally, may have exacerbated the coagulopathy.

Ice-skating injuries to the hand.

166 patients with injuries due to ice-skating were seen in the local accident and emergency department over a six-month period; 60% of these involved the upper limb. 28 of the upper limb injuries were closed fractures and 24 were lacerations, almost all to the dorsum of the hand. The use of protective gloves would help to prevent these potentially avoidable injuries. "On-site" first-aid facilities help to reduce the demand on the local accident service.

Blue light curing units--a dermatological hazard?

The setting reactions of a large number of dental materials are activated upon exposure to visible blue light emitted from a curing unit. Although the wavelength (lambda) from such devices is principally in the visible spectrum (lambda > 400 nm) a small amount of ultraviolet radiation (UV) is also present. Little attention has been paid to the consequences of such exposure upon the skin of dental surgeons' fingers. This investigation studied the level of UVA I (lambda = 340-400 nm) emitted by three commonly used polymerisation sources and assessed the level of protection afforded by six brands

Personal Protective Equipment and Donning and Doffing Techniques in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Insights From an Internet Search for Protocols.

Background: Due to the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, a need for precise donning and doffing protocols for personal protective equipment (PPE) among healthcare infrastructures is paramount. Procedures involving the cardiac catheterization laboratory (CCL) are routinely non-aerosolizing but have the potential for rapid patient deterioration, creating the need for aerosolizing generating procedures. Multiple societal and governmental guidelines on the use of PPE during medical procedures are available on Internet websites; however, there is limited literature available in

Latex allergies and adverse reactions: a review of the literature.

In the last few years, the allergenic potential of latex has been receiving greater attention. While latex allergies have been widely reported in the literature, the prevalence and severity have rapidly increased in the last few years. The role of rubber in the prevention of HIV infection has played a part in recognizing the allergenic potential, as with increased emphasis on infection control in the dental office has come an increase in complaints of adverse reactions to surgical gloves. A review of the literature reveals latex allergy problems to be not confined to gloves, but to articles of

Acrylate-induced allergic contact dermatitis in a car windscreen repairer.

We report a case of an allergic skin reaction to ultraviolet-cured acrylates in a windscreen repair worker. The patient presented with a 6 month history of fingertip dryness, vesicles and desquamation. He had worked as a self-employed car windscreen repairer for 19 years. Previous management with vinyl glove protection and treatment with clobetasol propionate ointment had produced little improvement. He was patch tested to the British Society for Cutaneous Allergy standard and preservatives series and to the two acrylates used in his work environment, identified using safety data sheets, methy

Influence of repeated contacts on the transfer of elemental metallic lead between compartments in an integrated conceptual model for dermal exposure assessment.

Transfer of contaminants to and from the skin surface has been postulated to occur through a number of different pathways and compartments including: object(s)-to-skin, skin-to-skin, skin-to-clothing, skin-to-gloves, air-to-skin, skin-to-lips, and skin-to-saliva. However, many identified transfer pathways have been only minimally examined to determine the potential for measurable transfer. The purpose of this study was to quantitatively evaluate repeated transfer between different compartments using elemental metallic lead (Pb) in the solid form using a series of systematic measurements in hum
