Examination of a two-year-old boy with bilateral inguinal hernia revealed a firm, smooth, non-tender mass continuous with the upper pole of the testis and extending upwards to the inguinal canal. Histological examination revealed splenic tissue. The article describes the details of this case of splenogonadal fusion and quotes 50 further references from literature.

A retrospective analysis of 177 retrograde venographies of the left renal and gonadal veins was made. Renal venography seems a useful investigation in cases of male infertility without clinically palpable variococele. Selective venography of the internal spermatic vein seems of little value, as it may give false positive ("iatrogenic") spermatic venous reflux. This can be explained by passing the catheter over a competent valve. After operation for subclinical varicocele, the spermiogram does not change, but a pregnancy rate of 30% is obtained. Two cases of gonadal dysgenesis and congenital absence of the vagina are presented. One of the 2 patients studied had a normal female karyotype, an absent vagina, and a uterus represented by 2 thin fibrous bands ending just beneath the urinary bladder in the midline. The other patient had features of Turner syndrome, a 45,X chromosomal complement, and an absent vagina with infantile uterus and fallopian tubes. As gonadal anomalies may coexist in patients with congenital absence of the vagina, laparoscopic evaluation of such patients may be of diagnostic value.

Two sisters, ages 16 and 17, presented with secondary amenorrhea. In addition, primary ovarian failure, gonadal dysgenesis, and normal karyotypes were demonstrated. The most significant finding was a history of mumps, which they caught at the same time, 10 years before the onset of the amenorrhea. This disorder suggests that etiologic and environmental factors could prevail either in utero or during childhood. Three tall, phenotypic female siblings with XY gonadal dysgenesis were found to have short fourth metacarpal bones (bilateral in two and unilateral in the other). Clitoromegaly was observed in the two older siblings, without hirsutism. Bilateral streak gonads were found in all three. The present study deals with pituitary-gonadal function in male heroin addicts, 6 patients with schizophrenia and 31 with mild personality disorders. We examined the serum follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH) and testosterone levels at the moment of hospitalization (at the maximum of heroin addiction), and 48 h and 10 days later. FSH levels were definitely reduced in all the patients and did not change during the period of heroin withdrawal. The ultrastructural findings on the gonad from a patient with testicular feminization syndrome (TFS) are reported. One gonad was the site of dysgerminoma. The other was a dysgenetic testis composed of seminiferoud and Sertoli cell tubules and ovarian cortical stroma-like tissue. Ultrastructurally the tubules were lined by immature Sertoli cells and cells indistinguishable from dark ovarian stromal cells. Similar and/or identical cells were found in the ovarian-like stroma and in the interstitial tissue between the tubules. There were mature and immature Leydig cells in the intertubular areas.

Cytogenetic and histological studies have been carried out on an intersex horse which was clinically diagnosed as a cryptorchid. The horse had the general conformation of a stallion but the external genitalia included a well developed vulva and a penis. The right testis which was descended was devoid of germ cells and the left "gonad" located in the cavum vaginale contained neither testicular nor ovarian tissue.
