In vitro activity of tedizolid against gram-positive bacteria in patients with skin and skin structure infections and hospital-acquired pneumonia: a Korean multicenter study.

We compared the activities of tedizolid to those of linezolid and other commonly used antimicrobial agents against gram-positive cocci recovered from patients with skin and skin structure infections (SSSIs) and hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) in Korean hospitals. Gram-positive isolates were collected from 356 patients with SSSIs and 144 patients with HAP at eight hospitals in Korea from 2011 to 2014. SSSIs included impetigo, cellulitis, erysipelas, furuncles, abscesses, and infected burns. Antimicrobial susceptibility was tested by using the CLSI agar dilution method. All of the gram-positiv…

Leuconostoc species-associated endocarditis.

Leuconostoc species are gram-positive cocci belonging to the Streptococcaceae family. The species were generally regarded as nonpathogenic and of little importance in clinical microbiology until several occurrences of Leuconostoc infections were reported in the literature. Unlike many gram-positive bacteria, Leuconostoc species commonly demonstrate high-level resistance to vancomycin, with preserved sensitivity to most other antibacterial agents. We describe a 55-year-old man who developed endocarditis caused by Leuconostoc species sensitive to vancomycin. The patient received an aortic valve …

Analysis of distribution and antibiotic resistance of pathogens isolated from the paediatric population in Shenmu Hospital from 2011-2015.

Objective This study aimed to investigate the epidemiology and changes in antibacterial susceptibility of children in Shenmu City, northern Shaanxi, and provide a basis for rational drug use. Methods The distribution and drug resistance pattern of pathogenic bacteria isolated from children were retrospectively analysed. Results A total of 573 strains of pathogens were cultivated. A total of 201 (35.07%) strains of Gram-positive cocci and 183 (31.93%) strains of Gram-negative cocci were detected. A total of 189 (32.98%) strains of fungi were detected. The resistance rate of Staphylococcus to pe…

Mycotic aneurysm of the abdominal aorta in a patient undergoing hemodialysis: an unusual complication of Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia.

When Staphylococcus aureus is repeatedly positive in blood cultures even under effective antibiotics therapy (vancomycin, teicoplanin, or rifampin), computed tomography scan and sonography should be performed early to exclude mycotic aneurysm of the deeply seated arteries, especially in patients with abdominal aortic calcification. Before 1990, the most common causative organism of suprarenal aortic mycotic aneurysm was Salmonella; since 1990, it has been gram-positive cocci (i.e., Streptococcus and Staphylococcus) rather than gram-negative bacilli (i.e., Salmonella), possibly because of the m…

Seasonal and monthly variation of Streptococcus pneumoniae and other pathogens in bacteremia (1961-1981).

Laboratory data, on positive blood cultures, were reviewed for the period 1961-1981. A total of 1809 episodes of bacteremia and fungemia were evaluated as to monthly occurrence. Of these, 42% were due to Gram positive cocci, 51% to Gram negative bacilli, 5% to anaerobes and 2% to yeasts. When seasonal patterns were categorized, most were bi- or multiphasic except Streptococcus pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus which yielded mono- and aphasic patterns, respectively. These results show the occurrence of certain pathogens, like S. pneumoniae, to be linked with seasons or months of the year.

Antibiotic resistance of the subgingival microbiota following local tetracycline therapy.

The antibiotic resistance of the subgingival microbiota was studied by 3 approaches. First, we assessed the ability of subgingival isolates … nd cell morphology determination. This study indicated that subgingival sites became colonized with gram-positive cocci in the same time period that an increase of TC-resistant isolates was observed in the first study. This may account for the transient increase in TC resistance, because many gram-positive cocci are intrinsically resistant to TC. In the third approac …

Paper #46: Building the Case for Optimal Prophylaxis for Growth-Friendly Surgery for Non-idiopathic Scoliosis: Using Vancomycin and Aminoglycosides.

The pathogens and susceptibility profiles of deep SSIs following growth friendly surgery for children with non-idiopathic scoliosis were assessed to optimize perioperative prophylaxis. Gram positive cocci were detected in 90.1% of SSIs; susceptibility to cefazolin and vancomycin remained unchanged. Gram negative rods (GNR) were detected in 16.5% of SSIs; susceptibility to cefazolin decreased but susceptibility to aminoglycosides increased. Aminoglycosides play a critical role in GNR coverage and should be incorporated into prophylaxis protocols.

Periprosthetic joint infection caused by kytococcus schroeteri: The first reported case and a review of the literature.

Oftentimes, Gram-positive cocci are the cause for periprosthetic joint infections (PJI). Most of these infections include bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis or other coagulase-negative staphylococci. We here present the first case of a PJI caused by Kytococcus schroeteri. While being a Gram-positive coccus, it is very rarely the cause for infections in the human body. K. schroeteri is part of the micrococcus branch and often encountered as a symbiotic bacterium living on the skin. Regarding its pathogenic potential, not a lot is known since less than a few dozen…

Vagococcus fluvialis first isolated from the ascitic fluid of a patient with cirrhosis.

Ascites is the most common complication of the decompansated cirrhosis. The most common organisms isolated in patients with ascidic fluid infections and spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) are intestinal pathogens including Escherichia coli, Gram-positive cocci (mainly Streptococcus species) and Enterococci. As an infectious pathogen Vagococcus spp. can be isolated from animals such as pigs, cats, horses and fishes and also rarely in humans. In this paper, we present a case of Vagococcus fluvialis peritonitis which is the first one reported in a cirrhotic patient with ascites.

Reduction of Fe(III), Cr(VI), U(VI), and Tc(VII) by Deinococcus radiodurans R1.

Deinococcus radiodurans is an exceptionally radiation-resistant microorganism capable of surviving acute exposures to ionizing radiation doses of 15,000 Gy and previously described as having a strictly aerobic respiratory metabolism. Under strict anaerobic conditions, D. radiodurans R1 reduced Fe(III)-nitrilotriacetic acid coupled to the oxidation of lactate to CO(2) and acetate but was unable to link this process to growth. D. radiodurans reduced the humic acid analog anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS) to its dihydroquinone form, AH(2)DS, which subsequently transferred electrons to the Fe(I

The microbiology of bacteriuria in men: a 5-year study at a Veterans' Affairs hospital.

Bacteriuria and urinary tract infection occur relatively frequently in older men, but data regarding the causative microorganisms are limited. We retrospectively identified all positive cultures of urine specimens (n = 4943) obtained over a 5-year period at our institution. We determined the frequency of causative microorganisms and grouped these by Gram type, setting of patient care, and method of urine specimen collection. We also assessed the performance characteristics of the Gram-stained smear of uncentrifuged urine. Among our patients, Gram-positive cocci (GPC) were isolated as often as …

Rapid diagnosis of Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia using S. aureus PNA FISH.

In the study presented here, the performance of the S. aureus PNA FISH assay was evaluated using 285 blood cultures (from 104 patients) that had gram-positive cocci resembling staphylococci on Gram stain. The new molecular test is based on a fluorescence in situ hybridization assay using peptide nucleic acid probes targeting Staphylococcus aureus 16S rRNA and is designed for the rapid identification of Staphylococcus aureus directly from positive blood cultures. The sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values of the S. aureus PNA FISH for the rapid identification of S…

Microbial and clinical determinants of time-to-positivity in patients with bacteraemia.

For patients not receiving appropriate antibiotics, detection of Gram-positive cocci in clusters within 14 h was predictive of Staph. aureus; a time-to-positivity of >21 h ruled out the possibility that a Gram-positive organism in chains was a beta-haemolytic streptococcus or Strep. pneumoniae, and a time-to-positivity of < or =12 h …

Effect of the addition of Peptostreptococcus productus ATCC35244 on the gastro-intestinal microbiota and its activity, as simulated in an in vitro simulator of the human gastro-intestinal tract.

Peptostreptococcus productus ATCC35244, a reductive acetogenic strain, was added daily over 9 successive days to the fourth vessel (ascending colon) of the SHIME, a six-stage reactor system simulating the in vivo continuous culture conditions of the human gastro-intestinal tract. Final numbers of organisms (cfu)/ml reactor contents (c) were attained such that log10c = 6.9 +/- 0.1. The addition caused the CH4 production to decrease below the detection limit while total gas and CO2 production in the fifth (transverse colon) and sixth reactor (descending colon) were lowered and the acetic acid co
