We present a case of tricuspid valve endocarditis in a 40-y-old woman with a history of heroin abuse. Blood cultures yielded a Gram-positive rod, preliminarily identified as "Actinomyces turicensis-like", but subsequently formally described as Actinomyces funkei sp. nov. The patient was cured by prolonged treatment with 10 weeks of i.v. antibiotics followed by oral antibiotic treatment for 12 weeks.

We report a case of Desulfovibrio desulfuricans bacteremia in a 60-year-old-man. In our case, anaerobic blood culture bottle turned out positive after five days' incubation. A retrospective study of the microscopical lesions of nine cases of enteric listeriosis of sheep was conducted. Lesions were present variably in the abomasum and the small and large intestines. We report the first case of pulmonary Corynebacterium ulcerans infection mimicking Churg-Strauss syndrome (CSS). The in vitro activity of imipenem and meropenem on strains of Gram-negative rods producing extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) and inducible beta-lactamase (IBL) was studied using the Etest. Mobiluncus curtisii was isolated from the blood of a 35-year-old man with a medical history of ulcerative colitis who was admitted unconscious to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). A CT scan revealed massive intracerebral hemorrhage in the left hemisphere. Temperature remained constant over 38.5 degrees C; therefore, two sets of blood cultures were collected. One anaerobic bottle BacT/ALERT SN (bioMerieux, France) was detected as positive after 5 days of incubation and a Gram stain confirmed a gram variable curved-shaped rod. The patient died 18 h after being admitted to the hospital.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate causes of fever, including resistance patterns, in patients undergoing cancer treatment in Malawi.
METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, enrolled patients undergoing chemotherapy at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe, Malawi were given a thermometer. If a temperature of ≥38°C was recorded, they were instructed to return for hospitalization, standardized fever workup, and antibiotics. All patients were followed through 90 days post-fever event or completion of chemotherapy.

Endotracheal aspirates (ETAs) from mechanically ventilated pediatric patients frequently are cultured as part of an evaluation for suspected sepsis. There are now well-defined criteria for rejecting low-yield ETAs from adults, but it is uncertain whether the same criteria can be applied to ETAs from children.
