A narrative review with grounded theory to evaluate the evidence for cleaning the filter body of point-of-use tap water filters.

BACKGROUND: Point-of-use filters are installed at tap/shower outlets in hospitals in response to either water-related outbreaks/incidents where water-borne pathogens (e.g. Pseudomonas aeruginosa) have been isolated in a patient or in the water supply, or as a prophylactic measure in areas of high risk where immunocompromised patients are being treated (e.g. intensive care or neonatal units). METHODS: This narrative review considers the evidence base for external cleaning of the body of these filters, and utilizes a unique approach by combining grounded theory with standard narrative review te…

Becoming the temporary surgeon: A grounded theory examination of anaesthetists performing emergency front of neck access in inter-disciplinary simulation-based training.

The time-critical 'can't intubate, can't oxygenate' [CICO] emergency post-induction of anaesthesia is rare, but one which, should it occur, requires Anaesthetists to perform rapid emergency front of neck access [FONA] to the trachea, restoring oxygenation, and preventing death or brain hypoxia. The UK Difficult Airway Society [DAS] has directed all Anaesthetists to be trained with surgical cricothyroidotomy [SCT] as the primary emergency FONA method, sometimes referred to as 'Cric' as a shorthand. We present a longitudinal analysis using a classical approach to Grounded Theory methodology of t…

The role of felt or enacted criticism in understanding parent's help seeking in acute childhood illness at home: a grounded theory study.

BACKGROUND: Parents with young children often worry about whether or not to seek medical help for a sick child. Previous research identified parents' anxieties surrounding help seeking from health services but did not explore or explain the underlying psychosocial processes taking place in families at these times. OBJECTIVES: This paper presents findings from a British grounded theory study on family management of acute childhood illness at home, which provide an explanation for parent's helping seeking behaviours. DESIGN: Glaserian grounded theory methodology was used for the study. SETTIN…

Contextual conditions shaping the upward referral of obstetric emergencies from community health centres in the Eastern Cape: a Straussian Grounded Theory study.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal mortality remains a significant public health concern in South Africa, particularly in resource limited settings where timely access to higher-level care is vital. Community Health Centres are the first point of contact for women faced with obstetric emergencies, yet systemic, contextual, and operational challenges impede effective upward referral. Guided by Straussian Grounded Theory, this qualitative study explored the contextual conditions shaping the upward referral of obstetric emergencies in the OR Tambo district, Eastern Cape. METHODS: Data was collected through …

This research explored how women perceived the approach adopted by healthcare workers when the news of their stillbirth was disclosed to them. METHODS: Grounded theory study. Women (n = 33) who had birthed a still…

Transcendental phenomenology and classic grounded theory as mixed data collection methods in a study exploring fetal alcohol spectrum disorder in New Zealand.

BACKGROUND: Despite the risk of 'method slurring', researchers have triangulated within a single qualitative study methods that are philosophically incongruent or in a limited context, are congruent, as with hermeneutic phenomenology and constructivist grounded theory. METHODS/MATERIALS: We aimed to make the case that what works best can be to mix two qualitative methods that are philosophically congruent. Thus, we used transcendental phenomenology (TP) and classic grounded theory (CGT) in synergetic sequence to answer our research question. These methods have not previously been used togethe…
