Sleep-disordered breathing symptoms frequency and growth among prematurely born infants.

BACKGROUND: Children who were born prematurely are at higher risk for sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) compared to their same-age peers who were born fullterm. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the present study was to assess the frequency of SDB symptoms and effects on growth among preterm infants while they are still infants, with a goal of identifying risk factors to facilitate prevention and early intervention. METHODS: The Louisville pediatric SDB risk survey was administered to the primary caretakers of prematurely born infants attending the Neonatal Follow-Up Clinic at West Virginia Univers

[The influence of sleep breathing disorder on growth hormone secretion in children with tonsil hypertrophy].

INTRODUCTION: Recently it has been revealed that Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome has an influence on the endocrine system, especially to the secretion of growth hormone (GH). It was previously reported that secretion of GH has a circadian rhythm along with a correlation with slow wave sleep. Normally in a pediatric patient, after 90 min of sleep the brain wave shows patterns of deep sleep, and a matching peak in GH secretion is observed. We have studied the effect of GH secretion in sleep breathing disorder of pediatric patients by observing the pre- and post-operative difference in GH secret

Trichomegaly, pigmentary degeneration of the retina and growth disturbances. A probable autosomal recessive disorder.

Two brothers are described with trichomegaly, early pigmentary degeneration of the retina, growth retardation, anterior pituitary deficiencies and peripheral neuropathy. This syndrome, initially reported in a boy by Olivers and Mac Farlane in 1965 (6), and thereafter in six sporadic cases of both sexes, is not associated with a recognizable chromosomal defect. The present report of two brothers of healthy parents with negative familial history suggests an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance of this entity.

Familial focal alopecia. A new disorder of hair growth clinically resembling pseudopelade.

A 14-year-old girl was evaluated for patchy hair loss present from early childhood. Her mother was found to have a similar condition. When studied in transverse section, biopsy specimens from both women showed marked anagen-telogen transformation that circumstantially appears to be irreversible. Preservation of telogen epithelium with absence of inflammation and scarring readily separate focal familial alopecia from the pseudopelade state and from localized alopecia areata. To our knowledge, this is the first description of a new familial disorder causing focal alopecia.

From challenge to growth: A qualitative study of parental adaptation to Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Raising a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) profoundly affects family dynamics and parental well-being. While research has often focused on stress and negative outcomes, less is known about the processes and resources that foster adaptation and growth in parents. This qualitative study explored the adaptation process among parents of children with ASD, examining both challenges and transformative experiences, and identifying key personal and contextual factors that support or hinder adjustment. Thirty-six parents (19 mothers, 17 fathers) of children aged 5-11 years with ASD (severity l

Positive parenting and posttraumatic growth in mothers of children with autism spectrum disorder in Türkiye.

INTRODUCTION: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) places a lifelong caregiving burden on families, especially mothers, who may also experience positive psychological changes such as posttraumatic growth (PTG). Understanding how family characteristics and autism severity influence parenting is essential for effective psychosocial support. The aim of this study is to examine the parental behaviors and posttraumatic growth levels among mothers of children diagnosed with ASD and to explore predictors of positive parenting. METHODS: This descriptive study included 112 mothers of children with ASD attend

Advances in the application of bone turnover markers for pediatric growth and developmental disorders: a review.

Bone turnover markers (BTMs) are biomedical indicators used to assess the bone metabolism processes reflecting the activity of osteoblasts and osteoclasts. During childhood and adolescence, bone metabolism is highly active, leading to distinct levels and trends of BTMs compared with those of adults. BTMs correlate significantly with age, gender and environmental factors, making them valuable for evaluating bone health and developmental trajectories in pediatric populations. Due to the non-invasive characters and dynamic monitoring capabilities, BTMs are increasingly employed in research and cl

Applicability of the Hebrew Bible to Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and Post-traumatic Growth.

Since the new millennium, biblical scholars have begun to reread certain writings in the Hebrew Bible through the concepts of post-traumatic stress disorder and post-traumatic growth. Some scholars believe such a reading is legitimate, whereas others think it problematic, and still, others hold a midway perspective. This article argues for the midway, the position that accepts the applicability of the Hebrew Bible to today's psychological concepts but calls for caution. Because ancient Israelites reacted to traumatic events and distinguished the human mind from the body like modern people, it

The Role of Placental Growth Factor in the Prediction of Carbohydrate and Thyroid Disorders during Pregnancy.

Background and objectives: To assess whether placental growth factor (PlGF) levels may have a predictive value for the onset of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and thyroid dysfunction during pregnancy. Materials and Methods: This single-center retrospective analysis was conducted at the Specialized Hospital for Active Treatment in Obstetrics and Gynecology "Dr. Shterev", Sofia, Bulgaria, from December 2017 to December 2019. Using pregnant women's electronic records, we analyzed and compared the data of 412 women diagnosed with GDM and 250 women without evidence for carbohydrate disorders.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Post-Traumatic Growth following Kidney Transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Kidney transplantation (KT) is a life-saving therapy for kidney failure. However, KT recipients can suffer from debilitating depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and suicide. In contrast to PTSD, post-traumatic growth (PTG) is a positive psychologic change in response to a challenging situation. PTG has been studied in other chronic diseases, but less is known about its role in the setting of KT. We sought to elucidate the prevalence, predictors, and the effect of PTSD and PTG on post-KT outcomes. We also considered the roles of benefit finding and resilience. METHOD

The Potential Role of Hepatocyte Growth Factor in Degenerative Disorders of the Synovial Joint and Spine.

This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of the changing role of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) signaling in the healthy and diseased synovial joint and spine. HGF is a multifunctional growth factor that, like its specific receptor c-Met, is widely expressed in several bone and joint tissues. HGF has profound effects on cell survival and proliferation, matrix metabolism, inflammatory response, and neurotrophic action. HGF plays an important role in normal bone and cartilage turnover. Changes in HGF/c-Met have also been linked to pathophysiological changes in degenerative joint disease

The clinical and mechanistic intersection of primary atopic disorders and inborn errors of growth and metabolism.

Dynamic changes in metabolism have long been understood as critical for both the initiation and maintenance of innate and adaptive immune responses. A number of recent advances have clarified details of how metabolic pathways can specifically affect cellular function in immune cells. Critical to this understanding is ongoing study of the congenital disorders of glycosylation and other genetic disorders of metabolism that lead to altered immune function in humans. While there are a number of immune phenotypes associated with metabolic derangements caused by single gene disorders, several geneti

Is insulin growth factor-1 the future for treating autism spectrum disorder and/or schizophrenia?

To date, no curative psychopharmacologic treatment exists for the core symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as well as for schizophrenia. Bumatenide is a specific antagonist of the first isoform of the Na-K-Cl cotransporter (NKCC1). It is usually used as a diuretic but may also promote a decrease in intraneuronal chloride ion concentration leading to hyperpolarization in neuronal membrane and subsequent decrease in neuronal hyperexcitability. This physiologic effect has been considered to be behind the relative efficacy of bumetanide in improving symptoms of ASD and, to a lesser extent,

Growth in spending on substance use disorder treatment services for the privately insured population.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 8% of individuals with private health insurance in the United States have substance use disorders (SUDs), but in 2009 only 0.4% of all private insurance spending was on SUDs. The objective of this study was to determine if changes that occurred between 2009 and 2012 - such as more generous SUD benefits, an epidemic of opioid use disorders, and slow recovery from a recession - were associated with greater use of SUD treatment. METHODS: Data were from the 2004-2012 Truven Health Analytics MarketScan(®) Commercial Claims and Encounters Database. This database is represe

Spatially-dense 3D facial asymmetry assessment in both typical and disordered growth.

Mild facial asymmetries are common in typical growth patterns. Therefore, detection of disordered facial growth patterns in individuals characterized by asymmetries is preferably accomplished by reference to the typical variation found in the general population rather than to some ideal of perfect symmetry, which rarely exists. This presents a challenge in developing an asymmetry assessment tool that is applicable, without modification, to detect both mild and severe facial asymmetries. In this paper we use concepts from geometric morphometrics to obtain robust and spatially-dense asymmetry as

Posttraumatic growth, posttraumatic stress disorder and resilience of motor vehicle accident survivors.

BACKGROUND: Although some previous studies have suggested that posttraumatic growth (PTG) is comprised of several factors with different properties, few have examined both the association between PTG and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and between PTG and resilience, focusing on each of the factors of PTG. This study aimed to examine the hypothesis that some factors of PTG, such as personal strength, relate to resilience, whereas other factors, such as appreciation of life, relate to PTSD symptoms among Japanese motor vehicle accident (MVA) survivors. METHODS: This cross-sectional study

[Etiology of intrauterine growth retardation. Part I: placental-fetal interrelationship disorder].

Intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) increases a risk of perinatal complications and may carry a negative influence on a later baby's mental and physical development. Poorer function revealed by many vital organs seems to be the effect of their lower mass and their relative immaturity. In the first part of a paper the authors discuss two groups of factors thought to be responsible for IUGR. The first one has been related to the fetal status-genetic anomalies, other primary developmental defects and different growth patterns.
