Female guinea pigs were experimentally infected in the genital tract with the strain of Chlamydia psittaci that causes guinea pig inclusion conjunctivitis. Chlamydiae were found frequently in superficial squamous epithelial cells of the exocervix, along with heavy involvement at the squamocolumnar junction. Reproductive pathology of domestic guinea pigs is underreported to date. To provide a comprehensive review of uterine disease in guinea pigs, we performed a retrospective study of the pathology archives of the University of Tennessee, College of Veterinary Medicine. By histology, 13 of 37 uterine lesions in 23 animals were neoplastic; the other 24 nonneoplastic lesions included cystic endometrial hyperplasia (16 of 24), endometrial hemorrhage (3 of 24), pyometra (2 of 24), polyp (2 of 24), and mucometra (1 of 24). BACKGROUND: Cholera is newly emergent in Papua New Guinea but may soon become endemic. Identifying the risk factors for cholera provides evidence for targeted prevention and control measures.
METHODS: We conducted a hospital-based case-control study to identify cholera risk factors. Using stool culture as the standard, we evaluated a cholera point of care test in the field.

We developed a guinea pig model of cryptococcal meningitis to evaluate antifungal agents. Immunosuppressed animals challenged intracranially with Cryptococcus neoformans responded to fluconazole and voriconazole. Disease was monitored by serial cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) cultures and quantitative organ cultures. Our model produces disseminating central nervous system disease and responds to antifungal therapy.

Outer hair cell (OHC) electromotility provides mechanical positive feedback that functions as the cochlear amplifier. In isolated OHCs, chlorpromazine shifts the electromotility voltage-displacement transfer function in a depolarizing direction without affecting its magnitude. A study of Burkitt's lymphoma (BL) in Papua New Guinea for the years 1958-87 revealed four instances of familial BL. Incident cases occurred within 1 year of each other in the four families. Personal follow-up was possible for three of these families whose pedigrees showed that two or more siblings were affected. There was no significant variation of the incidence of BL by year of diagnosis or month of onset. A guinea pig model of viral labyrinthitis was established by inoculating guinea pig cytomegalovirus into the inner ear and then determine its effect on vestibular function. Neither spontaneous nor positional nystagmus could be detected postoperatively. Nine out of 18 (50%) animals had caloric hyperfunction in the virus-inoculated ear at 1 to 3 weeks postoperatively. Five of these 9 animals also had caloric hyperfunction in the control ear. Unilateral torsion of the spermatic cord was surgically induced in 24 Hartley strain guinea pigs. An assay for testing the binding of haptens to antigen-presenting cells was developed. The test consists of consecutive incubation of macrophages with the tested hapten, followed by incubation with a radioactively labeled standard. If the first hapten occupies a certain number of binding sites, the other one (radioactively labeled standard) reveals reduced binding.
