The aim of this work was to develop a spectrophotometric method for the measurement of salivary β-galactosidase for the evaluation of oral malodor. A comparison between different methods for estimating oral malodor has been conducted on 94 healthy adult volunteers. For organoleptic measurements, the subjects were instructed to exhale briefly through the mouth at a distance of approximately 10 cm from the noses of two trained judges. The evaluation of β-galactosidase activity was accomplished in unstimulated whole saliva of all participants through the colorimetric method and spectrophotometry.

INTRODUCTION: Bad breath is a disease affecting 25% of the world's population. Despite the widespread nature of this problem, people's knowledge about this condition is poor.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of halitosis in a cohort of 62 Senegalese subjects with dental prostheses.
METHODS: Breath analysis was based on measurement of volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) using a halimeter. Halitosis was diagnosed ifVSC level was > or = 125 ppb.
RESULTS: Mean VSC level was 157.7 +/- 152.6 ppb. The prevalence of halitosis was of 35.4% overall, 72.7% in persons wi…

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether there is a correlation between halitosis and mouth breathing in children.
STUDY DESIGN: Fifty-five children between 3 and 14 years of age were divided into two groups (nasal and mouth breathing) for the assessment of halitosis. A descriptive analysis was conducted on the degree of halitosis in each group. The chi-square test was used for comparison between groups, with a 5% level of significance.
RESULTS: There was a significantly greater number of boys with the mouth-breathing pattern than girls. A total of 23.6% of the participants had no mouth odor, 12.7% h…

BACKGROUND: Halitosis can have an intra- or extra-oral origin. In all cases, bad breath is caused by the presence of volatile organic compounds originating from the mouth or the expired air. They can be specific for certain diseases or infections.
STUDY OBJECTIVE: This study explored the presence and concentration of these volatile compounds normally associated with halitosis in the breath of healthy symptomless volunteers.
METHODS: Alveolar and mouth air of 40 healthy volunteers as well as environmental air were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and by a commercially …

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of CO(2) laser cryptolysis by coagulation (LCC) treatment in the volatile sulphur compounds (VSC) halitometry in patients with chronic caseous tonsillitis (CCT).
BACKGROUND DATA: Caseum retention and halitosis characterize CCT. Failure of clinical treatment indicated tonsillectomy. Recently, a conservative new treatment, CO(2 )LCC, has been introduced. It is painless and opens the crypt ostium, thus avoiding caseum retention. Halitometry is an objective new method for halitosis diagnosis. It measures VSC in parts per billion (ppb) in…

Methyl mercaptan (MM) is known as one of the major chemicals of halitosis (bad breath). In this study, a bioelectronic gas sensor (bio-detector) for gaseous MM was developed and was applied to measure halitosis in breath. The bio-detector consisted of a Clark-type dissolved oxygen electrode, a monoamine oxidase type-A (MAO-A) immobilized membrane and a reaction unit that had liquid and gaseous compartments separated by a hydrophobic porous polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) diaphragm membrane. The tip of the electrode covered with MAO-A membrane was placed into the liquid compartment as touching t…

Dental practitioners have traditionally neglected halitosis despite its high priority for the public, but practitioners' interest in halitosis has recently increased. Although oral pathologic or physiologic halitosis is easily reduced by a suitable treatment based on the treatment needs, systemic and psychological conditions sometimes confuse practitioners. Since a halitophobic patient never agrees with the result that his/her oral malodour has been reduced or eliminated after treatment, this may cause a dilemma for practitioners. Generally, halitosis patients, even genuine ones, have differen…

To treat halitosis, clinicians must examine the psychologic condition of a patient as well as the disease history and plausible causes of oral malodor, such as periodontal disease. However, it is not easy for a practitioner to carry out a psychologic examination other than the normal inquiry concerning oral malodor itself. Hence, a questionnaire that appears to be a normal inquiry, rather than one containing psychologic questions, was composed to survey the causes of halitosis and psychosomatic tendencies.

Halitosis, a condition that causes a severe social handicap to those who suffer from it, has a multifactorial etiology. Since patients with this condition seek professional consultation from dentists much more frequently than from physicians, dentists, who treat diseases of the oral cavity, should have an understanding of the local as well as the systemic factors which cause halitosis. This article presents an extensive review of the information available, with an etiologic classification of this condition to help clinicians develop the diagnostic acumen to distinguish one type of halitosis fr…

Halitosis in older adults is a common condition that may have oral or nonoral sources, result from a number of different etiologies, and have more than just social consequences. In some cases, bad breath may reflect serious local or systemic conditions, including gingivitis, periodontal disease, diabetic acidosis, hepatic failure, or respiratory infection. Your role as the primary care physician is first to determine whether the odor has an oral or nonoral cause. Odors can be distinct in their quality and thus can help make this determination. Management of nonoral sources requires treatment o…
