Population Genomic Screening for Genetic Etiologies of Neurodevelopmental/Psychiatric Disorders Demonstrates Personal Utility and Positive Participant Responses.

Genomic variants that cause neurodevelopmental/psychiatric disorders (NPD) are relatively prevalent and highly penetrant. This study aimed to understand adults' immediate responses to receiving NPD-related results to inform inclusion in population-based genomic screening programs. Nine recurrent, pathogenic copy number variants (CNVs) were identified from research exome data, clinically confirmed, and disclosed to adult participants of the Geisinger MyCode Community Health Initiative DiscovEHR cohort by experienced genetic counselors. A subset of in-person genetic counseling sessions (n = 27)

Collection of cancer Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMS) to link with primary and secondary electronic care records to understand and improve long term cancer outcomes: A protocol paper.

INTRODUCTION: More people are living with and beyond a cancer diagnosis. There is limited understanding of the long-term effects of cancer and cancer treatment on quality of life and personal and household finances when compared to people without cancer. In a separate protocol we have proposed to link de-identified data from electronic primary care and hospital records for a large population of cancer survivors and matched controls. In this current protocol, we propose the linkage of Patient Reported Outcomes Measures data to the above data for a subset of this population. The aim of this stud

The commonest rheumatic complaints of over six weeks' duration in a twelve-month period in a defined Swedish population. Prevalences and relationships.

In 900 randomly selected individuals, 50-70 years old, we examined the prevalence over the preceding 12-month period of rheumatic complaints of more than 6 weeks' duration. We found them to represent a major health problem, with an overall prevalence of 37.8%, the predominant diagnoses being subacromial shoulder pain (6.7%), neck pain (6.5%), low back pain (6.3%), osteo-arthrosis (8.5%), and arthralgia (4.9%). With a prevalence of 1.0%, primary fibromyalgia was as common as rheumatoid arthritis (0.7%) and other chronic arthritides (1.1%). The prevalences of the different diagnoses were higher

The patient record and the rise of the pediatric EHR.

Medical documentation arose as individual case reports written for teaching purposes. Documentation for patient care later occurred in physicians' personal daybooks and only evolved into the individual patient record in the early 20th century. Dr. Lawrence Weed improved the utility of the patient record by introducing a problem-oriented/subject-object-assessment-plan structure and he and other innovators transformed the patient record into electronic form. Pediatricians built on these innovations to create a child health electronic health record (EHR) for primary care. An American Academy of P

Interventions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from health-system solid waste: a systematic review.

When considering the entire lifecycle of products, including manufacturing, distribution, use, and end-of-life disposal, health-system solid waste contributes substantially to health-system greenhouse gas emissions, making the issue an important target for sustainability and decarbonisation action. In this systematic review, we examined sustainability principles and interventions that have been implemented in Australia and other high-income countries to reduce the greenhouse gas emission footprint of solid waste in the health-care and aged-care sectors, considering the waste hierarchy for the

Thyroid doses for the Chornobyl Tissue Bank: improved estimates based on revised methodology and individual residence and diet history.

Increased thyroid cancer incidence has been one of the principal adverse health effects of the Chornobyl (Chernobyl) nuclear power plant accident. Accurate dose estimation is critical for assessing the radiation dose-response relationship. Current dosimetry estimates for individuals from the Chornobyl Tissue Bank (CTB) are based only on the limited information on their places of residence at the time of the accident and/or at the time of surgery for thyroid cancer. The present study aimed to assess whether additional residential and dietary history data collected during personal interviews wou

Construction of a comprehensive fetal monitoring database for the study of perinatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy.

This article describes the methods used to build a large-scale database of more than 250,000 electronic fetal monitoring (EFM) records linked to a comprehensive set of clinical information about the infant, the mother, the pregnancy, labor, and outcome. The database can be used to investigate how birth outcome is related to clinical and EFM features. The main steps involved in building the database were: (1) Acquiring the raw EFM recording and clinical records for each birth. (2) Assigning each birth to an objectively defined outcome class that included normal, acidosis, and hypoxic-ischemic e
