Social factors associated with the development of e-health literacy: A mixed-methods study among patient organization members and representatives.

The increasing digitalization of healthcare systems presents both opportunities and challenges for patients. A key challenge lies in cultivating e-health literacy, defined as the capacity to locate, comprehend, appraise, and use digital health information and services. This study employs a mixed-methods approach to investigate social and structural factors perceived as shaping patients' capability to use digital health services. A mixed-method approach guided the design, data collection, data analysis, and synthesis. This included semi-structured interviews and an online survey to corroborate

Innovation During COVID-19: Improving Addiction Treatment Access.

: During the COVID-19 pandemic, many addiction treatment and harm reduction organizations have had to reduce their hours and services for people with substance use disorders, placing these individuals at increased risk of death. In order to address restricted treatment access during COVID-19, guidance from the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration, the US Drug Enforcement Administration, and the US Department of Health and Human Services has allowed for use of audio-only telehealth encounters for buprenorphine induction without requiring an in-person evaluation or video interfa…

Family planning services for incarcerated women: models for filling an unmet need.

Purpose Incarcerated women around the globe are predominantly of reproductive age. Most of these women have been pregnant before, and many want to be sexually active and avoid pregnancy upon release. Yet few of these women are on a regular method of contraception. Providing contraceptive services for women in custody benefits individual and public health goals of reducing unintended pregnancy. This policy briefing reviews evidence for an unmet need for family planning in the correctional setting, and policy implications for expanding services. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/met

Predictors of behavioural health service use and associated expenditures: Individuals with TBI in Pinellas County.

OBJECTIVE: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major public health concern. Such injuries often result in dramatic changes in the individual's life-course due to the associated complex co-morbidities. Limited research exists on the use and expenditures incurred for behavioural healthcare services post-TBI. This study examined predictors of behavioural service use, incarceration and associated expenditures for individuals with TBI. METHODS: Emergency Medical Services and Medicaid Claims data were used to identify individuals diagnosed with a TBI in Pinellas County, Florida, in FY 2005. Ten state

Primary care in Cuba: a public health approach.

Cuba's primary health care model is presented. Unlike ambulatory care services, which are but one component of primary care, Cuba's model is a comprehensive public health approach that meets the World Health Organization's definition of primary care. The history of the development of Cuba's model is presented, including an update on the innovative neighborhood/home clinics. Achievements in health outcomes as a result of Cuba's model and the consequences for women's health care are discussed. Examples are presented of the effects on health care delivery of the economic hardship that Cuba has ex

Hybrid prevalence estimation: Method to improve intervention coverage estimations.

Delivering excellent health services requires accurate health information systems (HIS) data. Poor-quality data can lead to poor judgments and outcomes. Unlike probability surveys, which are representative of the population and carry accuracy estimates, HIS do not, but in many countries the HIS is the primary source of data used for administrative estimates. However, HIS are not structured to detect gaps in service coverage and leave communities exposed to unnecessary health risks. Here we propose a method to improve informatics by combining HIS and probability survey data to construct a hybri

Healthcare utilization of individuals with opiate use disorders: an analysis of integrated medicaid and state mental health/substance abuse agency data.

Data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's Integrated Database (IDB) were used to examine the service use patterns of individuals with possible opiate use disorders in Washington State. Results indicate that regardless of Medicaid enrollment status, individuals who received mental health (MH) or substance abuse (SA) services only through state agencies received no inpatient substance abuse service. Furthermore, when compared with individuals who received at least one MH/SA service through Medicaid, those who received services only through the state agencies were …

POPs less widely used.

Progestin-only pills (POPs) are less widely used and available than combined pills. For example, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) shipped only 3 million packets of POPs worldwide in 1994, compared with 62 million packets of combined pills, according to Mark Rilling, program analyst with USAID's Office of Population. While USAID considers POPs to be an acceptable contraceptive option for some women and intends to continue providing them, the worldwide market for them is small, Rilling says. The London-based International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) reports a simila

European network for promoting the physical health of residents in psychiatric and social care facilities (HELPS): background, aims and methods.

BACKGROUND: People with mental disorders have a higher prevalence of physical illnesses and reduced life expectancy as compared with the general population. However, there is a lack of knowledge across Europe concerning interventions that aim at reducing somatic morbidity and excess mortality by promoting behaviour-based and/or environment-based interventions. METHODS AND DESIGN: HELPS is an interdisciplinary European network that aims at (i) gathering relevant knowledge on physical illness in people with mental illness, (ii) identifying health promotion initiatives in European countries that

Pre-hospital aspirin for suspected myocardial infarction and acute coronary syndromes: a headache for paramedics?

OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the frequency with which paramedics follow protocols for the administration of aspirin to patients to whom an ambulance is called for chest pain associated with suspected ischaemic heart disease. METHODS: Ambulance services in England and Wales who had conducted a recent aspirin administration audit were identified through the National Clinical Effectiveness Programme for the Ambulance Service Association. Data were requested from each of these services with a 100% return rate. RESULTS: Nine services out of a total of 35 had collected appropriate data. The proportion

An Investigation of the Factors Reducing the Use of Hospital Services: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hospital service utilization has declined in many health systems due to policy shifts, limited resources, and alternative care approaches. This study aimed to systematically review the factors contributing to a reduction in the use or volume of hospital services. METHODS: In this systematic review, articles published from 2018 to 2023 were reviewed by searching relevant keywords based on the PRISMA guidelines. The systematic search was conducted using English-language texts related to the research question, "What are the factors reducing hospital services?" and electronic

A team approach to prevocational services.

This paper presents a chronology of legislative mandates for vocational rehabilitation, discusses their impact on occupational therapy, and describes relationships between special educators and vocational agencies. The Career Training Workshop, a prevocational program developed and used successfully by a North Carolina school district, is described here as an example of one effort to prepare students with disabilities for employment.

Risk factors for becoming homeless among a cohort of veterans who served in the era of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts.

OBJECTIVES: In this population-based cohort study, we assessed baseline risk factors for homelessness, including the role of service in the Iraq or Afghanistan conflicts, among a large cohort of recent veterans. METHODS: Data for this study came from administrative records for 310,685 veterans who separated from active military duty from July 1, 2005, to September 30, 2006. We used survival analysis methods to determine incidence rates and risk factors for homelessness, based on baseline data for military factors, demographic characteristics, and diagnoses of behavioral health disorders and t
