We have studied the hearts from a colony of Yucatan miniature pigs with spontaneously occurring congenital defects. Ventricular septal defect was encountered in 57 of 81 neonates from 15 consecutive litters. Of 73 hearts preserved for morphological assessment, 52 were found to have defects within the ventricular septum remarkably similar to those observed in humans with deficient ventricular septum. The defects, including 3 which had closed spontaneously, were perimembranous in 34, muscular in 12 and doubly committed and juxtaarterial in 6 hearts. Atrial septal defects were found in 12 of the

Atrial septal defect is one of the most common forms of congenital heart malformation. We identified a new locus linked with atrial septal defect on chromosome 14q12 in a large family with dominantly inherited atrial septal defect. The underlying mutation is a missense substitution, I820N, in alpha-myosin heavy chain (MYH6), a structural protein expressed at high levels in the developing atria, which affects the binding of the heavy chain to its regulatory light chain. The cardiac transcription factor TBX5 strongly regulates expression of MYH6, but mutant forms of TBX5, which cause Holt-Oram s

Methamphetamine abuse is an increasingly prevalent cause of pulmonary artery hypertension in the United States. Conversely, an atrial septal defect rarely presents late as pulmonary artery hypertension. We present the case of a 44-year-old methamphetamine abuser who had a 3-month history of worsening fatigue and near-syncope. She had elevated cardiac enzyme levels and right-sided heart strain. Angiographic findings suggested methamphetamine-induced pulmonary artery hypertension; however, we later heard S2 irregularities that raised suspicion of an atrial septal defect. Ultimately, the diagnosi

A 3-month-old female with ventricular septal defect underwent definitive repair. In the operation, a venting tube was inserted through the incised patent foramen ovale. The ventricular septal defect was closed using a patch and the incised patent foramen ovale was directly closed. A transesophageal echography showed no abnormal findings in the operating room. On 1st postoperative day, the patient's heart rate and pressure of the superior vena cava increased while blood pressure decreased. A transthoracic echocardiography revealed an atrial septal hematoma. After conservative therapy, the heart

The author describes the simultaneous treatment of pectus excavatum and congenital intracardiac defect (atrial septal defect) represented by the interatrial foramen secundum. An 8-year-old boy, with clinical and echocardiography diagnosis of atrial septal defect associated with pectus excavatum was referred to a simultaneous surgical treatment of both abnormalities. The simultaneous surgical treatment of both pectus excavatum and congenital intracardiac defects make it difficult to access the heart. In this case, the simultaneous surgical treatment of atrial septal defect and pectus excavatum

Four patients with atrial septal defects and congestive heart failure in the first year of life had none of the classic auscultatory findings of atrial septal defect. Three of four had murmurs suggestive of innocent pulmonary-artery branch stenosis.

A 45-days-old mixed-breed female cat was referred to a veterinary specialty hospital for evaluation due to poor general condition, dyspnea of possible cardiac origin, and a heart murmur. The results of the physical examination, thoracic radiography, and echocardiography led to a diagnosis of hypotrophy of the right ventricle, tricuspid atresia, and atrial septal defect. Cardiovascular pathological findings confirmed the clinical diagnosis in addition to the observation of a ventricular septal defect. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of tricuspid atresia with atrial septal de

BACKGROUND: Sinus venosus atrial septal defects with partial anomalous pulmonary venous return (PAPVR) are rare congenital abnormalities.
CASE SUMMARY: A 26-year-old competitive swimmer with Klinefelter syndrome was referred for evaluation after echocardiography revealed right-sided chamber dilation. Multimodality imaging confirmed sinus venosus atrial septal defects with PAPVR of the right upper and middle pulmonary veins draining into the superior vena cava (pulmonary/systemic flow ratio = 1.8). He underwent successful pericardial-patch closure and venous baffling to the left atrium. At 1 y

OBJECTIVES: This study attempted to determine the site, relative size and dynamic geometry of atrial septal defects using dynamic three-dimensional echocardiography.
BACKGROUND: Recent studies have demonstrated the feasibility of dynamic three-dimensional echocardiography. Images are acquired from computerized reconstruction of sequential, tomographic ultrasound "slices" of the heart. Ultrasound images can be obtained by linear progression of a transducer within a transesophageal imaging probe. In small infants and children the large transducer size has not allowed transesophageal placement,

OBJECTIVES: The surgical feasibility of beating-heart atrial septectomy under the guidance of two different types of real-time 3-dimensional echocardiography systems was examined.
METHODS: A modified real-time 3-dimensional echocardiography system with a x4 matrix transducer (Sonos 7500; Philips Medical Systems, Andover, Mass) or a mechanical 1-dimensional array transducer (SSD-5500; Aloka Co, Ltd, Tokyo, Japan) was used. Small porcine atrial septal defects (n = 8) were enlarged with a Kerrison bone punch in the tank model. In the animal studies, small atrial septal defects (n = 8) were enlar

The impact of an atrial septal defect in the elderly with reduced diastolic elasticity of the left ventricle is unclear. We studied the hemodynamic changes during balloon occlusion of atrial septal defects in patients over 60 years of age. In 18 patients (61-78 years old; median, 70), the left atrial pressure and the mitral valve inflow was measured during complete balloon occlusion of the defect and after deflation of the balloon. In seven patients, the left atrial pressure and the E/A ratio of the mitral valve inflow increased markedly (P = 0.02). Mean atrial pressures reached values of 27 m

Left-to-right shunts represent a significant portion of congenital heart disease. Such lesions are common in isolation, but are frequently seen in conjunction with other, often more complex, congenital heart disease. This review covers basic anatomy, physiology, physical examination findings, diagnosis and management for atrial septal defects, ventricular septal defects, and patent ductus arteriosa.

BACKGROUND: Cleft in the mitral valve leaflet is a primary cause of congenital mitral regurgitation, stemming from developmental anomalies in the mitral valve and frequently associated with other congenital heart defects. Concurrent presence of cleft in mitral valve leaflet with atrial septal defect and ventricular septal defect is relatively rare. Echocardiography, especially transesophageal echocardiography, is essential in diagnosing cleft mitral valve leaflet and related congenital heart defects, providing critical, detailed imagery for accurate assessment. This study presents a young fema

Catheter occlusion of atrial septal defects has its roots in the 1950s, with early devices being implanted during closed-heart surgery without cardiopulmonary bypass. For the past 20 years, various catheter-delivered devices have undergone testing and refinement. Designs have included single- and double-disk prostheses, with a variety of materials, delivery systems, and techniques. In this monograph, the history of atrial septal defect occluders and their evaluation, results, and prognoses will be outlined. The early work of King and Mills has been advanced in the forms of the Rashkind and Loc

Advances in fetal echocardiography enable the prenatal diagnosis of a vast majority of congenital heart defects. On the other hand, ostium secundum atrial septal defect is difficult to diagnose in the fetus. Although a defect of minor clinical significance, this may be the only intrauterine finding of a chromosomal anomaly. We documented an abnormal oscillatory pattern of the foramen ovale flap motion by M-mode fetal echocardiography in 2 fetuses with ostium secundum atrial septal defect. This may be a more consistent finding for the prenatal diagnosis of ostium secundum atrial septal defect t

INTRODUCTION: Secundum atrial septal defect is one of the most common congenital heart defects. Previous paediatric studies have mainly addressed echocardiographic and few clinical factors among children associated with adverse events. The aim of this study was to identify neonatal and other clinical risk factors associated with adverse events up to one year after closure of atrial septal defect.
METHODS: This retrospective case-control study includes children born in Sweden between 2000 and 2014 that were treated surgically or percutaneously for an atrial septal defect. Conditional logistic

Primary heart tumors are rare, with atrial myxomas being the most common type. Atrial myxomas can lead to embolisms, heart obstruction, and systemic symptoms. Herein, we report a case of 72-year-old woman who presented with a left atrial myxoma at the atrial septal defect occluder, a new acute cerebral infarction, and MINOCA (myocardial infarction with no obstructive coronary atherosclerosis). Left atrial myxoma is a common primary cardiac tumor; however, left atrial myxomas arising after percutaneous atrial septal defect occlusion are rare. Additionally, the patient presented with a new case
