The therapeutic effects of heat have been harnessed for centuries to treat skeletal muscle disorders and other pathologies. However, the fundamental mechanisms underlying the well-documented clinical benefits associated with heat therapy (HT) remain poorly defined. Foundational studies in cultured skeletal muscle and endothelial cells, as well as in rodents, revealed that episodic exposure to heat stress activates a number of intracellular signaling networks and promotes skeletal muscle remodeling. Renewed interest in the physiology of HT in recent years has provided greater understanding of t

The physiological consequences of environment-induced heat stress (EIHS), caused by prolonged exposure to excess heat and humidity, are largely unknown. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the extent to which EIHS alters cardiac health. We hypothesized that 24 h of EIHS would cause cardiac injury and cellular dysfunction in a murine EIHS model. To test this hypothesis, 7-wk-old female mice were housed under thermoneutral (TN) conditions (n = 12; 31.2 ± 1.01°C, 35 ± 0.7% humidity) or EIHS conditions (n = 14; 37.6 ± 0.01°C, 42.0 ± 0.06% humidity) for 24 h. Environment-induced heat

C-terminus of HSC70-interacting protein (CHIP) encoded by the gene STUB1 is a co-chaperone and E3 ligase that acts as a key regulator of cellular protein homeostasis. Mutations in STUB1 cause autosomal recessive spinocerebellar ataxia type 16 (SCAR16) with widespread neurodegeneration manifesting as spastic-ataxic gait disorder, dementia and epilepsy. CHIP-/- mice display severe cerebellar atrophy, show high perinatal lethality and impaired heat stress tolerance. To decipher the pathomechanism underlying SCAR16, we investigated the heat shock response (HSR) in primary fibroblasts of three SCAR

Japan is reported to have the world's highest per-capita drowning mortality among older adults, and most deaths occur in bathtubs, suggesting that Japan-specific bathing practices contribute to this occurrence. Because fatal bath-related accidents increase during the cold seasons and physiological studies simulating bathing have documented marked blood pressure fluctuations, prevention efforts have traditionally focused on preventing rapid blood pressure changes induced by indoor temperature gradients-the so-called "heat shock." However, it has been reported that cases involving organic diseas

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are creating unprecedented climate-driven extreme weather, with levels of heat and humidity surpassing human physiological tolerance for heat stress. These conditions create a risk of mass casualties, with some populations particularly vulnerable due to physiological, behavioural and socioeconomic conditions (eg, lack of adequate shelter, limited healthcare infrastructure, sparse air conditioning access and electrical grid vulnerabilities). Children, especially young children, are uniquely vulnerable to extreme heat-related morbidity and mortality due to factors

Marching band (MB) artists are subject to exertional heat illnesses (EHIs) similar to other active groups like laborers and athletes. Yet, they are an understudied population with no evidence-based heat safety guidelines. Presented here is a case study of the 233rd annual Bristol, RI Independence Day Parade in 2018 that resulted in over 50 EHIs, including 25 from the Saint Anthony Village marching band (MB) from suburban Minneapolis, MN. This research aims to identify the contributing factors that led to the large number of EHIs, as well as guide ensuring the safety of MB artists in future eve

Extremely hot or humid days are anticipated to continue, occur more often, and intensify over time. School-age children are especially vulnerable to extreme heat. The primary acute health effects of heat on children can range from heat exhaustion to heatstroke. The purpose of this article is to raise awareness of the impact some acute heat-related illnesses have on school-age children's health and to provide school nurses with information on the signs and symptoms of heat-related illnesses as well as prevention tips to share with parents and school administrators. This is the fifth article in

Muscle cooling before and in the middle of a session: there are benefits on subsequent localized endurance performance in a warm environment. J Strength Cond Res 38(3): 533-539, 2024-Localized cold-water immersion (CWI) has been shown to facilitate recovery in the middle of a session of exhaustive repeated forearm contractions. However, it has been suggested that these benefits may be attributed to "precooling" the muscle before an activity, as opposed to cooling a previously overheated muscle. Therefore, this study aimed to deter

In this study, the human thermal stress was quantified across Central Africa (C.A.) using the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI). Although many of the documented studies on the use of UTCI in relation to human health are currently restricted to countries in the northern hemisphere, this contribution constitutes a prerequisite of information for future research in the region. To mitigate the problem of lack of field data in the Central African sub-region, we downloaded UTCI data via the ERA5 reanalysis portal. Based on this data source, we have explored the spatiotemporal characteristics an

Most heat-health studies identified thresholds just outside human comfort zones, which are often too low to be used in heat-warning systems for reducing climate-related health risks. We refined a generalized additive model for selecting thresholds with substantial health risk enhancement, based on Taiwan population records of 2000-2017, considering lag effects and different spatial scales. Reference-adjusted risk ratio (RaRR) is proposed, defined as the ratio between the relative risk of an essential health outcome for a threshold candidate against that for a reference; the threshold with the

Cold-water immersion (CWI) is the gold standard therapy for exertional heat illness (EHS), and it is critical to perform CWI expeditiously when the core temperature exceeds 40°C; however, the treatment comes with risks, most notably hypothermia. Following a major marathon, three runners presented to our emergency department (ED) with symptomatic mild hypothermia requiring re-warming. Prior to developing hypothermia, all three were treated at the racecourse with CWI for EHS. During CWI, there are monitoring methods to determine appropriate cessation: continuous temperature measurement, regular

Selection for heat tolerant (HT) animals in dairy production has been so far linked to estimation of declines in production using milk recording and meteorological information on the day of control using reaction norms. Results from these models show that there is a reasonable amount of genetic variability in the individual response to high heat loads, which makes feasible selection of HT animals at low costs. However, the antagonistic relationship between level of production and response to heat stress (HS) implies that selection for HT animals under this approach must be done with caution so

Environmental exposure to high temperatures can result in abnormalities ranging from mild heat exhaustion to heat stroke with multiorgan system failure. An understanding of the mechanisms of thermoregulation and how those mechanisms fail with extreme heat stress is critical for management of the patient with elevated body temperature in the emergency department.

Extreme heat is the most significant climate threat to public health, disproportionately impacting marginalized groups, including outdoor workers, older adults, and low-income rural populations. While the physiological consequences of heat-related illness-ranging from cardiovascular strain to acute kidney injury-are well-documented, a critical gap remains in the equitable implementation of mitigation strategies. This paper examines North Carolina as a case study due to its proactive leadership in heat-health mitigation, examining the evolution of the state's Heat Health Alert System and the NC

Review of the primary literature was used to develop six propositions regarding the nature of actions of heat stress on fertility of the bovine female. The first two propositions are that the reduction in fertility caused by heat stress is due to 1) negative effects on the competence of the oocyte to be fertilized and 2) support embryonic development and death of the embryo when exposed to elevated temperature. The third proposition is that it remains unclear whether damage to the spermatozoa occurs after deposition in the reproductive tract of a heat-stressed female. Fourth, the embryo acquir

Leukocyte indices integrate shifts in innate and adaptive immune function, making them sensitive indicators of physiological stress in dairy cows. This study evaluated how prolonged heat stress affects immune function in Holstein cows using composite leukocyte indices. Eighteen multiparous cows were studied: one group (n = 8) was exposed to 45 days of heat stress (THI ≥ 72), while the control group (n = 10) stayed under thermal comfort. Heat-stressed cows had a 2.2-fold increase in band neutrophils (p = 0.0035) and a 79% rise in the Nuclear Shift Index (NSI; p = 0.0246). Lymphocyte and monocyt

Heat stress (HS) can result in decreased production and poor fertility performance in dairy cattle. There is limited understanding of the point at which heat load begins to affect fertility, causing a major challenge for the industry. The temperature-humidity index (THI) is a metric commonly used to represent the realized heat load on livestock, as it incorporates both ambient temperature and humidity percentage. The objectives of this study were to estimate the threshold of THI at which the interval of days from first service to conception (FSTC) begins to increase due to HS, evaluate the eff

Peripheral vasoconstriction is a major consequence of fescue toxicosis (FT). However, it remains unclear if major blood vessels, such as the pulmonary artery, are impacted by this disease. This study aimed to evaluate changes in pulmonary arterial pressure (PAP) and different physiological parameters in replacement beef heifers consuming an endophyte-infected (EI) ration. Purebred Angus heifers (216.3 ± 6.1 kg; 9 to 11 mo of age; n = 36) were randomly separated and fed either an EI or endophyte-free (EF) total mixed ration for 49 d. On day 1, iButton temperature data loggers were inserted intr

Heat stress adversely affects poultry production, intestinal health, and antioxidant levels. This study investigated the effects of curcumin supplementation on the jejunal morphology of broilers under heat stress. A total of 108 one-day-old male Arbor Acres broilers were divided into three groups: the control group (C), the heat stress group (HS), and the curcumin group (CUR). The C and HS groups were fed a basal diet, while the CUR group received 50 mg/kg of curcumin, supplemented from days 8-42. From days 21-42, the HS and CUR groups were exposed to 34 ± 1 °C for 8 h daily (9:00-17:00), with
