BACKGROUND: Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is a new emerging zoonosis. Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a life-threatening syndrome caused by hyperinflammation. Here, we report the case of SFTS-associated HLH.
CASE SUMMARY: A 62-year-old man was admitted to local hospital with 8 days of fever and chill. He had leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, and developed seizure. An attending physician examined bone marrow to rule out hematologic malignancy. He was transferred to tertiary referral hospital for suspicious HLH. We decided to confirm its histologic feature for sure.

Nineteen patients with severe aplastic anemia were treated with a 4-day course of horse-anti-human thymocyte globulin (ATG). Thirteen of these patients also received an infusion of HLA one haplotype-identical bone marrow. Toxicity of ATG included fever, chills, rash, arthralgias and elevated liver function tests. Platelet transfusion requirements increased during therapy. Eleven patients died 0.2-9.4 months after beginning ATG therapy. Determining the cause of genital ulcers requires extensive laboratory investigation, particularly if there is no history of sexually transmitted disease. In a patient with a solitary penile erosion who was tired, weak, sweaty and febrile, hematologic and serologic tests suggested infectious mononucleosis, and bacteriologic and serologic studies, along with attempts at virus culture, ruled out syphilis and herpes simplex. The erosion healed soon after the other signs and symptoms resolved. It therefore appears that solitary penile erosions may be a presenting feature of infectious mononucleosis

Laboratory and chest x-ray findings in 56 cases of hepatic amebiasis previously reported are described. Anemia and an elevated E.S.R., frequently without an elevated leucocyte count, were the most frequent hematologic findings. Abnormalities of liver function tests were mild and nonspecific. The most frequent abnormalities seen in chest x-ray were an elevated right hemidiaphragm whose motility on fluoroscopy was reduced or abolished.
