Development of a composite using calcined bone powder and silane cross-linked alginate as bone substitute material.

Calcined bone is an attractive natural material for use as a bone substitute because of its cost-effectiveness and high biocompatibility, which are comparable to that of synthetic hydroxyapatite. However, the calcination process has significantly weakened the mechanical properties. In this study, a composite of calcined bovine bone powder reinforced with silane cross-linked alginate was prepared to assess its biocompatibility, osteoconductivity, and mechanical compatibility as a bone substitute material. Culture studies with osteoblast-like cells (MC3T3-E1) showed no cytotoxicity toward the co

Sperm Encapsulation from 1985 to Date: Technology Evolution and New Challenges in Swine Reproduction.

In the last 30 years, encapsulation technology has been applied to different species to minimize the loss of spermatozoa after artificial insemination. In particular, the vehiculation of boar sperm cells in barium alginate membrane has proved a valid strategy to reduce the risk of polyspermy and optimize in vivo fertilizing yields. Controlled release of male gametes into the female genital tract has reduced the minimum fertilizing dose of spermatozoa. Notwithstanding these results, encapsulation has not yet reached commercial application, largely due to the additional costs of production. Howe

Nanoparticulate assembly of mannuronic acid- and guluronic acid-rich alginate: oral insulin carrier and glucose binder.

The relationship of high and low molecular weight mannuronic acid (M)- and guluronic acid (G)-rich alginate nanoparticles as oral insulin carrier was elucidated. Nanoparticles were prepared through ionotropic gelation using Ca(2+) , and then in vitro physicochemical attributes and in vivo antidiabetic characteristics were examined. The alginate nanoparticles had insulin release retarded when the matrices had high alginate-to-insulin ratio or strong alginate-insulin interaction via OH moiety. High molecular weight M-rich alginate nanoparticles were characterized by assemblies of long polymer c

Fed batch bioconversion of 2-propanol by a solvent tolerant strain of Alcaligenes faecalis entrapped in Ca-alginate gel.

A gram-negative, rod-shaped, aerobe, capable of converting 2-propanol (isopropanol, IPA) to acetone was isolated from an oil/sump, and identified by 16 S rDNA analysis as Alcaligenes faecalis. Investigations showed this strain to be extremely solvent-tolerant and it was subsequently named ST1. In this study, A. faecalis ST1 cells were immobilized by entrapment in Ca-alginate beads (3 mm in diameter), and used in the bioconversion of high concentration IPA. The biodegradation rates and the corresponding microbial growth inside the beads were measured at four different IPA concentration ranges f

The use of calcium alginate dressings in deep hand burns.

Deep burns of the hand are a common serious surgical problem with major occupational and economic implications. Control of haemorrhage during excision and grafting is difficult and postoperative haematoma may reduce graft take. Following excision, important deep structures such as extensor tendons or joints may be exposed. Such tissues do not take free skin grafts satisfactorily. We have found calcium alginate dressings can be of immense help in minimizing these technical problems. We describe our experience in one patient; three other patients have been treated with equal success.

Effects of adjuvants to local anaesthetics on their duration. II. Studies of some substituted dextrans and other macromolecules in rat infraorbital nerve block.

The effects of adding various macromolecular substances to 2% prilocaine on duration of rat infraorbital nerve block were investigated. The tested substances consisted of dextrans with lipophilic or charged substituents as well as other neutral or highly charged macromolecules. Most of the adjuvants caused significant prolongations of sensory block. For substituted dextrans the duration of sensory block degree 3 amounted to between 120% (3% capryldextran II) and 350% (3% carboxymethyldextran) in comparison to prilocaine plain. The corresponding values for hydroxypropylstarch (3%) alginic acid

A ternary composite system of sunflower oil, myofibrillar protein, and alginate in microcapsules significantly affected the viability of L. acidophilus during gastrointestinal delivery.

L.acidophilus is prone to inactivation during gastrointestinal delivery. Therefore, this study constructed a ternary composite system of sunflower oil, myofibrillar protein (MP), and sodium alginate (SA) in microcapsules to improve the gastrointestinal viability of L. acidophilus. Two alginate types, high-mannuronate sodium alginate (HM-SA) and high-guluronate sodium alginate (HG-SA), and two sunflower oil forms, sunflower oil (SFO) and structured sunflower oil (SSFO), were compared. The physicochemical properties of the ternary composite microcapsules were characterized, and their protective

Valorization of Citrus limetta peel powder for probiotic encapsulation: enhanced gastrointestinal and storage stability of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum RAD1 isolated from fermented radish (Raphanus sativus L.).

Probiotics offer significant health benefits when consumed in adequate amounts; however, their viability is often compromised during processing, storage, and transit through the gastrointestinal tract, which limits their effectiveness in functional food applications. In the present study, seventeen indigenous LAB strains were isolated from fermented radish, among which six strains showed potential probiotic characteristics. The strain revealed to have the most desirable probiotic attributes was identified as Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, as confirmed by 16 S rRNA gene sequencing. Further, we

Biomass-Derived Composite Sponges with Synergistic Hemostatic and Antibacterial Efficacy for Emergency Wound Care.

Rapid and pressure-free hemostasis combined with antimicrobial activity is highly desirable for emergency wound management, yet remains challenging to achieve using sustainable biomass-based materials. Herein, we report a multifunctional porous sponge constructed from chitosan (CS), sodium alginate (SA), and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) via a polyelectrolyte coupling strategy. By optimizing the CS/SA ratio and introducing CMC as a hydrogen-bonding reinforcement component, the resulting sponge exhibits an interconnected porous architecture, favorable mechanical resilience under wet conditions,

Study on the high-efficiency adsorption mechanism and performance of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and hydroxy-iron pillared modified montmorillonite granules for Cr(VI) in water.

Water pollution control is critical, with hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) posing severe threats. Adsorption technology is widely adopted for its operational simplicity. This study developed a high-efficiency adsorbent by modifying montmorillonite (MMT) with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and hydroxyl-iron (OH/Fe) pillaring, and the resulting CTAB-OH/Fe-MMT powder was then engineered into robust granules(SA-CTAB-OH/Fe-MMT) by mixing with a sodium alginate(SA) solution and solidifying with calcium chloride. Materials were characterized using SEM, BET, XRD, and FT-IR. Effects of adsorbent dos

Preparation of controlled-released starch-alginate microspheres loaded with thymol nanoemulsions and their therapeutic effects on salmonellosis.

The rise of antimicrobial resistance has spurred interest in natural alternatives such as thymol, a potent broad-spectrum antibacterial agent. However, its clinical potential for treating enteric infections is severely limited by poor stability, low bioavailability, inherent cytotoxicity, and non-targeted release. To overcome these challenges, thymol nanoemulsion was firstly prepared and then incorporated into starch‑sodium alginate microspheres (TMS). This system was comprehensively characterized and evaluated for its antibacterial efficacy, safety, and therapeutic performance both in vitro a

Microfluidics-Generated Cryo-Fracture Resistant CNCs-Reinforced Composite Microcapsules for Enhanced Cryopreservation of Encapsulated Cells.

Immunoisolated cells hold great promise for advancing cell therapeutics; however, their long-term storage remains a critical challenge due to ice formation and mechanical damage to both cells and the encapsulating matrix during cryopreservation. In this study, a cryo-fracture-resistant composite microcapsule has been developed using microfluidic technology, where sodium alginate was reinforced with cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). The composite microcapsules were assessed for their ability to provide structural, mechanical, morphological, chemical, and thermal stability during cryopreservation.

A three-dimensional human model of the fibroblast activation that accompanies bronchopulmonary dysplasia identifies Notch-mediated pathophysiology.

Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a leading complication of premature birth and occurs primarily in infants delivered during the saccular stage of lung development. Histopathology shows decreased alveolarization and a pattern of fibroblast proliferation and differentiation to the myofibroblast phenotype. Little is known about the molecular pathways and cellular mechanisms that define BPD pathophysiology and progression. We have developed a novel three-dimensional human model of the fibroblast activation associated with BPD, and using this model we have identified the Notch pathway as a key d
