Symptoms, such as fever, dry cough, dyspnoea, and respiratory distress, are commonly described in patients infected with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Recently, a growing number of cases pertained to persistent hiccups have been reported by SARS-CoV-2 infected patients. The aim of this systematic review was to screen the current literature and provide a summary of the reported cases of SARS-CoV-2 infected patients presenting with persistent hiccups. According to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, PubMed, Scopu…

BACKGROUND: Hiccups are involuntary contractions of the diaphragm and intercostal muscles, which lead to sudden contractions of the glottis. CAM, such as acupuncture is commonly used and stimulation of the vagus nerve and interference with phrenic nerve conduction are also used to treat hiccups. However, there is little evidence on the effectiveness of acupuncture for cancer-related hiccups. We will plan to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of RCTs to evaluate the current evidence on the effects of acupuncture for cancer-related hiccups.
METHOD: The following databases will be sea…

Hiccup is a sudden-onset repeated involuntary and spasmodic contraction of the diaphragm and intercostal muscle accompanied by laryngeal closure, generating the characteristic inspiratory sound and discomfort. Various factors including drugs may trigger the hiccups. There are some reports regarding the possible links between psychotropic agents that can affect the dopaminergic system and the triggering of hiccup; however, to our knowledge, there are no data regarding sertraline-induced hiccup. We present the case of a boy with obsessive-compulsive disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity d…

RATIONALE: Pathophysiologic mechanisms of the central nervous system, such as stroke, can be associated with intractable hiccups. Intractable hiccups can be associated with potentially fatal consequences, thus requiring safe management in an inpatient rehabilitation facility (IRF) setting with a multidisciplinary team approach to optimize mobility and feeding.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 49-year-old male presented to the emergency department with complaints of vomiting and dizziness.
DIAGNOSES: Head computed tomography revealed moderate acute inferior cerebellar infarct in the territory of the poste…

Our case had hiccups arising in an adolescent with the attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and conduct disorder (CD) after adding aripiprazole treatment to extended-release methylphenidate. Actually, antipsychotics are also used in the treatment of hiccups, but studies suggest that they can cause hiccups as well. Within 12 hours of taking 2.5 mg aripiprazole added to extended-release methylphenidate at a dose of 54 mg/day, 16-year-old boy began having hiccups in the morning, which lasted after 3-4 hours. As a result, aripiprazole was discontinued and methylphenidate was continu…

Post-traumatic hiccups are an uncommon but distressing complication of traumatic brain injury (TBI), often resistant to conventional pharmacological agents, and the underlying mechanism may involve central neurological disruption of inhibitory pathways rather than gastrointestinal or metabolic aetiologies. We report a male patient in his early 30s who developed refractory hiccups following moderate TBI sustained in a high-impact motor vehicle collision; standard agents including chlorpromazine, metoclopramide, and haloperidol provided no meaningful relief after 48 h of combined treatment. Intr…

BACKGROUND: Myocardial infarction (MI) commonly presents with chest pain, dyspnea, diaphoresis, and nausea; however, atypical and nonclassical presentations are increasingly recognized and may delay diagnosis and management. Persistent hiccups as the sole presenting manifestation of ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) are exceedingly rare, with only a few cases reported. Awareness of such unusual presentations is essential to avoid missed or delayed diagnoses.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 60-year-old male presented to the outpatient clinic with a 1-month history of persistent hiccups without c…

A 74-year-old man presented with persistent hiccups and headache persisting for 2 days. An anticoagulant was administered for his coronary heart disease. Cranial computed tomography (CT) revealed an intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) located in the right occipital lobe, without any abnormal findings around the brainstem. The patient underwent endoscopic hematoma evacuation via a burr hole, resulting in immediate resolution of hiccups. Following an uneventful postoperative course, the patient experienced recurrent hiccups on the 47th day postsurgery. A subsequent CT scan taken on the 50th day revea…

BACKGROUND: To our knowledge, previous studies have not investigated hiccups in patients with cancer with detailed patient-level data with the goal of capturing a broad spectrum of hiccup symptomatology.
METHODS: This multi-site, single institution study examined consecutive medical records to better understand hiccups in patients with cancer.
RESULTS: A total of 320 patients are the focus of this report. The median age of patients when hiccups were first reported in the medical record was 63 years (range: 21, 97 years) with 284 (89%) men and 36 (11%) women. The most common diagnose was gast…

A 49-year-old woman, with a two-year-history of multiple screlosis (MS), noticed postural dizziness, intractable hiccups and vomiting. On admission, she had mild quadriparesis, hypesthesia below the C5 level, and a girdle sensation at the T5 and L1 levels. A CSF examination showed slight increases in the protein level (48 mg/dl) and cell count (7/mm3). Brain MRI demonstrated no obvious lesion in the medulla oblongata. The head-up-tilting test showed a decrease in the blood pressure from 105/63 mmHg to 70/55 mmHg. The pulse rate, however, increased from 57/min to 72/min. The cold pressure test …

Intractable hiccups are rare but debilitating, and may cause sleep disturbances, nutritional impairment, exhaustion, and a severe deterioration in quality of life. When pharmacological and interventional treatments fail, selected surgical procedures targeting the phrenic nerve may be considered. We report the anaesthetic management of a 32-year-old woman with idiopathic intractable hiccups who underwent right-sided selective phrenic nerve surgery guided by thoracoscopic neuromonitoring. Because thoracoscopic exposure and intraoperative neuromonitoring were required simultaneously, a hybrid air…

Steroids are commonly used for medical purposes. While hiccups are a recognized side effect of steroid therapy, we have not found any reports of hiccups interfering with the progress of radiotherapy. A case of dexamethasone (DEX)-induced hiccups (DIH) during CyberKnife radiotherapy (CKR) is presented. A 42-year-old man with neurofibromatosis type I had a history of malignant peripheral schwannomas originating in the right femur. We started to perform CKR with oral DEX at an increased dose of 4 mg/day for the recurrence of cranial metastasis and primary lesions. Severe hiccups developed four da…

Hiccups, a common and usually self-limiting condition, are caused by involuntary, spasmodic contractions of the diaphragm and intercostal muscles, followed by the sudden closure of the glottis. While most cases resolve spontaneously, persistent hiccups (lasting 48 hours to one month) and intractable hiccups (lasting more than one month) require medical attention. Intractable hiccups, although rare, can significantly impair a patient's quality of life. The etiology of intractable hiccups is diverse, but they are often associated with serious underlying medical conditions, such as severe renal d…

Hiccups are common reflexes and many treatment methods have been reported. Chlorpromazine is a known treatment option for hiccups, but its efficacy under general anesthesia remains unclear. We report the case of a patient with vagal schwannoma who developed hiccups while under general anesthesia. Muscle relaxants were not used because the patient was under neuromonitoring. The depth of anesthesia was deepened; however, the hiccups did not disappear. The hiccups were relieved by intravenous chlorpromazine administration (total; 5 mg), which allowed for surgery under neuromonitoring. This case i…

BACKGROUND Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) can present with atypical chest pain or symptoms not attributed to heart disease, such as indigestion. Hiccups, a benign and self-limited condition, can become persistent or intractable with overlooked underlying etiology. There are various causes of protracted hiccups, including metabolic abnormalities, psychogenic disorders, malignancy, central nervous system pathology, medications, pulmonary disorders, or gastrointestinal etiologies. It is rarely attributed to cardiac disease. CASE REPORT We report a case of intractable hiccups in a 51-year-old male …

Optic neuropathy and transverse myelitis (TM) are common symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS) but may also be seen in association with the antibody-mediated autoimmune disorder, neuromyelitis optica (NMO). We report a female patient presenting with intractable vomiting and hiccups and TM shortly followed by an acute encephalopathy, most likely due to NMO spectrum disorder. Serum and cerebrospinal fluid NMO antibodies were negative. Serial MRI abnormalities included longitudinally extensive TM of the cervical cord, focal T2-weighted hyperintensity of the area postrema and lesions in both thalami…
