[Neuroimmunological mechanisms of development of occupational nervous system lesions].

One hundred and fifty fire liquidators, including 68 persons with consequences of acute intoxication with a complex of toxic substances, were examined over time. The development of occupational nervous system injuries was shown to be followed by systemic immunological disorders. Following 8 years, the patients with occupational neurointoxication were found to have impaired processes of lymphocytic activation (higher lymphocytes expressing CD25 and CD95) in the presence of significant immunosuppression. There was evidence for the involvement of autoimmune reactions in the formation of an immune

Vagus nerve contributes to metabolic syndrome in high-fat diet-fed young and adult rats.

What is the central question of this study? Different nerve contributes periods of life are known for their differential sensitivity to interventions, and increased parasympathetic activity affects the development and maintenance of obesity. Thus, we evaluated the involvement of the vagus nerve by performing a vagotomy in young or adult rats that were offered an obesogenic high-fat diet. What is the main finding and its importance? Although the accumulation of adipose tissue decreased in both younger and older groups, the younger rats showed a greater response to the effects of vagotomy in gen

Heart rate variability as a biomarker for transdiagnostic depressive and anxiety symptom trajectory in adolescents and young adults.

Internalizing psychopathology is associated with abnormalities in heart rate variability (HRV). Lower HRV that reflects reduced parasympathetic nervous system activity has been observed in depressive and anxiety disorders. Existing studies predominantly used categorical rather than dimensional approaches, the latter of which better addresses clinical comorbidity and heterogeneity. Moreover, there is little evidence on the role of HRV in longitudinal symptom trajectory in adolescents and young adults. The current study examined the association between HRV and internalizing symptom trajectory us

Assessment of Visual and Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials in Patients with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis.

BACKGROUND: The present study was aimed to evaluate parameters of visual and brainstem auditory evoked potentials (VEP, BAEP) in euthyreotic Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) patients without central nervous system involvement. METHODS: 100 HT patients (92 women, 8 men), mean age 46.9 years, and 50 healthy controls. They underwent a neurological examination, thyroid hormone levels, thyroid autoantibody titers, and brain imaging. Latencies and amplitudes of the N75, P100, and N145 component of VEP and the I-V components of BAEP were analyzed. RESULTS: The neurological examination revealed in 31 pa

The autonomic nervous system in anorexia nervosa - an implication for the fat tissue.

Eating disorders are a heterogeneous group of diseases affecting mainly young people in developed countries. Among them, anorexia nervosa (AN) is the one with the highest mortality, up to five times higher compared to healthy individuals. The etiology of this medical condition is complex and still un- certain. However, disturbances of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and increased lipolysis resulting in a decrease of the adipose tissue volume are common findings among AN patients. Since ANS is directly connected to adipocyte tissue, thus significantly affecting the body's metabolic homeostas

Skin conductance reflects drug-induced changes in blood levels of cortisol, adrenaline and noradrenaline in dogs.

To verify availability of skin conductance (SC) as an indicator for the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity in dogs, the changes in SC and blood levels of stress-related hormones induced by drugs were compared. SC and cortisol, adrenaline and noradrenaline levels were measured in 5 dogs on 4 occasions with or without drug-induced sedation at 7-day intervals (no treatment, intramuscular medetomidine 0.01 mg/kg, intramuscular acepromazine 0.1 mg/kg and intravenous fentanyl 0.02 mg/kg). The fentanyl treatment produced significantly higher levels of SC and plasma cortisol and adrenaline comp

The effect of propranolol on free fatty acid mobilization and resting metabolic rate.

The role of the sympathetic nervous system in free fatty acid (FFA) mobilization was assessed in this study. FFA turnover rate using 1-14C-palmitic acid and metabolic rate by using indirect calorimetry were measured in ten white and 12 Pima Indian males after an overnight fast and during propranolol infusion (120 micrograms/kg fat-free mass [FFM] bolus and 1.2 micrograms/kg FFM/min). Baseline FFA turnovers were similar in both racial groups and decreased similarly following propranolol infusion (-16% +/- 4%; P less than .001, n = 22). This decrease was greater in more obese subjects (decrease

Evaluation of Intensity of Sleep Bruxism in Arterial Hypertension.

Sleep bruxism (SB) is a masticatory muscle activity during sleep that is characterized as rhythmic (phasic) or non-rhythmic (tonic). The recent hypothesis on the etiology of SB supports the role of the central and autonomic nervous systems. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to assess the intensity of SB in patients with arterial hypertension. A total of 70 adults participated in this study: 35 patients with hypertension (study group) and 35 normotensive subjects (control group). Data were recorded using home portable cardiorespiratory polygraphy. The bruxism episode index (BEI) in the study g

Antimutagenic activity of new analogues of fluphenazine.

Fluphenazine (FPh) exhibited antimutagenic activity in lymphocyte cultures, markedly decreasing genotoxic effects of standard mutagenic agents present in cell cultures. However, the strong pharmacological activity of this neuroleptic drug, together with its serious side effects on the central nervous system, limits its use as an antimutagenic compound. In this paper we describe a route of chemical synthesis of FPh analogues that are more hydrophilic than the model compound, thus probably penetrate more weakly through the blood-brain barrier. These new analogues were tested for their antimutage

Impact of Physiological and Psychological Stress on Glaucoma Development and Progression: A Narrative Review.

Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Presently, elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) is the only approved modifiable risk factor. A consensus of the current literature suggests that both physiological and psychological stress may also impact the lifelong course of glaucoma. Specifically, stress is known to influence sympathetic nervous system activity. An increase in sympathetic nervous system activity may elevate a person's blood pressure (BP) and IOP, and both are strongly associated with glaucomatous disease. Anxiety and depression have more conflicting evidence i

Parasympathetic regulation and support from family and friends predict prosocial development in U.S. Mexican-origin adolescents.

Both parasympathetic nervous system regulation and receipt of social support from close relationships contribute to prosocial development, although few studies have examined their combined influences in adolescence and particularly within racially and ethnically minoritized populations. In this longitudinal study of 229 U.S. Mexican-origin adolescents (48% female-identifying), youths reported on receipt of social support from family and friends from 10 to 16 years, had their baseline respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) measured at 17 years, reported their prosocial behavior and completed the Mi

[Changes in the autonomic control of the cardiovascular system in human aging. meta-analysis.].

It is known that with the aging, the adaptive capabilities of his body decrease. This is due to both changes in autonomic regulation and morphological remodeling of the cardiovascular system. To assess age-related changes in the autonomic nervous and cardiovascular systems, a meta-analysis was carried out, which examined changes in the aging of hemodynamic parameters [blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR)], heart rate variability (HRV), catecholamine concentrations, electrical activity of muscle sympathetic nerves (MSHA) , as well as the magnitude of the BR. The results of 32 works from the

Increased salivary fluid flow in children with newly diagnosed allergic rhinitis.

OBJECTIVES: The pathogenesis of allergic rhinitis (AR) may involve dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Salivary fluid flow and salivary alpha-amylase (sAA) secretion are able to reflect the activity of parasympathetic (PNS) and sympathetic nervous system (SNS), respectively. The study aims to address the ANS profile in children with newly diagnosed AR by measuring the salivary secretion pattern. METHODS: We recruited thirty-three children with newly diagnosed AR and thirty-one age- and sex-matched healthy children as control. Saliva samples were collected in the morning and t

Urinary bladder distention evoked visceromotor responses as a model for bladder pain in mice.

Approximately 3-8 million people in the United States suffer from interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS), a debilitating condition characterized by increased urgency and frequency of urination, as well as nocturia and general pelvic pain, especially upon bladder filling or voiding. Despite years of research, the cause of IC/BPS remains elusive and treatment strategies are unable to provide complete relief to patients. In order to study nervous system contributions to the condition, many animal models have been developed to mimic the pain and symptoms associated with IC/BPS. One s

CDK5 and its activator P35 in normal pituitary and in pituitary adenomas: relationship to VEGF expression.

Pituitary tumors are monoclonal adenomas that account for about 10-15% of intracranial tumors. Cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (CDK5) regulates the activities of various proteins and cellular processes in the nervous system, but its potential roles in pituitary adenomas are poorly understood. The kinase activity of CDK5 requires association with an activating protein, p35 (also known as CDK5 activator 1, p35). Here, we show that functional CDK5, associated with p35, is present in normal human pituitary and in pituitary tumors. Furthermore, p35 mRNA and protein levels were higher in pituitary adenoma

Effects of morphine withdrawal syndrome on endo-oligopeptidase (EC 3.4.22.19) activity.

Endo-oligopeptidase (EC 3.4.22.19), an enzyme capable of generating enkephalin by single cleavage from enkephalin-containing peptides, was examined in several areas of the central nervous system (CNS) as well as in the immune and endocrine tissues of rats chronically treated with morphine and submitted to naloxone-induced withdrawal. A specific fluorogenic substrate was used to determine the endopeptidase 22.19 activity. A non-uniform increase in endopeptidase 22.19 activity was detected in the CNS. The highest increase in endopeptidase 22.19 specific activity was found in the dorsal hippocamp

Control of rhythmic behaviour by a hierarchy of linked oscillators in crustacea.

In Homarus, the central pattern generators for the rhythmic motor activities of the gastric teeth and the pyloric chamber are located in the stomatogastric ganglion. It is shown that independent gastric and pyloric oscillators are also contained in higher nervous centres (the commissural ganglia) and provide a phasic rhythmic input to the stomatogastric pattern generators. This demonstrates that rhythmic behaviour can be organized by a hierarchy of linked oscillators each capable of producing the rhythm.

Augmented norepinephrine and renin output in response to maximal exercise in hypertensive coarctectomy patients.

To evaluate a possible neural or renal contribution to the hypertension that occurs in some patients following coarctation of aorta repair, 35 patients underwent graded bicycle exercise with serial measurements of plasma norepinephrine concentrations and plasma renin activity. Sixteen patients with coarctectomy who had systolic or diastolic hypertension at peak exercise were compared with 19 normotensive patients with coarctectomy. The average time interval between coarctation repair and study was significantly longer (p less than 0.05) in the hypertensive group than in the normotensive patien

DNA-Templated Silver Nanoclusters Demonstrate Potent Antimicrobial Activity Against the Clinically Relevant Pathogens, Neisseria meningitidis and Streptococcus pneumoniae.

Antimicrobial resistance is growing among the causative agents of bacterial meningitis, Neisseria meningitidis and Streptococcus pneumoniae, which trigger detrimental neuroinflammatory responses within the central nervous system. Here, we evaluated the antimicrobial potential of DNA-templated and stabilized silver nanoclusters (AgNCs). AgNCs were templated on a single hairpin (HP) or fibrous hairpin structures (HP-F). HP-F provided higher local concentrations of AgNCs, when compared to HP, and exhibited stable physicochemical properties and potent antimicrobial activity. Furthermore, at low si

Hemodynamic changes in post-suspension rats during gradual hemorrhage.

We examined the changes of hemodynamic parameters in nembutal-anesthetized rats during gradual hemorrhage (2 ml/100 g body weight during 30 min). In control rats blood pressure began to decline starting from 3rd min of bleeding and from 5th min it was accompanied by cardiac deceleration. Hindlimb vascular resistance was only slightly increased up to 15th min (by 20-30%) and then began to grow drastically. Less prominent changes of hemodynamics were observed in post-suspension rats. The results indicate that when activity of sympathetic nervous system is blunted with anesthetic post-suspension
