Horner's Syndrome Following Varicella Vaccination.

A 52-year-old female with no significant past medical history presented with disseminated herpes zoster as well as a Horner's syndrome and retinal haemorrhages 3 weeks after receiving the varicella vaccine. The patient began treatment with valacyclovir, 1g three times per day, and gabapentin, 300mg three times a day, for pain. Over the following month, the rash and the retinal haemorrhages resolved. The ptosis and anisocoria also resolved over the following two months.

Horner's Syndrome in a Case of Granulocytic Sarcoma.

Tuberculosis is one of the leading infectious causes of death and as such represents a major global health problem. Infants may develop congenital tuberculosis from an infectious mother or, most commonly, they may acquire postnatal disease by contact with an infectious adult source. Important epidemiologic, pathogenetic, and clinical data regarding the management of infantile disease are reviewed. Diagnostic evaluation includes tuberculin skin tests, chest radiography and other imaging studies, smears and cultures, examination of the cerebrospinal fluid, and polymerase chain reaction, as well

Horner's syndrome and bilateral esophageal duplications.

Bilateral esophageal duplications are exceptionally rare. A 3-month-old male presented with a left-sided Horner's syndrome. Upon further investigation, bilateral upper thoracic masses with an air-fluid level within the right-sided mass were found. Sequential thoracotomies at 1-week intervals confirmed the presence of bilateral esophageal duplications. At 1 year of age the patient is growing normally and is asymptomatic except for a persistent Horner's syndrome. We believe this to be the first case of bilateral esophageal duplication cysts presenting with Horner's syndrome.

Horner's syndrome after neck surgery.

Horner's syndrome (oculosympathetic paresis) is characterised by the classic triad of ipsilateral palpebral ptosis, pupillary miosis and facial anhidrosis. The syndrome arises from the interruption of sympathetic innervation to the eye and adnexa at varying levels. It is a rare complication of neck surgery. We describe 6 patients who presented with Horner's syndrome after a neck procedure in our department during the last 5 years and review the different neck procedures that can cause it.

[Usefulness of apraclonidine in the diagnosis of Horner syndrome].

CASE REPORTS: We present four cases: two males with Horner Syndrome, who were diagnosed by means of apraclonidine 0.5% and cocaine 4% tests respectively. Two children with anisocoria, one of whom had Horner Syndrome confirmed with apraclonidine 1% and the other, in whom an apraclonidine test ruled out this syndrome but in whom pilocarpine 0.125% confirmed Adie's pupil. DISCUSSION: Apraclonidine drops (1% and 0.5%) may aid in the diagnosis of Horner Syndrome and are easier to obtain than cocaine.

[Horner's syndrome secondary to epidural anesthesia].

INTRODUCTION: The Horner's syndrome in association with the anesthetic techniques is produced by a blockade of the stellate ganglion sympathetic fibers. This complication is produced by the local anesthetic non-expected migration when it is administered either in the epidural space while performing an epidural block or inside the aponeurosis vascular elements during the performance of a brachial plexus block. Its evolution is quick, with benign incident that disappears in a few hours, without leaving any sequels. It can occur in patients without any previous clinical condition. CLINICAL CASE:

Acquired Horner's syndrome: clinical review.

BACKGROUND: Horner's syndrome results from disruption of the sympathetic innervation to the eye anywhere along its three-neuron circuit. It is essential to be familiar with the oculosympathetic pathway, the structures that are in close proximity to it, and the disease processes that may interrupt it when an evaluation is made of an acquired Horner's syndrome, since it may be a manifestation of a life-threatening condition. CASE REPORTS AND DISCUSSION: Four patients with acquired Horner's syndrome resulting from various etiologies are presented. The first case is that of a 41-year-old man with

"Congenital" Horner's syndrome and carotid dissection.

The authors describe a child presenting with Horner's syndrome after the repeated application of birthing forceps to the head and neck during vaginal delivery. Magnetic resonance imaging and angiography confirmed that the proximal right internal carotid artery (ICA) showed injury caused by dissection. Carotid duplex and transcranial ultrasonography provided supporting evidence of distal right ICA occlusion with the development of intracranial collaterals. The authors interpret these findings to indicate that the child suffered a traumatic dissection of the distal right ICA to mimic "congenital

[Congenital Horner's syndrome associated to varicella].

CASE REPORT: We present a case of congenital Horner's Syndrome in a four year-old boy. The patient was referred from the Dermatology ward after a check up for malformations present from birth on the left upper limb. A significant factor was determined: a varicella related infection in the mother during the 12th week of pregnancy. Blood tests confirmed a diagnosis of congenital varicella syndrome. DISCUSSION: Congenital Horner's Syndrome is a rare entity, caused mainly by traumatic deliveries. Very rarely it is produced by severe lesions, such as neuroblastoma or viral infections as varicella.

Horner's syndrome associated with Neospora infection.

A working collie cross was presented with a three-month history of vague neurological signs and a right-sided Horner's syndrome. Denervation hypersensitivity testing suggested a first order syndrome. There was a significant positive titre to Neospora and clinical signs resolved completely following treatment.
