Why is water insecurity so distressing? Evidence from Iran that interpersonal conflict is key.

Chronic household water insecurity is consistently linked to distress and poor mental health, yet the social pathways remain under-tested. We examine multiple theorized socially situated mechanisms that may explain how household water insecurity translates into depressive symptoms, using population-representative 2024 survey-interview data (N = 685) from Sistan and Baluchestan, Iran. Household water insecurity (HWISE-12), depressive symptoms (PHQ-9), and five mechanisms-interpersonal conflict, distributive injustice, procedural injustice, institutional distrust, and water-labor burden-were mea

Integrating a biopsychosocial perspective: WHODAS 2.0 enhances functioning assessment in Parkinson's disease.

Functioning is a critical health indicator alongside mortality and morbidity, yet it remains under-assessed in Parkinson's disease (PD), where symptom-based scales predominate. Identifying functional limitations across multiple domains is essential to improve care and guide tailored interventions. The World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0 (WHODAS 2.0), based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), offers a biopsychosocial measure of disability applicable across conditions and cultures. This cross-sectional study aimed to describe

The Effect of Catastrophic Health Expenditure on Work After Retirement.

Several factors can force retirees to go to paid work. Catastrophic health-care expenditure (CHCE) is one of the driving forces for retirees to go to paid work. This cross-sectional study was based on 6,307 Iran retirees' data. Xu method was used to calculate CHCE, and a logit model was estimated to show the association between CHCE and bridge employment. Other control variables were added to the model. The findings showed that there was positive relationship between CHCE and bridge employment. Retirement pension had negative relationship with work after retirement. Prevalence of work after re

Prevalence and socioeconomic impact of upper gastrointestinal disorders in the United States: results of the US Upper Gastrointestinal Study.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: This study examined the prevalence of upper gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms and symptom groupings and determined impact on disability days in a nationally representative US sample. METHODS: A telephone survey of 21,128 adults was conducted including questions about the presence of upper GI symptoms during the past 3 months. Respondents were categorized as symptomatic (ie, reported GI symptoms once per month) or asymptomatic. The survey included questions about missed work, leisure activity, or household activity days. Symptom groupings were identified by using factor analysi

COVID-19 Pandemic Impacted Food Security and Caused Psychosocial Stress in Selected States of Nigeria.

The COVID-19 disease has infected many countries, causing generalized impacts on different income categories. We carried out a survey among households (n = 412) representing different income groups in Nigeria. We used validated food insecurity experience and socio-psychologic tools. Data obtained were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The earning capacities of the respondents ranged from 145 USD/month for low-income earners to 1945 USD/month for high-income earners. A total of 173 households (42%) ran out of food during the COVID-19 pandemic. All categories of households e

Psychological Well-Being of Female-Headed Households Based on Age Stratification: A Nationwide Cross-Sectional Study in South Korea.

The female-headed household is a new vulnerable group associated with health inequality. The purpose of this study was to analyze psychological well-being and related factors among Korean female-headed households based on age stratification. This was a secondary analysis of data extracted from the fifth Korean Working Conditions Survey (2017), which included a total of 9084 female-headed households. Their psychological well-being was measured by the WHO-5 well-being index. A total of 39.8% of female-headed household workers were psychologically unhealthy. Among them, 2.2% of those aged 15-30 y…

Modeling the indirect economic implications of musculoskeletal disorders and treatment.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal disorders impose a substantial economic burden on American society, but few studies have examined the economic benefits associated with treating such disorders. The purpose of this research is to estimate the indirect economic implications of activity limitations associated with musculoskeletal disorders and to quantifying the potential economic gains from elective surgery to treat arthritis of the knee and hip. METHODS: Using regression analysis with the National Health Interview Survey (2004-2010 data, n=185,829 adults) we quantify the relationship between severi

Remote work frequency and loneliness among United Kingdom employees: the moderating role of active and passive social media use.

OBJECTIVE: This study examines the relationship between remote work frequency and loneliness and assesses the differential moderating effects of active (e.g., posting content) versus passive (e.g., scrolling or browsing content) social media use. METHODS: Using data from Waves 13 and 14 (2021-2024) of the UK Household Longitudinal Study (UKHLS), comprising 7,601 individuals and 15,202 person-wave observations, this study employs fixed-effects regression models. RESULTS: The findings reveal that higher remote work frequency is positively associated with greater loneliness (β = 0.059, 95% conf

Integrating social contact and environmental data in evaluating tuberculosis transmission in a South African township.

BACKGROUND: Population models of tuberculosis transmission have not accounted for social contact structure and the role of the environment in which tuberculosis is transmitted. METHODS: We utilized extensions to the Wells-Riley model of tuberculosis transmission, using exhaled carbon dioxide as a tracer gas, to describe transmission patterns in an endemic community. Drawing upon social interaction data and carbon dioxide measurements from a South African township, we created an age-structured model of tuberculosis transmission in households, public transit, schools, and workplaces. We fit the

Gender inequality at home is associated with poorer health for women.

BACKGROUND: As more women have joined the work force, the difference in employment rate between men and women has decreased, in Sweden as well as many other countries. Despite this, traditional gender patterns regarding, for example, responsibility for household duties still remain. Women are on sick leave more often than men, and previous studies have indicated that an unequal split of household responsibilities and perceived gender inequality could be associated with negative health outcomes. AIMS: The aim of the present study was to explore whether an unequal distribution of responsibiliti

[Risk factors for premature birth. I. Analysis of selected factors in a group of non-working women].

Selected risk factors responsible for premature birth in a group of women non-employed professionally were discussed. The analysis included demographic (age, education, marital status, maternal body weight, the number of previous pregnancies, as well as spontaneous and artificial abortions reported in interview), social (smoking, exposure to tobacco smoke, family economic status, standard of living conditions, and facilities used in running the household), and medical (maternal health status before and during pregnancy, and perinatal care) factors, as well as work load at home. Differences in demographic composition and in work, social, and functional limitations among the populations with unipolar depression and bipolar disorder: results from a nationally representative sample.

BACKGROUND: Existing literature on mood disorders suggests that the demographic distribution of bipolar disorder may differ from that of unipolar depression, and also that bipolar disorder may be especially disruptive to personal functioning. Yet, few studies have directly compared the populations with unipolar depressive and bipolar disorders, whether in terms of demographic characteristics or personal limitations. Furthermore, studies have generally examined work-related costs, without fully investigating the extensive personal limitations associated with diagnoses of specific mood disorders

[Effect of employment and domestic load on fetal development and length of gestation in a birth cohort study].

OBJECTIVE: Published studies are not conclusive on the impact of certain occupational exposures in pregnancy, stressing the need to consider the double role, professional and family, of women. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of employment and domestic load on the duration of pregnancy and fetal development. METHODS: Using Univariate and Multivariate regression models, we studied the association of preterm deliveries (PPT) (<37 weeks), full term newborns with low weight (BPT) (<2500g) and small for their gestational age (PEG) (<10th percentile) in weight, length and head

Guinea worm: an in-depth study of what happens to mothers, families and communities.

This paper reports on the impact of maternal morbidity due to guinea worm, dracunculiasis, on the care and health of children under 24 months old, and the way in which the mothers and the family coped with the often extended periods of disability. This qualitative study is based on observation and in-depth interviewing, supplemented by focus group discussions. Of 42 mothers with guinea worm in two hyperendemic areas of Oyo and Kwara States, 28 were either bedridden or only able to hobble short distances with the help of a stick; the average period of incapacity was almost 9 weeks. Of the four

Economic assessment of burden of animal diseases in donkeys in Ethiopia.

Working donkeys play a crucial role in Ethiopia's household and agricultural economies but they carry a massive, neglected burden of disease. There is currently limited understanding of the size and scale of this burden. This study aimed to quantify the burden of disease in working donkeys in Ethiopia using the Animal Health Loss Envelope (AHLE) metric. The AHLE measures all cause disease burden by estimating the gap between actual production and potential output in an ideal, animal disease-free scenario. An enterprise budget analysis was conducted under two health scenarios (current and ideal

Determinants of household decision making autonomy among rural married women based on Ethiopian demography health survey: a multilevel analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Decisions made at the household level have great impact on the welfare of the individual, the local community, as well as the welfare of the nation. Women's independent decision on reproductive health increases women's access to health information and utilization of reproductive services. This has great impact on maternal and child health outcomes. However, women in developing or low-income countries often have limited autonomy and control over their household decisions. Therefore the main purpose of this research project is to investigate the potential determinants of rural wome

Understanding vaccine hesitancy in polio eradication in northern Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Vaccine hesitancy constitutes a major threat to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), and to further expansion of routine immunisation. Understanding hesitancy, leading in some cases to refusal, is vital to the success of GPEI. Re-emergence of circulating wild poliovirus in northern Nigeria in mid-2016, after 24months polio-free, gives urgency to this. But it is equally important to protect and sustain the global gains available through routine immunisation in a time of rising scepticism and potential rejection of specific vaccines or immunisation more generally. METHODS
