Effectiveness of narrow vegetative filter strips in regulating sediment deposition in floodplain agricultural drainage ditches.

Floodplain agroecosystems are particularly susceptible to sediment redistribution due to seasonal flooding, snowmelt, and agricultural activities. However, field-based evidence on the performance of narrow vegetative filter strips (VFS) under such dynamic hydrological conditions remains limited. This study evaluated the effectiveness of narrow VFS (2 and 4 m) in regulating sediment deposition within agricultural drainage ditches of the Lake Saint-Pierre floodplain, Québec, Canada, a cold-region agroecosystem characterized by recurrent spring flooding. From 2019 to 2023, sediment deposition dyn

Isotopic niche plasticity of American alligators within the southern Everglades.

Hydrologic alterations within the Everglades have degraded American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) habitat, reduced prey base, and i … od, and year. The variability in intraspecific niche dynamics, landscape heterogeneity, and dynamic hydrology are considerations for designing sustainable management strategies to conserve and enhance alligator populations within the Everglades landscape.

Investigating the controlling factors on salinity in soil, groundwater, and river water in a semi-arid agricultural watershed using SWAT-Salt.

Soil salinity can have a significant impact on crop yield, particularly in arid and semi-arid irrigated watersheds wherein irrigation and inadequate drainage often combine to increase salt ion concentrations in soil water. To control salinity, the principal step is to identify the key environmental and hydrologic factors that govern the fate and transport of salts in these irrigated areas. To accomplish this objective, global sensitivity analysis is applied to the newly developed SWAT-Salt model, which simulates the reactive transport of 8 major salt ions (SO4, Ca, Mg, Na, K, Cl, CO3, and HCO3

High-frequency monitoring reveals how hydrochemistry and dissolved carbon respond to rainstorms at a karstic critical zone, Southwestern China.

Hydrochemical behavior and dissolved carbon dynamics are highly-sensitive to hydrological variations in the monsoon-influenced karstic critical zone which has high chemical weathering rates and experiences strong anthropogenic impact. Continuous high-frequency monitoring in the spring outlet of a karstic catchment in Southwestern China revealed that most hydrochemical variables changed distinctively in response to hydrologic variations, influenced by mixing of different sources and miscellaneous biogeochemical processes. Na+, K+ and SO42- varied significantly with hydrology, showing weak chemo…

Biogeochemical processes controlling aquatic quality during drying and rewetting events in a Mediterranean non-perennial river reach.

Desiccation and re-flooding processes play a key role on hydrological features of non-perennial rivers. This study addresses the effects of these processes on the aquatic quality and unravels underlying biogeochemical processes of an intermittent river reach in southern Greece containing a spring-fed pool. Combined spatio-temporal sampling for physicochemical parameters, major ions and nutrients and high frequency automatic monitoring during a hydrological year (2010-2011) indicate that during the dry period, solute variation was controlled by "concentration" processes (i.e. evaporative concen

Distribution of volatile organic compounds in Sicilian groundwaters analysed by head space-solid phase micro extraction coupled with gas chromatography mass spectrometry (SPME/GC/MS).

This work presents the results of an assessment of the existence and concentration of 13 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in groundwaters from 14 hydrological basins in Sicily (25,710km (2)). On the basis of hydrological, hydrogeochemical and geological studies, 324 sampling points were selected. All groundwater sampled were collected twice, from October to December 2004 and from February to May 2005, and were analysed to determine the concentration and spatial distribution of the VOCs in the aquifers. The need to analyze a large number of samples in a short space of time so as to obtain quan

Geochemistry at a Karst Spring Reveals Complex Stormflow Dynamics in an Eogenetic Karst Aquifer.

The Floridan Aquifer System (FAS) is a triple porosity, eogenetic karst aquifer that contains extensive phreatic cave networks embedded in a high permeability carbonate matrix. These unique characteristics create complex flow dynamics that impact residence time distributions within the FAS, which are important to constrain for implementing effective water resource strategies. The impacts of eogenetic karst characteristics on seasonal and longer term hydrological dynamics have been previously evaluated; however, stormflow remains understudied. Our study explores stormflow dynamics at a karst sp

A national-scale high-resolution runoff risk and channel network mapping workflow for diffuse pollution management.

Managing diffuse pollution from agricultural land requires a spatially explicit risk assessment that can be applied over large areas. Major components of such assessments are the precise definition of both channel networks that often originate as small channels and streams, and Hydrologically Sensitive Areas (HSAs) of storm runoff that occur on land surfaces. Challenges relate to regions of complex topography and land use patterns, particularly those which have been heavily modified by arterial drainage. In this study, a national scale, transferrable workflow and analysis were developed using

Cost-effectiveness analysis of extensive green roofs for urban stormwater control in response to future climate change scenarios.

Green roof, as a popular low impact development practice, has become important to mitigate adverse impacts of future climate change on urban stormwater. However, there is limited information regarding assessment of the effectiveness of green roofs in response to uncertain future climate change challenges. In this study, the validated model was used to simulate the reduction performance of green roofs on urban catchment outflow and assess their cost-effectiveness in response to design storms under climate change scenarios. Results showed that the median runoff volume of urban catchments increas

Discovering environmental management opportunities for infectious disease control.

Climate change and emerging drug resistance make the control of many infectious diseases increasingly challenging and diminish the exclusive reliance on drug treatment as sole solution to the problem. As disease transmission often depends on environmental conditions that can be modified, such modifications may become crucial to risk reduction if we can assess their potential benefit at policy-relevant scales. However, so far, the value of environmental management for this purpose has received little attention. Here, using the parasitic disease of fasciolosis in livestock in the UK as a case st

Impact of forestry on total and methyl-mercury in surface waters: distinguishing effects of logging and site preparation.

Forestry operations can increase the export of mercury (both total and methyl) to surface waters. However, little is known about the relative contribution of different forestry practices. We address this question using a paired-catchment study that distinguishes the effects of site preparation from the antecedent logging. Runoff water from three catchments, two harvested and one untreated control, was sampled biweekly during one year prior to logging, two years after logging, and three years after site preparation. The logging alone did not significantly increase the concentrations of either t

Subtropical gyre expansion causes Southern Ocean salinification contrary to freshening predictions.

The "salty-gets-saltier, fresh-gets-fresher" paradigm predicts that an intensifying hydrological cycle should freshen the climatologically fresh Southern Ocean. Here we show the opposite: sea surface salinity increased at ~0.03 decade-1 across 40-50°S during 2004-2024, most coherently in the Pacific and Atlantic sectors. We attribute this salinification to the poleward expansion of the southern subtropical gyres, which advects saline subtropical water into latitudes of steepest meridional salinity gradient. The Subtropical and Subantarctic Fronts, tracked via the 35 and 34 isohalines, migrate

Global soil moisture data fusion by Triple Collocation Analysis from 2011 to 2018.

Surface Soil Moisture (SSM) information is needed for agricultural water resource management, hydrology and climate analysis applications. Temporal and spatial sampling by the space-borne instruments designed to retrieve SSM is, however, limited by the orbit and sensors of the satellites. We produced a Global Daily-scale Soil Moisture Fusion Dataset (GDSMFD) with 25 km spatial resolution (2011~2018) by applying the Triple Collocation Analysis (TCA) and Linear Weight Fusion (LWF) methods. Using five metrics, the GDSMFD was evaluated against in-situ soil moisture measurements from ten ground obs…

Suspended sediment dynamics during flash floods in two contrasting headwater catchments of the Central High Atlas (Morocco).

Suspended sediment (SS) dynamics in semi-arid Mediterranean mountain catchments provide key insights into soil erosion processes and sediment transfer under flash flood conditions. requiring detailed monitoring of streamflow (Q) and suspended sediment concentration (SSC). The primary aim of this study was to investigate the temporal variability of suspended sediment concentration (SSC) and its relationship with hydrological responses in two representative headwater catchments of the Central High Atlas of Morocco, namely, Imi n Ouarg (7 km2; 1541 m a.s.l.) and Bou Azmou (2.7 km2; 2270 m a.s.l.)

Human alteration of global surface water storage variability.

Knowing the extent of human influence on the global hydrological cycle is essential for the sustainability of freshwater resources on Earth1,2. However, a lack of water level observations for the world's ponds, lakes and reservoirs has limited the quantification of human-managed (reservoir) changes in surface water storage compared to its natural variability3. The global storage variability in surface water bodies and the extent to which it is altered by humans therefore remain unknown. Here we show that 57 per cent of the Earth's seasonal surface water storage variability occurs in human-mana

A new concept for risk analysis relating to the degradation of water reservoirs.

This paper presents a proposal for a procedure by which to analyse the risk of reservoirs being degraded. The body of water assessed for its susceptibility to degradation in line with the proposed procedure is Myczkowce Reservoir, SE Poland. This reservoir has a maximum capacity of ten million m3 and helps provide hydropower, by serving as a surge tank located above the main Solina Reservoir. On the basis of an assessment of its morphometric and hydrological parameters, Myczkowce Reservoir was assigned to the low-resilience category where risk of degradation was concerned. The primary factors

An enhanced runoff model with dual-permeability and discharge-dependent leakage for mining-affected catchments.

Coal mining substantially alters watershed hydrology processes, yet quantitatively disentangling the dominant mechanisms within hydrological models remains challenging. Here, an enhanced Spatiotemporal Variable Source Mixed Runoff model, termed E-SVSMR, was developed to explicitly represent two key mining-induced perturbations: enhanced slope infiltration caused by mining fractures, parameterized through a soil-fissure dual-permeability system with an equivalent saturated hydraulic conductivity, and riverbed leakage, characterized by a nonlinear discharge-dependent function. The physical frame…

Driving factors of colored dissolved organic matter dynamics across a complex urbanized estuary.

The role of estuaries in sourcing and transforming dissolved organic matter - the largest reservoir of organic carbon in the ocean - still presents many unknowns for coastal biogeochemical cycles, and is further complicated by increasing human pressures and a changing climate. Here, we examined the major drivers of colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) dynamics in Long Island Sound (LIS), a heavily urbanized estuary of National Significance with a storied water quality past. A comprehensive new optical dataset, including measurements of CDOM absorption and fluorescence signatures, was integr
