Surface membrane antigen alteration on blood basophils in patients with Hymenoptera venom allergy under immunotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Venom immunotherapy (VIT) provides widespread protection against systemic anaphylactic reactions after a sting of the respective insect. This effect is attributed to a shift from T(H)2 to T(H)1. However, because basophils also produce and release cytokines, such as IL-4 and IL-13, they may be part of the cytokine network. The cytokines may regulate basophilic granulocytes, as suggested by the presence of cytokine receptors IL-2Ralpha, GM-CSFRalpha, IL-1RII, IL-3R, IL-4R, IL-5R, and IL-6R on basophils from nonallergic donors. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to demonstrate

Hymenoptera venom-specific IgE antibodies in post-mortem sera from victims of sudden, unexpected death.

There have been reports of elevated venom-specific IgE levels in post-mortem sera from patients experiencing fatal Hymenoptera stings so we hypothesized that other cases of sudden death may be due to unrecognized sting anaphylaxis. Of 94 sera obtained post mortem from subjects who died unexpectedly during the summer months, 22 (23%) contained elevated levels of IgE antibody to at least one insect venom. The causes of death as determined by autopsy did not differ significantly among patients with or without elevated IgE antibody levels. An identical percentage of seropositivity was noted in 48 …

Species-specific elemental profiles in three hymenoptera species under shared environmental exposure: implications for biomonitoring.

This study compared the elemental composition of worker honey bees (Apis mellifera), German wasps (Vespula germanica), and European hornets … lement uptake rather than environmental heterogeneity. The results demonstrate that closely related hymenopteran species provide distinct biomonitoring signals even under shared environmental exposure, highlighting the importance of species selection and taxon-specific interpretation in insect biomonitoring.

Repellent and insecticidal activities of secondary metabolites from Praxelis clematidea against Solenopsis invicta (Hymenoptera: Formicidae).

Praxelis clematidea is a high-risk invasive species with potent insecticidal and repellent properties. This study isolated and identified its bioactive constituents against the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta. Through bioassay-guided fractionation using a digging-based repellency assay, an active oily mixture (I2-[3]) was obtained, with a minimum repellent effective dose (MRED) of 0.0125 mg/g. Notably, caryophyllene oxide, a major component (22.3%), showed stronger repellency (MRED = 0.00156 mg/g) than DEET (MRED = 0.00625 mg/g). Friedelin (MRED = 0.0625 mg/g), stigmasterol, and 4',5

Antimicrobial Activity of Compounds Isolated from the Nest Material of Crematogaster rogenhoferi (Mayr) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae).

Ants as social insects live in groups, which increases the risk of contagious diseases. In response to the threat of pathogens, ants have evolved a variety of defense mechanisms, including incorporating antimicrobial chemicals into nest material for nest hygiene. Crematogaster rogenhoferi is an arboreal ant, building its nest using plant tissues. It is still unclear how C. rogenhoferi is protected against pathogens in its nest. Two main chemicals, 2,2'-methylenebis[6-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-4-methyl-phenol] (MP) and lup-20(29)-en-3-one (LP), isolated from nest materials of C. rogenhoferi were used

Diagnostic Accuracy of Tests for Hymenoptera Venom Hypersensitivity: A Systematic Review and Bayesian Meta-Analysis Protocol.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hymenoptera venom hypersensitivity is a potentially life-threatening condition that may affect up to 7.5% of adults worldwide and can result in systemic allergic reactions ranging from generalized cutaneous symptoms to severe anaphylaxis. Accurate diagnosis following a systemic sting reaction is essential to guide initiation of venom immunotherapy, a highly effective but resource-intensive intervention. However, the diagnostic performance of commonly used tests, including venom skin testing, serum venom-specific IgE, and component-resolved diagnostics, varies across studie…

The mitochondrial genome and life history of Tomostethus sinofraxini (Hymenoptera: Tenthredinidae), an emerging pest of Fraxinus chinensis.

Tomostethus sinofraxini Wang & Wei (a new name is proposed for Tomostethus fraxini Niu & Wei, 2022: Tomostethus sinofraxini Wang & Wei, nom. nov.), an emerging sawfly pest of the Chinese ash, Fraxinus chinensis, is now endemic to Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, and Shandong provinces. Given the severity of its infestation and the speed of its range expansion, we studied the phylogenetic relationship of T. sinofraxini with other sawfly species and its life history to be better informed for the management strategies. The nearly complete T. sinofraxini mitogenome is 16,169 bp in length and encodes 2 rib

Higher mast cell load decreases the risk of Hymenoptera venom-induced anaphylaxis in patients with mastocytosis.

BACKGROUND: Increased basal serum tryptase (bsT) levels are a well-described risk factor for Hymenoptera venom-induced anaphylaxis (HVAn) in patients allergic to Hymenoptera venom. Increased bsT levels might also indicate the presence of mastocytosis. In this study we evaluated whether the risk of HVAn increases with increasing mast cell load in patients with mastocytosis. METHODS: Consecutive patients with different subtypes of mastocytosis (n = 329) admitted to the University Medical Center Groningen were retrospectively assessed. As markers for mast cell load, levels of both bsT and the ur…

In vivo and in vitro activity of venom from the endoparasitic wasp Pimpla turionellae (L.) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae).

The biological activity of venom from Pimpla turionellae L. (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) was examined in vivo toward larvae and pupae of Galleriae mellonella L. (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), and in vitro toward bacterial and fungal cultures, as well as cultured insect cells. Pupae of G. mellonella were far more susceptible to the venom than larvae. At low doses of venom [0.1 venom reservoir equivalents (VRE)], pupal abdominal mobility was inhibited within 30 min, and by 24 h, all pupae injected with venom concentrations >0.5 VRE were completely paralyzed. These same doses of venom resulted in an i…

[The role of insects (Blattodea, Diptera, and Hymenoptera) as possible mechanical vectors of helminths in the domiciliary and peridomiciliary environment].

Helminths can be transmitted to human beings in several ways, but little attention has been given to vector or mechanical transmission of infective forms by insects. The present study surveys the helminth species present in three orders of insects that coexist in proximity with the human environment. A total of 700 insects (54 Blattodea, 275 Diptera, and 371 Hymenoptera) were collected and examined externally and individually. In the Blattodea order, only specimens of Periplaneta americana were collected, and 58.3% were carrying the following helminth forms: Oxyuridae eggs (36.4%), Ascaridae e…

Light and electron microscopic study of the hindgut of the ant (Formica nigricans, hymenoptera): II. Structure of the rectum.

The rectum of the ant Formica nigricans is composed of six ovoid rectal papillae inserted into a rectal pouch. The wall of the rectal pouch is made up of a flat epithelium of simple rectal cells lined by cuticle, and surrounded by a circular muscle layer. Each rectal papilla is comprised by a simple columnar epithelium of principal cells facing the lumen, and a simple cuboid epithelium of secondary cells towards the hemolymph; a group of 20-25 slender junctional cells lies laterally between both epithelia enclosing an intrapapillar sinus. The muscle layer of the rectal wall also surrounds the

Development of commercial-scale hydrogel-based management systems for Formica aerata (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in California vineyards.

The mealybug, Planococcus ficus (Signoret), is a direct pest of grapevines in California. It causes damage by feeding on plant sap, vectoring viral pathogens, and contaminating table grape clusters before harvest. Natural control of this mealybug by parasitoids and predators is disrupted by the presence of sugar-feeding ants, including Formica aerata Francoeur, which defend mealybugs from these natural enemies. We developed a system to manage F. aerata using ultra-low concentrations of toxicants in a 1:4 sucrose: water solution, imbibed into polyacrylamide hydrogels. We began with a series of

Age-Dependent Labor Division and Behavioral Characteristics in Vespa velutina nigrithorax (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) Under Laboratory Conditions.

Eusocial insects maintain their colonies through diverse cooperative tasks, yet patterns among these behaviors remain poorly understood in hornets. To examine temporal polyethism, we observed a Vespa velutina nigrithorax colony under controlled laboratory conditions (26 °C, 60% RH). Workers were categorized into 5-day cohorts and monitored across five tasks: nest hygiene, prey foraging and first pellet handling, second pellet handling, brood feeding, and foraging for nest materials. Adult emergence occurred in three synchronized cohorts. Workers began to transition to tasks outside of the nest

Toxicological assessment of cyfluthrin, atrazine, and prothioconazole: LD50 determination in European bumblebee, Bombus terrestris (Hymenoptera: Apidae).

Bumblebees are efficient pollinators of fruits and vegetables in greenhouses and field crops. However, pesticide use in agricultural landscapes is causing a sharp decline in pollinating insect populations. The impact of pesticides on bumblebee health is a growing concern. Cyfluthrin, atrazine, and prothioconazole are 3 commonly used pesticides in agricultural production. Although the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has published the acute median lethal dose (LD50) data for these 3 pesticides on Apis mellifera honey bee, there is still a lack of LD50 data for non-Apis be
