Associations between serum leptin levels, hyperlipidemia, and cholelithiasis in dogs.

Leptin and its receptor play several physiological roles in the canine gallbladder, and the dysregulation of leptin might play a role in the pathogenesis of gallbladder diseases such as gallbladder mucocele. Previous studies revealed a positive association between hyperlipidemia and gallstones in humans. However, the latter is still unclear in dogs with cholelithiasis. In this study, we examined the differences in leptin, leptin receptor, total cholesterol, and triglyceride levels between healthy dogs and dogs with cholelithiasis, and evaluated the correlation between leptin and hyperlipidemia

Potential Role of Thyroid Receptor β Agonists in the Treatment of Hyperlipidemia.

Thyroid hormones have important effects on cellular development, growth, and metabolism and are necessary for the healthy function of almost all tissues. Hyperthyroid patients with excess thyroid hormone levels experience tachycardia, fatigue, muscle wasting, and osteoporosis. However, although high thyroid hormone levels have adverse effects, efforts have been made to harness the beneficial effects, such as reduced serum low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels, elevated basal metabolic rate, and weight loss. Thyroid hormones interact with nuclear thyroid hormone receptors (TRs), and

Efficacy of Berberine Alone and in Combination for the Treatment of Hyperlipidemia: A Systematic Review.

The objective of this review is to identify, summarize, and evaluate clinical trials of berberine for the treatment of hyperlipidemia and other dyslipidemias. A literature search for randomized, controlled trials of berberine that assessed at least 2 lipid values as endpoints resulted in identification of 12 articles that met criteria. The majority of evaluated articles consistently suggest that berberine has a beneficial effect on low-density lipoprotein (reductions ranging from approximately 20 to 50 mg/dL) and triglycerides (reductions ranging from approximately 25 to 55 mg/dL). Common stud

Apoc2 loss-of-function zebrafish mutant as a genetic model of hyperlipidemia.

Apolipoprotein C-II (APOC2) is an obligatory activator of lipoprotein lipase. Human patients with APOC2 deficiency display severe hypertriglyceridemia while consuming a normal diet, often manifesting xanthomas, lipemia retinalis and pancreatitis. Hypertriglyceridemia is also an important risk factor for development of cardiovascular disease. Animal models to study hypertriglyceridemia are limited, with no Apoc2-knockout mouse reported. To develop a genetic model of hypertriglyceridemia, we generated an apoc2 mutant zebrafish characterized by the loss of Apoc2 function. apoc2 mutants show decre

Relationship of ethnicity and body mass index with the development of hypertension and hyperlipidemia.

OBJECTIVES: Studies primarily using prevalence data suggest the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and risk factors for cardiovascular disease may vary by ethnicity. The objective of this study was to examine longitudinally the associations of BMI and ethnicity with transitions from a baseline state without evidence of chronic disease to the onset of hypertension, hyperlipidemia, or both. DESIGN: The study population comprised members of a large insurer in Hawaii. Individuals were eligible if continuously enrolled for at least one year without evidence of major chronic disease. Analys

Periodontal status and hyperlipidemia: statin users versus non-users.

BACKGROUND: The association between serum lipids and periodontal disease has been studied predominantly in patients with chronic periodontitis with limited data available regarding periodontal status of patients with hyperlipidemia. Meanwhile, the impact of statins on the periodontal health of the population also remains largely underexplored. This study aims to assess the periodontal status among patients with hyperlipidemia and users of statins. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 94 patients with hyperlipidemia (50 receiving statins and 44 receiving non-pharmacologic therapy) and 46 co

Regulation of platelet function by class B scavenger receptors in hyperlipidemia.

Platelets constitutively express class B scavenger receptors CD36 and SR-BI, 2 closely related pattern recognition receptors best known for their roles in lipoprotein and lipid metabolism. The biological role of scavenger receptors in platelets is poorly understood. However, in vitro and in vivo data suggest that class B scavenger receptors modulate platelet function and contribute significantly to thrombosis by sensing pathological or physiological ligands, inducing prothrombotic signaling, and increasing platelet reactivity. Platelet CD36 recognizes a novel family of endogenous oxidized chol

Prevalence and treatment of hyperlipidemia in patients with chronic hepatitis C infection.

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic hepatitis C (HCV) infection can also have hyperlipidemia. Glucose intolerance has been associated with HCV infection and treating hyperlipidemia in this and other high-risk groups is warranted. We hypothesized that hyperlipidemia is common in patients with hepatitis C and that it is under-treated for fear of worsening liver function. DESIGN: From the Stratton Veterans Affairs Medical Center computerized database, we collected information on patients with HCV infection enrolled in hepatology clinic. We collected information on age, sex, duration of HCV infecti

Effects of diet and gemfibrozil on posttransplant hyperlipidemia in renal transplant recipients.

BACKGROUND: Posttransplant hyperlipidemia increases cardiovascular morbidity and mortality rate in renal transplant recipients. It also leads to graft loss due to atherosclerosis and glomerular damage. It is essential to control hyperlipidemia in renal transplant recipients to prevent these events. METHODS: In our study, we determined lipid profiles in 59 renal transplant recipients. Twenty of the recipients had hyperlipidemia; 9 had type IV, and 11 had type II hyperlipoproteinemia. Randomly selected 14 of 20 hyperlipidemic patients consisted of the diet group and were treated with American p

Hypertension and hyperlipidemia management in patients treated at community health centers.

OBJECTIVE: Community health centers (HCs) provide care for millions of medically underserved Americans with disproportionate burdens of hypertension and hyperlipidemia. For both conditions, treatment guidelines recently became more stringent and quality improvement (QI) efforts have intensified. We assessed hypertension and hyperlipidemia management in HCs during this time of guideline revision and increased QI efforts. DESIGN: Cross-sectional chart review. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Eleven Midwestern HCs for 2000 and 9 for 2002 provided audit data from 2,976 randomly chosen patients with hyper

Postprandial hyperglycemia/hyperlipidemia (postprandial dysmetabolism) is a cardiovascular risk factor.

Epidemiologic data indicate that a postprandial state characterized by abnormally increased levels of glucose and lipids (also referred to as postprandial dysmetabolism) is an independent predictor of future cardiovascular events, even in nondiabetic subjects. The cardiovascular toxicity of postprandial dysmetabolism is mediated by oxidant stress, which is directly proportional to the increase in glucose after a meal. This transient increase in free radicals acutely triggers inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, hypercoagulability, sympathetic hyperactivity, and a cascade of other atherogenic

Up-regulation of CD36/FAT in preadipocytes in familial combined hyperlipidemia.

Familial combined hyperlipidemia (FCHL) shows many features of the metabolic syndrome. The strong genetic component makes it an excellent model to study the genetic background of metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance. Adipose tissue is believed to contribute to, or even underlie, the FCHL phenotype and is an interesting target tissue for gene expression studies. However, interpretation of adipose tissue gene expression experiments is complex since expression differences cannot only arise as a direct consequence of a genetic trait, but may also reflect an adaptation to metabolic influences

An ounce of prevention. Drugs used to treat hyperlipidemia (Part 2).

For more than a century, coronary heart disease (CHD) has been the number one cause of death in the United States. Today, we know that although treatment of CHD may reduce some of those deaths, it is the prevention that is the real answer to eliminating this national scourge. The key to prevention lies in identifying those persons who are at risk for developing CHD and reducing the primary risk factor--hyperlipidemia. Preventing or controlling hyperlipidemia involves therapeutic lifestyle changes (TLC) and antilipidemic medications. In part 1, two useful medications--niacin and fibric acid der

Undertreatment of hyperlipidemia in a cohort of United States kidney dialysis patients.

BACKGROUND: Application of national guidelines regarding cardiovascular disease risk reduction to kidney dialysis patients is complicated by the conflicting observations that dialysis patients have a high risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), but dialysis patients with higher serum cholesterol have lower mortality rates. Actual treatment patterns of hyperlipidemia are not well studied. METHODS: We assessed the prevalence, treatment and control of hyperlipidemia in this high-risk patient population from 1995 - 1998. We measured low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, treatment w

[HIV-infection, HAART (highly-active antiretroviral therapy) and hyperlipidemia].

HISTORY AND ADMISSION FINDINGS: A 42-year-old man with long-standing HIV-infection (CDC C3) and multiple treatment failures was seen for follow-up 6 months after starting a new HAART (zidovudine, efavirenz, indinavir, ritonavir). The medical history is remarkable for a hypersensitivity reaction to abacavir, past smoking (10 pack years) and a family history of coronary heart disease of the patient's mother. Physical examination revealed discrete signs of lipoatrophy of the face, arms and legs, but no lipoaccumulation (hip-waist ratio 0.94; body mass index 22 kg/m2). Blood pressure measured 156/
