Ethanol Induces Sedation and Hypnosis via Inhibiting Histamine Release in Mice.

Ethanol is one of the most highly abused psychoactive compounds worldwide and induces sedation and hypnosis. The histaminergic system is involved in the regulation of sleep/wake function and is a crucial player in promoting wakefulness. To explore the role and mechanism of the histaminergic system in ethanol-induced sedation and hypnosis, we recorded locomotor activity (LMA) and electroencephalography (EEG)/electromyography (EMG) in mice using an infrared ray passive sensor recording system and an EEG/EMG recording system, respectively, after administration of ethanol. In vivo microdialysis co…

Hypnosis aided fixed role therapy for social phobia: a case report.

This case study details how hypnosis aided fixed role therapy (HAFRT) was employed in the successful treatment of a case of social phobia with a history of refractory outcomes to previous therapy trials. The treatment consisted of 10 office sessions, scheduled every two weeks, of HAFRT along with twice a day self-hypnotic sessions where the patient performed multiple visualization rehearsals of the vignettes that were successfully mastered in hypnosis during office visits. The results indicated that this patient was able to engage in social and professional affairs that were impossible prior t…

Augmenting the hypnotic imagination: practical applications of artificial intelligence for clinical hypnosis.

Artificial intelligence (AI), particularly large language models (LLMs), offers clinical hypnotists a powerful and immediately accessible set of tools for enhancing practice. Despite growing interest at the intersection of AI and mental health care, virtually no practical guidance exists for clinicians seeking to integrate AI into hypnotherapy. This article addresses that gap. Written by practicing clinicians in active engagement with an AI system, it provides concrete, demystified, and clinically grounded examples of how AI can augment clinical hypnosis: from generating individualized hypnoti…

The efficacy of clinical hypnosis in treating NREM and REM parasomnias: A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Clinical hypnosis has shown some benefit for non-rapid eye movement (NREM) parasomnias; however, data regarding its effectiveness across the full spectrum of parasomnia subtypes, particularly rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD), remain limited. We evaluated clinical outcomes of hypnosis for parasomnias treated at a quaternary sleep center. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients referred for clinical hypnosis for parasomnia management. Demographic characteristics, parasomnia subtype, polysomnographic data, and concurrent medication use wer…

Clinical Hypnosis and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Hot Flashes: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Hot flashes can be a prevalent issue for postmenopausal women, but traditional treatments such as hormone therapy can have adverse side effects. Recommended psychotherapies for managing hot flashes include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and clinical hypnosis, but an in-depth review comparing the efficacy of both treatments is warranted. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present scoping review was to assess the clinical significance and efficacy of symptom reduction of CBT and clinical hypnosis as treatments of hot flashes. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Peer-reviewed primary studies were inc…

Mind-Manifesting Hypnosis: Phenomenological Similarities and Differences in Hypnotic and Psychedelic Contexts.

In the 1970s, researchers and theoreticians of states of consciousness jointly discussed hypnosis and psychedelic alterations of consciousness, but recent research has mostly kept these topics apart. This paper discusses the similarities and differences of hypnosis and psychedelic alterations of consciousness, stressing that states of consciousness should not be defined by their preceding contexts. Predictors of positive responses to psychedelics (e.g. absorption and openness to experience) also predict hypnotic responsiveness. Most experiential changes (e.g. changes in bodily sensations and i…

Clinical Hypnosis for Chronic Illnesses: A Scoping Review of Randomized Controlled Trials.

Chronic illnesses require a multifaceted treatment approach, and clinical hypnosis has shown promise as a complementary intervention. This scoping review maps the evidence on clinical hypnosis for chronic illness management, focusing on randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines and scoping review framework by Arksey and O'Malley's (2005), a systematic search in PubMed and Scopus identified 16 RCTs involving adults with conditions such as fibromyalgia, cancer, obesity, and heart disease. Studies were conducted primarily in Europe and the USA, with sample sizes ranging…

An Identification Method for Road Hypnosis Based on the Fusion of Human Life Parameters.

A driver in road hypnosis has two different types of characteristics. One is the external characteristics, which are distinct and can be directly observed. The other is internal characteristics, which are indistinctive and cannot be directly observed. The eye movement characteristic, as a distinct external characteristic, is one of the typical characteristics of road hypnosis identification. The electroencephalogram (EEG) characteristic, as an internal feature, is a golden parameter of drivers' life identification. This paper proposes an identification method for road hypnosis based on the fus…

Adjunctive use of hypnosis for clinical pain: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Systematic reviews suggest that stand-alone hypnotic suggestions may improve pain outcomes compared with no treatment, waitlist, or usual care. However, in clinical practice, hypnosis is often provided adjunctively with other interventions, which might have different effects than those reported in previous reviews. This systematic review aimed to summarize the analgesic effects of adjunctive hypnosis in adults with clinical pain. Seven databases (MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, Emcare, SCOPUS, CENTRAL, Cochrane) were searched up to January 2024. Randomised controlled trials comparing the analgesic …

Use of the 49word protocol (alert hypnosis) to reduce anxiety: a case series.

David Wark's latest iteration of alert hypnosis, the "49word protocol," reduces performance anxiety. Several case studies have demonstrated improvements in the behavioral responses of subjects using this technique. This case series focuses on the more immediate emotional impact, such as the reported reduction in anxiety, on subjects who have benefited from David Wark's "49word protocol." In this study, we compare the benefits of the "49word protocol" to those of the mindfulness protocol. We compared the anxiety-reducing elements of alert hypnosis (49word protocol) and a mindfulness technique (…

Current Practices, Experiences, and Views in Clinical Hypnosis: Findings of an International Survey.

An online survey of 691 clinicians who use hypnosis was conducted in 31 countries to gain a broad real-world picture of current practices, views, and experiences in clinical hypnosis. Among 36 common clinical uses, stress reduction, wellbeing and self-esteem-enhancement, surgery preparations, anxiety interventions, mindfulness facilitation, and labor and childbirth applications were the most frequently rated as highly effective (each by ≥70% of raters) in the clinicians' own experience. Adverse hypnosis-associated effects had been encountered by 55% of clinicians but were generally short-lived…

Palliative hypnosis approaches in the symptomatic treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a rare, incurable, and ultimately fatal, devastating, progressive degenerative neurologic disease. It causes upheaval in the lives of patients and family caregivers alike. Palliative care can play an important supportive role in the care of patients and families dealing with the devastation of this illness. Clinical hypnosis has demonstrated benefits in treating the symptoms associated with severe chronic illness. There are, however, few studies looking at the benefits of clinical hypnosis in treating the symptom burden of ALS. This article describes pall…

Redefining hypnosis: A narrative review of theories to move towards an integrative model.

Hypnosis is an ancient mind-body intervention that has regained interest with the surge of research in the last decade documenting its clinical validity. Yet, theoretical controversies and misconceptions prevail among theorists, clinicians, and the general public, impeding the understanding, acceptance, replication, and use of hypnosis. Providing adequate information, which dispels misconceptions and promotes more balanced views, is warranted to facilitate the implementation and adoption of hypnosis in clinical and research settings. This review re-examines the conceptualisation of hypnosis th…
