Passive transfer of antibodies of maternal origin from blood to cerebrospinal fluid in infants.

The demonstration that specific IgM antibodies are present in the serum of infants is useful in the diagnosis of several congenital infections. However, it is less certain whether the detection of antibodies in cerebrospinal fluid (c.s.f.) of infants indicates congenital infection of the central nervous system, because the origins of such antibodies have not been established. In the present study diphtheria and tetanus antitoxins of maternal origin have been detected both in the serum and in the c.s.f. of infants. These observations suggest that an important source of immunoglobulins in c.s.f.

Biological mechanisms of vertical human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) transmission.

In the absence of interventions, 30-45% of exposed infants acquire human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) through mother-to-child transmission. It remains unclear why some infants become infected while others do not, despite significant exposure to HIV-1 in utero, during delivery and while breastfeeding. Here we discuss the correlates of vertical transmission with an emphasis on factors that increase maternal HIV-1 levels, either systemically or locally in genital secretions and breast milk. Immune responses may influence maternal viral load, and data suggest that maternal neutralising an

Paediatric infections: prevention of transmission and disease--implications for adults.

Congenital and neonatal viral infections usually display their acute manifestations in highly recognisable ways, for example, congenital rubella, cytomegalovirus (CMV), varicella, human immunodeficiency (HIV) and herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection. By contrast, congenital hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection may go undetected for years. Some of these are preventable, but what is not immediately apparent is that the long-term consequences are being prevented as well. The long-term consequences of congenital and neonatal infections include endocrine, immunological and cardiovascular disease, deaf

[Immunopathology of Schistosoma mansoni bilharziasis].

Immunological manifestations during S. mansoni bilharziasis are present at all stages of the disease and their mechanisms begin to be well known: --delayed hypersensitivity and cell mediation immunity, responsible for the formation of bilharzial granuloma; --synthesis of various antibodies. Beside their diagnostic interest, they might participate in the immunological tolerance as well as in the processing of circulating immune complex; --various immunizing mechanisms making schistosomes able to escape hostile reactions of their host, and limiting infestation to a level acceptable for both the

Genital Dysbiosis and Different Systemic Immune Responses Based on the Trimester of Pregnancy in SARS-CoV-2 Infection.

Respiratory infections are common in pregnancy with conflicting evidence supporting their association with neonatal congenital anomalies, especially during the first trimester. We profiled cytokine and chemokine systemic responses in 242 pregnant women and their newborns after SARS-CoV-2 infection, acquired in different trimesters. Also, we tested transplacental IgG passage and maternal vaginal-rectal microbiomes. IgG transplacental passage was evident, especially with infection acquired in the first trimester. G-CSF concentration-involved in immune cell recruitment-decreased in infected women

Natural history and control of perinatally acquired hepatitis B virus infection.

Maternal-infant transmission of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is estimated to account for 40-50% of HBV carriers in Chinese populations, but is uncommon among other ethnic groups. The high frequency of maternal-infant transmission among Chinese populations is related to the high prevalence of carrier mothers with replicative HBV infection. The natural course of perinatally acquired HBV infection consists of three phases: an initial phase of immune tolerance followed by a phase of immune clearance and then a non-replicative phase. The initial phase of immune tolerance which may last for sev

Immunization with Streptococcus suis bacterin plus recombinant Sao protein in sows conveys passive immunity to their piglets.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus suis (S. suis) causes arthritis, meningitis, septicemia, and sudden death in pigs and is also an zoonotic agent for humans. The present study demonstrated that immunization with recombinant Sao-L (surface antigen one-L, rSao-L) protein from a strain of S. suis serotype 2 in pigs was able to increase cross-serotype protection against S. suis serotype 1 and 2 challenge. Since weaning piglets are more susceptible to S. suis infections due to the stresses associated with weaning, prepartum immunization in sows may convey passive immunity to piglets and provide protection.

Influence of high titers of maternal antibody on the serologic response of infants to diphtheria vaccination at three, five and twelve months of age.

Diphtheria antitoxin was determined in serum from 44 pregnant women, of whom 26 had received one injection of diphtheria toxoid during pregnancy. Their infants were vaccinated with a combined diphtheria-tetanus vaccine at 3, 5 and 12 months of age. This vaccination schedule has been used in Sweden since 1986, replacing the old schedule of vaccination at 3, 4.5 and 6 months of age originally designed for diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine, which had not been used after cessation of general vaccination against pertussis in 1979. Serum samples from the infants were obtained at 3, 7 and 18 month

Life-phase specific induction and expression of rapid expulsion in rats suckling Trichinella spiralis-infected dams.

Rat dams infected with 1000 Trichinella spiralis muscle larvae, 4 weeks prior to breeding, provided their suckling offspring with immunity to challenge with 200 muscle larvae at 2 weeks of age. The immunity was expressed in the elimination of 75-99% of the challenge dose within 24 hr. The intestinal worm burden did not decline significantly after the initial expulsion. Infected dams continued to protect their offspring during three breeding cycles, for as long as 26 weeks after infection. Immunity was conferred upon pups by dams that had been selectively immunized with the parenteral phase of

[The nutritional immunodeficiency syndrome].

There is a strong relationship between nutritional status and resistance to infection. This relationship must receive attention more especially as human being is young. Newborns and infants have some immunological immaturity in regard to systemic immunity as well as local (particularly intestinal), immune defense. Malnutrition is an aggravating factor vis a vis such an immunodeficiency. It modifies the regulating activities of the different lymphocyte populations, of the macrophages, of the complementary system. These disorders are bound to energy, proteins, vitamins and mineral deficiencies.

Host defenses in experimental scrub typhus: role of cellular immunity in heterologous protection.

The relative contributions of cellular and humoral immunity in scrub typhus infections were studied in inbred mice employing paired strains of Rickettsia tsutsugamushi differing in virulence. An infectious dose (100 MID50) of the less virulent Gilliam strain resulted in heterologous immune protection against an otherwise lethal challenge (1,000 MLD50) of the virulent Karp strain. Partial heterologous protection against lethal Karp challenge was observed in animals preimmunized with the Gilliam strain as early as 3 days prior to challenge, whereas complete protection against illness and death e

Enhancement of chicken hemagglutinin response by thymocytes.

Antigen responsive cells, detectable with the cell transfer antibody assay, are abundant in the blood and spleen of chickens after immunization. In experiments where serial dilutions of donor immunocyte-antigen mixture were cultured in host embryos, each two-fold dilution of the mixture resulted in approximately a four-fold reduction in hemagglutinin output. When higher than normal concentrations of donor buffy coat were used, however, serial dilutions resulted in antibody output that was more directly proportional. The overall dose-response curve of relative donor cell number to antibody prod

Maternal immunity and prevention of congenital cytomegalovirus infection.

CONTEXT: Vaccine development to prevent congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection has been impeded by the uncertainty over whether maternal immunity protects the fetus. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the presence of maternal antibodies to CMV significantly reduces the risk of congenital CMV infection in future pregnancies. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Cohort study of 3461 multiparous women from a population with a high rate of congenital CMV infection who delivered newborns screened for congenital CMV infection between 1993 and 1998, and whose cord serum specimen from a previous deli

Practical aspects of estimation of optimal time for vaccination of chicken against IBD with use of "Deventer formula".

One of the most commonly applied vaccination strategies against chicken infectious bursal disease (IBD) is the use of live vaccines at the optimal time estimated with the use of Deventer formula. The present study investigated the impact of different factors on maternally derived antibodies decline and therefore on the vaccination schedule against IBD. Our results suggest that blood collection from birds older than 3 days is more reliable in order to estimate the optimal date for IBD vaccination, due to disturbances in yolk sac resorption early after hatch.

Antibacterial resistance in mice infected with Mycobacterium lepraemurium.

The differences in susceptibility among C57Bl/6, DBA/2 mice and their F1 hybrids to infections with M. lepraemurium were shown to depend upon the route of infection and size of the inoculum. A method was developed to measure the ability of lymphocytes obtained from M. lepraemurium-infected donors to effect adoptive immunization of syngeneic naive mice against infection with M. tuberculosis. This required sublethal irradiation of recipient mice prior to cell transfer and bacterial challenge. Using this method, it was found that mice infected subcutaneously generated antituberculous immune mecha

A comparison of alternate immunization regimes for measles in vaccinated populations.

Infants today lose maternal measles antibody sooner than in the past. This is related to demographic changes in maternal immunization. Data for rates of decay of maternal antibody and seroconversion after measles vaccination for infants born to naturally immune (Group 1) or vaccinated (Group 2) mothers have been used to evaluate two vaccination schedules: Regime 1, measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) at 1 year of age and Regime 2, monovalent measles at 6 months followed by MMR at 15 months of age. Regime 2 costs less because MMR can be administered at 15 months with the last pentavalent booster. Month

Protective immunity to Nippostrongylus brasiliensis in the rat. 3. Modulation of worm acetylcholinesterase by antibodies.

Antibodies to Nippostrongylus brasiliensis acetylcholinesterase were found in sera from infected rats and in one pooled sample were associated with IgG1. Antibodies were formed against all three isoenzymes of worm acetylcholinesterase and antisera taken from animals which had experienced multiple infections had the strongest activity, in particular to isoenzyme A. No antibodies were found against the worms' non-specific esterases, aminopeptidases or acid phosphatases. It appeared that acetylcholinesterase production by the worms was increased in the presence of antibodies and decreased in thei
