Scabies Itch.

Itch is the cardinal symptom of scabies, present in more than 90% of the cases, generalized and intense, worsening at night, and often sparing the head. The primary complications of the itch in scabies are secondary bacterial infections and psychosocial issues leading to impairment on life quality. Currently, there are no specific data analyzing mechanisms of the itch in scabies, but the latest progress made in the understanding of host-mite interactions may help to improve understanding. Management of itch in scabies consists primarily of the treatment of the mite infestation, but sometimes t

Lipolytic activity of Staphylococcus aureus strains from disseminated and localized infections.

Lipase production of 425 S. aureus strains isolated from patients with different clinical diagnoses and healthy carriers were measured by a specific method, using emulsified trioleoylglycerol substrate. Strains isolated from patients with septicemia showed significantly higher lipase activity than osteomyelitis strains (p = 0.011), impetigo strains (p = 0.002) and strains isolated from healthy relatives of patients with recurrent furunculosis (p = 0.019). Recurrent furunculosis and pyomyositis strains had significantly higher (p = 0.002 and 0.032, respectively) lipase activity than septicemia …

Sleep disturbance and atopic dermatitis: A bidirectional relationship?

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is one of the most common pediatric dermatologic disorders and is associated with an increased risk of recurrent bacterial and viral cutaneous infections, such as impetigo, the most common bacterial infection in children. AD may impair patient quality of life in a number of ways, one of which is its impact on sleep. The way that the condition affects sleep has not yet been fully elucidated; it is clear that the symptoms of the disease such as pruritus and scratching can affect sleep but other factors, such as changes in the immunological system related to the disease can…

A human IgG receptor of group A streptococci is associated with tissue site of infection and streptococcal class.

The distribution of receptors for immunoglobulins of several different isotypes was examined for group A streptococcal isolates derived from skin and nasopharyngeal sites. Although human IgG-Fc receptor activity was a variable property of group A streptococci, found among 61% of all isolates tested, it was largely restricted to well-defined subpopulations. Human IgG-binding activity was observed among nearly all impetigo isolates examined. In addition, the expression of the class II M protein molecule (one of two broad antigenic classes of the major virulence factor) and opacity factor (a lipo…

The impact of ivermectin, diethylcarbamazine citrate, and albendazole mass drug administration on the prevalence of scabies and soil-transmitted helminths in school-aged children in three municipalities in Timor-Leste: a before-after assessment.

BACKGROUND: Integrated programmes that use combination mass drug administration (MDA) might improve control of multiple neglected tropical diseases simultaneously. We investigated the impact of Timor-Leste's national ivermectin, diethylcarbamazine citrate, and albendazole MDA, for lymphatic filariasis elimination and soil-transmitted helminth (STH) control, on scabies, impetigo, and STH infections. METHODS: We did a before-after study in six primary schools across three municipalities in Timor-Leste (urban [Dili], semi-urban [Ermera], and rural [Manufahi]) before (April 23 to May 11, 2019) an…

Prospective Surveillance of Primary Healthcare Presentations for Scabies and Bacterial Skin Infections in Fiji, 2018-2019.

Scabies, impetigo, and other skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) are highly prevalent in many tropical, low-middle income settings, but information regarding their burden of disease is scarce. We conducted surveillance of presentations of scabies and SSTIs, including impetigo, abscesses, cellulitis, and severe SSTI, to primary health facilities in Fiji. We established a monthly reporting system over the course of 50 weeks (July 2018-June 2019) for scabies and SSTIs at all 42 public primary health facilities in the Northern Division of Fiji (population, ≈131,914). For each case, information…

Adverse and beneficial secondary effects of mass treatment with azithromycin to eliminate blindness due to trachoma in Nepal.

Mass administration of azithromycin to eliminate blindness due to trachoma has raised concerns regarding the emergence of antimicrobial resistance. During 2000, we compared the antimicrobial resistance of nasopharyngeal pneumococcal isolates recovered from and the prevalence of impetigo, respiratory symptoms, and diarrhea among 458 children in Nepal before and after mass administration of azithromycin. No azithromycin-resistant pneumococci were isolated except from 4.3% of children who had received azithromycin during 2 previous mass treatments (P<.001). There were decreases in the prevalence …

Skin and wound infections: an overview.

Skin infections are common and may be caused by bacteria, fungi or viruses. Breaks in the skin integrity, particularly those that inoculate pathogens into the dermis, frequently cause or exacerbate skin infections. Bacterial skin infections caused by corynebacteria include erythrasma, trichomycosis axillaris and pitted keratolysis. Staphylococci may cause impetigo, ecthyma and folliculitis. Streptococcal skin infections include impetigo and erysipelas. Human papillomavirus skin infections present as several different types of warts, depending on the surface infected and its relative moisture, …

New therapeutic applications of ozenoxacin in superficial skin infections.

In recent years, the incidence of community- acquired methicillin-resistant S. aureus skin infections (CA-MARSA) has increased in pediatric population without associated risk factors. Ozenoxacin 10mg/g is a topical quinolone that has shown high activity on strains of S. aureus, S. pyogenes and other Gram-positive bacteria sensitive and resistant to methicillin, other quinolones, mupirocin and fusidic acid. Ozenoxacin 10mg/g cream was applied twice a day for 5 days in pediatric patients with superficial skin infections other than non-bullous impetigo where oral antibiotics were not needed. Ther…

Toxin involvement in staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome.

The production of staphylococcal exfoliative toxin A (ETA) and toxin B (ETB), toxic shock syndrome toxin (TSST-1), and enterotoxins A-E was analyzed in 60 Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from children with scalded skin syndrome (15 with generalized exfoliative syndrome, 28 with bullous impetigo, and 17 with staphylococcal scarlet fever). All strains isolated from patients with generalized exfoliative syndrome or bullous impetigo produced ETA and/or ETB and caused a Nikolsky's sign when injected subcutaneously into newborn mice. In contrast, exfoliative toxin was detected in an S. aureus…

Skin and soft tissue infection.

Abstract. Normal skin is heavily colonized by bacterial flora. The most common are the various nonpathogenic gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus epidermidis (coagulase-negative). Skin and soft tissue infections are usually caused by Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Streptococcus pyogenes. This article discusses common and some not so common bacterial skin infections, including impetigo, folliculitis, furncles and carbuncles, cellulitis and erysipelas, gangrenous cellulitis, staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome and scarlet fever. Impetigo and ecthyma are common bacterial infectio…
