The role of intraoperative monitoring of oculomotor and trochlear nuclei -safe entry zone to tegmental lesions.

OBJECTIVE: A safe entry zone to tegmental lesions was identified based on intraoperative electrophysiological findings, the compound muscle action potentials (CMAP) from the extraocular muscles, and anatomic considerations. This entry zone is bordered caudally by the intramesencephalic path of the trochlear, laterally by the spinothalamic tract, and rostrally by the caudal margin of the brachium of the superior colliculus. METHODS: Four intrinsic midbrain lesions were operated upon via the safe entry zone using the infratentorial paramedian supracerebellar approach. All lesions involved the t

Characterization of experimental cerebral malaria by volumetric MRI A comparative study across the sexes.

Cerebral malaria (CM), a potentially lethal neurological complication of the infection by Plasmodium falciparum, affects mostly the pediatric population under 5 years old in sub-Saharan Africa. This clinical syndrome is characterized on anatomical brain imaging by microhemorrhages, parenchymal lesions and brain edema. Epidemiological studies based on sex or gender are rare and do not allow to draw any conclusions on a possible sexual dimorphism in CM. However, some regional data and genetic studies suggest a possible influence of sex on the susceptibility to this clinical syndrome and complica

Convergence of monosynaptic inputs from neurons in the brainstem and forebrain on parabrachial neurons that project to the paraventricular nucleus of the thalamus.

The paraventricular nucleus of the thalamus (PVT) projects to areas of the forebrain involved in regulating behavior. Homeostatic challenges … included the reticular formation; periaqueductal gray (PAG); nucleus cuneiformis; and superior and inferior colliculi. Distinctive clusters of input cells to LPB-PVT projecting neurons were also found in the dorsolateral bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BSTDL) and the lateral central nucleus of the amygdala (CeL). Anterograde viral tracing demonstrates that LPB …

The pharmacology of N-carbamoyl-2-(2,6-dichlorophenyl)acetamidine hydrochloride (LON-954) a new tremorogenic agent.

The most potent member, N-carbamoyl-2-(2,6-dichlorop … rats indicated that although tremor is not of cortical origin, it arises in an area rostral to the inferior colliculi. The mechanism underlying the tremor appears to involve dopaminergic pathways, since the action of LON-954 was antagonised by L-dopa and apomorphine and potentiated by pimozide. Atropine and carbachol were without effect. It is suggested that LON-95 …

A Subcortical Model for Auditory Forward Masking with Efferent Control of Cochlear Gain.

Previous physiological and psychophysical studies have explored whether feedback to the cochlea from the efferent system influences forward masking. The present work proposes that the limited growth-of-masking (GOM) observed in auditory nerve (AN) fibers may have been misunderstood; namely, that this limitation may be due to the influence of anesthesia on the efferent system. Building on the premise that the unanesthetized AN may exhibit GOM similar to more central nuclei, the present computational modeling study demonstrates that feedback from the medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferents may cont

Prepulse inhibition of the acoustic startle reflex impairment by 5-HT2A receptor activation in the inferior colliculus is prevented by GABAA receptor blockade in the pedunculopontine tegmental nucleus.

The relationship between serotonin dysfunction and schizophrenia commenced with the discovery of the effects of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) that has high affinity for 5-HT2A receptors. Activation of these receptors produces perceptual and behavioural changes such as illusions, visual hallucinations and locomotor hyperactivity. Using prepulse inhibition (PPI) of the acoustic startle, which is impaired in schizophrenia,we aimed to investigate:i) the existence of a direct and potentially inhibitory neural pathway between the inferior colliculus (IC) and the pedunculopontine tegmental nucleus

Responses of midbrain auditory neurons to two different environmental sounds-A new approach on cross-sound modeling.

When modeling auditory responses to environmental sounds, results are satisfactory if both training and testing are restricted to datasets of one type of sound. To predict 'cross-sound' responses (i.e., to predict the response to one type of sound e.g., rat Eating sound, after training with another type of sound e.g., rat Drinking sound), performance is typically poor. Here we implemented a novel approach to improve such cross-sound modeling (single unit datasets were collected at the auditory midbrain of anesthetized rats). The method had two key features: (a) population responses (e.g., aver

Auditory Brainstem Changes in Timing may Underlie Hyperacusis in a Salicylate-induced Acute Rat Model.

Hyperacusis, an exaggerated, sometimes painful perception of loudness even for soft sounds, is a poorly understood distressing condition. While the involvement of modified gain of central auditory neurons and the influence of nonauditory brain regions are well-documented, the issue of where in the auditory system these abnormalities arise remains open, particularly when hyperacusis comes without sensorineural hearing loss. Here we used acute intraperitoneal administration of sodium salicylate (150 mg/kg) in rats, enough to produce > 10-dB decrease in acoustic startle threshold with mild hearin

Unmasking effects of olivocochlear efferent activation on responses of inferior colliculus neurons.

Behavioural studies suggest a role for the medial olivocochlear (MOC) system in improving detection and discrimination of signals in noise. Physiological studies in the cochlea support this notion, showing unmasking, an improvement of the dynamic range of primary auditory afferents in response to tones in noise after MOC system activation. However, little is known about unmasking effects in higher centres. We investigated the effects of MOC stimulation on the responses of neurons in the guinea pig inferior colliculus to masked tones. In 50% of neurons background noise increased the basal rate

Tinnitus and inferior colliculus activity in chinchillas related to three distinct patterns of cochlear trauma.

A longstanding hypothesis is that tinnitus, the perception of sound without an external acoustic source, is triggered by a distinctive pattern of cochlear hair cell (HC) damage and that this subsequently leads to altered neural activity in the central auditory pathway. This hypothesis was tested by assessing behavioral evidence of tinnitus and spontaneous neural activity in the inferior colliculus (IC) after unilateral cochlear trauma. Chinchillas were assigned to four cochlear treatment groups. Each treatment produced a distinctive pattern of HC damage, as follows: acoustic exposure (AEx): sp

Contralateral hearing loss as an effect of venous congestion at the ipsilateral inferior colliculus after microvascular decompression: report of a case.

Contralateral hearing loss after surgical procedures within the cerebellopontine angle is rarely seen and its pathophysiological background is not yet understood. A patient with contralateral hearing loss after microvascular decompression for trigeminal neuralgia is described. Ipsilateral brainstem auditory potential (BAEP) monitoring and facial nerve EMG did not show major abnormalities. During otherwise uneventful and successful surgery a branch of the petrosal vein was sacrificed to widen the access to the trigeminal root exit zone. On the third postoperative day the patient complained abou

Neural sensitivity to interaural time differences: beyond the Jeffress model.

Interaural time differences (ITDs) are a major cue for localizing the azimuthal position of sounds. The dominant models for processing ITDs are based on the Jeffress model and predict neurons that fire maximally at a common ITD across their responsive frequency range. Such neurons are indeed found in the binaural pathways and are referred to as "peak-type." However, other neurons discharge minimally at a common ITD (trough-type), and others do not display a common ITD at the maxima or minima (intermediate-type). From recordings of neurons in the auditory cortex of the unanesthetized rabbit to

Similarities between chronic pain and tinnitus.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to review hypotheses about the mechanisms of chronic pain and to compare them with that of tinnitus. Hypotheses about the pathophysiology of severe tinnitus and chronic pain have been of mainly two kinds: one of which claims that pathology located in the periphery (the ear for tinnitus, and peripheral nerves for pain) can explain the symptoms, while the other claims that the symptoms are caused by changes in the function of nuclei of the central nervous system. DATA SOURCES: A search of the literature from the past 35 years was used. CONCLUSIONS: There is

Enhancement of the auditory cortex evoked responses in awake guinea pigs after noise exposure.

In a previous paper [Popelár et al., Hear. Res. 26, 239-247 (1987)] we have shown that amplitudes of the auditory cortex evoked responses (AC-ER) in awake guinea pigs were enhanced for several hours after 1 h of noise exposure whereas amplitudes of the compound potential of the auditory nerve (CAP) and of the inferior colliculus evoked responses (IC-ER) declined. The present study demonstrates that the duration of the AC-ER amplitude increase is related to the intensity of the noise exposure (white noise, for 30 min or 1 h, intensity range 105-125 dB). The AC-ER amplitude as well as the thresh

Hematoma of the inferior colliculus: uncommon cause of trochlear nerve deficit and contralateral sensory hemisyndrome.

A 57 year old man consulted us for sudden onset of acuphenes in the right ear, followed by diplopia on forward and downward gaze and paresthesias on the right side of the body. Examination of ocular movements revealed a deficit of the superior oblique muscle of the left eye. CT and MR brainscans imaged a punctate bleed of the left inferior colliculus. The patient was discharged after 16 days still complaining of diplopia on forward and downward gaze. There was no change in neurological status at follow-up. It is rare for an intracerebral hematoma to be located in the midbrain. The case we repo

Anomalous retinal pathways in the Siamese cat: an inadequate substrate for normal bioncular vision.

All major retinal pathways in the Siamese cat are abnormal, with almost total crossing of the projections to the pretectum and superior colliculus. These projections represent a marked disruption in the customary neural substrate for binocular vision, which implies a consequent impairment in stereoscopic depth perception. Crossed eyes, commonly seen in the Siamese cat, may therefore arise from a neuroanatomical defect in the primary visual pathways.
