A double-blind trial comparing isoprinosine with a placebo was conducted in 36 subjects. Improvement of skin lesions was significantly better in the treatment group (p less than or equal to 0.01). The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of IgG and the separation of the CSF and serum proteins by isoelectric focusing (IEF) were studied in 5 patients with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE). Oligoclonal IgG fractions were found in the CSF of all the patients. The CSF IgG, IgG-Index and IgG SYN values were higher in the patients observed in the earlier than in those seen in the later stages of the disease. 1 of the 3 patients treated with isoprinosine presented a partial clinical remission accompanied by an increase in the parameters of intrathecal IgG synthesis.

Six patients with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis were treated with the antiviral agent inosiplex. The clinical condition of four children continued to deteriorate in spite of the treatment, the condition of one remained unchanged, and that of another improved minimally. The effect of inosiplex in these patients is not evident since this group demonstrated a pattern of progression similar to that seen in subacute sclerosing panencephalitis without specific treatment.

We investigated the effect of glucose infusion on adenosine triphosphate degradation in skeletal muscle of patients with glycogen storage disease type VII. Three patients and six healthy subjects exercised on a bicycle ergometer twice, once with 20% glucose infusion and once with saline infusion. A long-term study of isoprinosine, with temporary discontinuation of the treatment, in a 25-year-old man with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis is presented. Isoprinosine appears to have mainly an effect on the mental disturbances in stage I. EEG and CFS changes correlate well with the clinical course and the influence of isoprinosine.
