Modelled impact of Tiny Targets on the distribution and abundance of riverine tsetse.

BACKGROUND: The insecticide-treated baits known as Tiny Targets are one of the cheapest means of controlling riverine species of tsetse flies, the vectors of the trypanosomes that cause sleeping sickness in humans. Models of the efficacy of these targets deployed near rivers are potentially useful in planning control campaigns and highlighting the principles involved. METHODS AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: To evaluate the potential of models, we produced a simple non-seasonal model of the births, deaths, mobility and aging of tsetse, and we programmed it to simulate the impact of seven years of targ

Effectiveness of orally-delivered double-stranded RNA on gene silencing in the stinkbug Plautia stali.

Development of a reliable method for RNA interference (RNAi) by orally-delivered double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) is potentially promising for crop protection. Considering that RNAi efficiency considerably varies among different insect species, it is important to seek for the practical conditions under which dsRNA-mediated RNAi effectively works against each pest insect. Here we investigated RNAi efficiency in the brown-winged green stinkbug Plautia stali, which is notorious for infesting various fruits and crop plants. Microinjection of dsRNA into P. stali revealed high RNAi efficiency-injection o

Habitat characterization of sand fly vectors of leishmaniasis in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan.

Leishmaniasis is currently prevalent in 98 countries including Pakistan, where its wide-spread. Phlebotomus papatasi Scopoli and Phlebotomus sergenti Parrot are suspected vectors of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) while P. Phlebotomus major Yakimoff and Phlebotomus hindustanicus Theodor are vectors of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province of Pakistan. The present study identifies the complexity of environmental factors affecting the distribution of these vector sand fly species in KP. Sand fly habitats in the province were characterized from relevant published source

Fifty years of tsetse control in Tanzania: challenges and prospects for the future.

Tsetse flies are the vectors of trypanosomes, the causative organisms of trypanosomiasis, nagana, in animals and sleeping sickness in man. In Tanzania, tsetse transmitted trypanosomiasis is one of the most important disease affecting both animals and humans. About 40% of land suitable for grazing and areas with high agricultural potential are currently tsetse infested. It is estimated that about 4.4 million livestock and 4 million people are at risk of contracting tsetse borne trypanosomiasis. African animal trypanosomiasis (AAT) causes loss in animals due to mortality and reduced milk yield,

Environmental management for the control of Triatoma dimidiata (Latreille, 1811), (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) in Costa Rica: a pilot project.

An ecological control method, using environmental management operations, based on biological and behavioral characteristics of Triatoma dimidiata (Latreille, 1811), was implemented as a pilot project in an area of Costa Rica where the bug is prevalent. The sample was represented by 20 houses with peridomestic colonies (two also had indoor infestation), divided in two equivalent groups of 10 each. In one group we intervened the houses, i.e. all objects or materials that were serving as artificial ecotopes for the bugs were removed, and the second group was used as control houses. After a year o

Breeding habitats of vector sandflies and their control in India.

In India Phlebotomus argentipes and Phlebotomus papatasi are the proven and suspected vectors of visceral leishmaniasis respectively. In the past, only a few samples from the field yielded sandfly immatures though there were many adults in the vicinity. This might be because of dearth of information on the various factors influencing the oviposition of the gravid females as well as survival and development of immatures. Therefore, available information on these aspects has been reviewed so as to highlight the imperative of undertaking further studies on the ecology of immatures in field condit

Performance of abamectin bait formulations against German cockroaches (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae).

Commercial and experimental formulations of abamectin-based baits were evaluated in laboratory and field studies against the German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.). In continuous exposure tests with adult males, toxicity and presumably bait consumption varied with the design of the bioassay. LT50s ranged from approximately 0.9 to > 41 d for an aerosol gel formulation for males deprived of water for 72 h before the test and for undeprived males tested with alternative food and water, respectively. Dry formulations had lower LT50s than water containing formulations for nondeprived males. The

Mark-release-recapture experiments to estimate the efficiency of the light trap in collecting Japanese encephalitis vector mosquitoes.

Efficiency of the light trap in collecting females of Culex tritaeniorhynchus, the principal vector mosquito of Japanese encephalitis, was evaluated by mark-release-recapture experiments. Females collected with dry ice in the field were marked and released in a pigsty. The recapture rate of marked females by the light trap was so low as around 1% or lower. Owing to this low efficiency, it is not likely that the light trap can be a useful tool in the control of Japanese encephalitis.

[The necessity of conducting to the end the activities of vector control in the onchocerciasis control program in west Africa: recall of the stakes and proposal of a minimum budget for the period 1998-2002].

After a brief presentation of the Onchocerciasis Control Programme in West Africa (OCP), the authors realize the health and socioeconomic consequences that could follow a cessation of larvicide treatment before 2002 in the south-eastern and western extensions of the Programme. Taking into account that OCP activities are theoretically supported until 1997, but aware of financial constraints that will probably increase from now to 2002, this paper proposes an a minima estimation of the residual vector control activities for a "phasing out" spread out for five years (1998-2002). These estimations

Distribution of Simulium yahense after larviciding activities in the southern extension of the Onchocerciasis Control Programme.

The distribution range of Simulium yahense in the Eastern Operational Area of the Onchocerciasis Control Programme increased after larviciding treatments were started in 1988, to control important Simulium damnosum s. 1. vectors of onchocerciasis. A distribution map indicating the extended range is drawn and the importance of this expansion of S. yahense to disease transmission discussed.

Maintenance of effective control of Simulium damnosum in the face of insecticide resistance.

The control of onchocerciasis through reduction of its vector Simulium damnosum depends on highly effective insecticide treatments directed against the larvae. As these treatments must be applied weekly over wide areas for many years, ideal conditions for the development of resistance have been created. Resistance to organophosphate compounds has occurred. To maintain effective vector control, an intense operational research effort has been necessary. Close and constant monitoring of susceptibility, combined with cytotaxonomic identification of the tested larvae, has revealed the pattern of sp

Paraborg: Paramedic Cyborg Insects for In Situ Emergency Drug-Delivery.

Over the past two decades, cyborg insects have emerged as a promising alternative to artificial insect-scale mobile robots, owing to their low power consumption, resilient biological bodies with naturally integrated sensors, agile locomotion, and self-adaptability. However, most studies have focused primarily on autonomous control and hardware integration for search-oriented urban search-and-rescue operations following natural disasters such as earthquakes. This raises a crucial next-step challenge: beyond locating survivors, what life-saving interventions can cyborg insects perform? Here, we

Use of shaking treatments and preharvest sprays of pyrethroid insecticides to reduce risk of yellowjackets and other insects on Christmas trees imported into Hawaii.

Insects are commonly found by Hawaii's quarantine inspectors on Christmas trees imported from the Pacific Northwest. To reduce the risk of importing yellowjacket (Vespula spp.) queens and other insects, an inspection and tree shaking certification program was begun in 1990. From 1993 to 2006, the annual percentage of shipped containers rated by Hawaii quarantine inspectors as moderately or highly infested with insects was significantly higher for manually shaken trees than for mechanically shaken trees. Between 1993 and 2001, 343 insect species in total were recovered from Christmas trees. Liv

[Personal protection measures against blood-sucking insects and ticks].

Blood-sucking arthropods are major vectors of various pathogens like viruses, bacteria, protozoa and nematodes. Preventing exposure to the vector is imperative especially when vaccine and prophylactic treatments are not available. Personal protection measures (PPM) are essential and often the only means available when dealing with blood-sucking disease transmitting arthropods. Awareness of the risk in the specific areas of travel is the first step to be taken before and while traveling. PPM include preventive personal behavior, suitable clothing, application of insect repellents to the skin, t
