Repellency of tsetse-refractory waterbuck (Kobus defassa) body odour to Glossina pallidipes (Diptera: Glossinidae): assessment of relative contribution of different classes and individual constituents.

Our earlier studies on the comparative behavioural responses of caged savanna tsetse (Glossina morsitans morsitans and Glossina pallidipes) on a preferred host (ox) and a non-host (waterbuck) suggested the presence of allomonal constituents on the latter. Follow up comparison of the compositions of odours of waterbuck with those of ox and buffalo led to the identification of a series of compounds (15) specific to waterbuck, including straight chain carboxylic acid (C5-C10), phenols (guaiacol and carvacrol), 2-alkanone homologues (C8-C12), geranylacetone and δ-octalactone. Behavioural studies i

Dengue fever: natural management.

Dengue fever is caused by the mosquito-borne dengue virus (DENV) serotypes 1-4, and is the most common arboviral infection of humans in subtropical and tropical regions of the world. Dengue virus infections can present with a spacious range of clinical signs, from a mild feverish illness to a life-threatening shock syndrome. Till now, there is no approved vaccine or drug against this virus. Therefore, there is an urgent need of development of alternative solutions for dengue. Several plant species have been reported with anti-dengue activity. Many herbal/natural drugs, most of which are common

Repellent, antifeedant, and toxic activities of Lantana camara leaf extract against Reticulitermes flavipes (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae).

This study investigated biological activity of chloroform extract of dry Lantana camara 'Mozelle' leaves against the eastern subterranean termite, Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar), an important structural pest. Repellent activity was assessed using a paper-disc choice test and a sand arena choice test. Antifeedant and toxic properties were assessed using a no-choice paper test and a topical application method. In the choice tests, significantly fewer termites made contact with treated paper-discs at test concentrations > or = 0.016 mg/cm2 (equivalent to 0.0023 wt:wt) or tunneled into treated s

A novel method for controlling multicolored Asian lady beetle (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) in vineyards.

The introduced biological control agent Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) has attained pest status in North America as its presence in vineyards during harvest may compromise the quality of the resulting wine. Control of H. axyridis in vineyards is difficult as their populations may fluctuate daily, and there are few products registered to control this pest. Sulfur dioxide, in the form of potassium metabisulfite (KMS), is commonly used in wine as both an antimicrobial and an antioxidant. In this study, the effectiveness of KMS as a repellent against H. axyridis was measure

Controlling phlebotomine sand flies to prevent canine Leishmania infantum infection: A case of knowing your enemy.

Leishmaniosis caused by Leishmania infantum is a widespread zoonotic disease that can be transmitted to animals and humans by their vectors, blood-sucking phlebotomine sand flies. To prevent canine leishmaniosis across the whole Mediterranean region, vector control is essential. Because of phlebotomine breeding sites are diverse, environmental larval controls have limited practical value. Control methods of adults are being evaluated, such as selective baits based on sugar feeding of males and females or Attractive Toxic Sugar Baits (ATSB), and the indoor use of Long-Lasting-Insecticidal Nets

Assessing the Repellency of an Insecticide-Fungicide Combination to Bees Using Bioacoustics.

Soybeans (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) and bees have a mutually beneficial relationship where nectar is exchanged for pollination service, which may enhance seed yield. However, pesticide use on soybeans during flowering could disrupt this relationship by harming bees and therefore reducing the yield benefits from pollinatiors. This study examined how pesticide applications during flowering affect bee foraging and soybean yield, focusing on application timing (mid-morning vs. mid-day) and flowering stage (R3-full bloom vs. R5-late/end of bloom), compared to an untreated control. To do this, an expe

Discovery of Novel Potential Aphid Repellents: Geranic Acid Esters Containing Substituted Aromatic Rings.

Aphids are one of the most damaging agricultural pests. For the sake of novel eco-friendly compounds with good activity for aphid control, a series of novel geranic acid esters containing substituted aromatic rings were designed by inverting ester groups of lead compounds. All compounds were characterized by HRMS, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR. In order to identify the effect of inversion ester groups on activity, a bioassay was conducted. The results showed that the repellent activity against Acyrthosiphon pisum (A. pisum) and the binding affinity with the odorant-binding protein 9 from A. pisum (ApisO

Repellents as a major element in the context of prevention of tick-borne diseases.

In Poland, out of the 21 species of ticks described, two species have the greatest epidemiological significance: Ixodes ricinus and Dermacentor reticulatus. Their participation in the transmission of etiologic agents of vector diseases such as Lyme disease, tick-borne encephalitis, human granulocytic anaplasmosis, babesiosis, rickettsiosis and many others is widely known. Due to the often severe and sometimes fatal course of diseases transmitted by ticks, a great deal of emphasis is placed on prophylactic activities, minimizing the possibility of biting and transfering pathogens along with the

Efficacy of chemical repellents against Otobius megnini (Acari: Argasidae) and three species of ixodid ticks.

Otobius megnini (Dugès), often referred to as the ear tick or spinose ear tick, is a one-host tick native to the southwestern United States and Mexico. Infestations of this species can cause severe irritation and may affect breeding behavior in the host. Although chemical repellents are commonly used as an alternative approach to conventional arthropod vector control, information on repellency against O. megnini is lacking. This study compared repellency of ammonia, BioUD(®), 98.25% DEET, garlic pepper tea, permanone, and pyrethrin with piperonyl butoxide, against larvae stages of O. megnini,

Mosquito repellents and superwarfarin rodenticides--are they really toxic in children?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In many United States households, there are many substances used to control the exposure of our children to mosquitoes, mice and rats. This review provides information on common mosquito repellents and rodenticides used in households and discusses their toxicity, in order to help pediatricians better advise their patients of their proper use. RECENT FINDINGS: A recent study has demonstrated that many continue to have practices of applying DEET (N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide) based repellents that may lead to undesirable effects. Picaridin and oil of lemon eucalyptus are two

[Tests for evaluating the effectiveness of pediculicides: importance and limitations].

The obligation to prove pediculicides efficacy is relatively recent. Two tests are required by the authorities to obtain registration. In vitro test (with Pediculus humanus humanus) is the first step to evaluate the efficacy of new molecules. It must be followed by bio-clinical tests (with infested children by Pediculus humanus capitis). For those tests the authors advise to respect the "three units rule": unit of time (no more than 2 days for the test), unit of place (same environment) and unit of action (only one team to apply and evaluate products). This type of tests is possible only in co

Volatile Organic Compounds from an Indoor Pest, Luprops tristis, Collected by a Novel Glass Chamber and Their Implications for Human Health.

Insects secrete volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for various reasons, such as intra- or inter-species communication, attracting mates, or repelling predators. The volatiles from indoor insect pests, e.g., phenolic secretions, can impact inhabitants in various ways, causing allergies, skin and eye irritations, etc. The Mupli beetle (Luprops tristis Fabricius, 1801) is one such nuisance pest that aggregates in great numbers in indoor spaces, especially near rubber plantations in tropical African and Asian countries. This study aimed to understand the whole-body volatilome of L. tristis, compris

Learned host preference in a Chagas disease vector, Rhodnius prolixus.

It has been largely assumed that the individual experience of disease vector insects may affect host choice and, as a consequence, have an important influence on parasite transmission. In particular, it is speculated that vector insects should be able to learn and remember the most and/or less defensive hosts, shifting their preference accordingly. Nevertheless, despite the invested efforts in testing the capacity to learn and remember information of blood-sucking insects, only little conclusive information has been obtained hitherto. Recently, the ability of Rhodnius prolixus to associate a b
