Interpersonal dyadic influences on transitions between pain states: a narrative review and synthesis.

Pain is not experienced in isolation; it is affected by and affects other people. Interactions between parents and partners and people living with pain affect beliefs, emotions and behaviours, and pain progress and change. We searched systematically for longitudinal studies of associations between specific familial, dyadic, interpersonal factors and quantitative pain transitions. We coded studies for risk of bias. For the narrative synthesis, we grouped findings by dyads-parents and children, and people with pain and their partners (usually spouses), and then by the psychosocial mechanism/s. W

Type of trauma exposure and subsequent mental health Symptoms: Examining the role of social needs in TX-YDSRN youth.

Many youth experience potentially traumatic events and may go on to develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). For youth who develop PTSD, little research has examined the role of health-related social needs, like housing instability or food insecurity, on its development. The present study aimed to explore the types of traumatic experiences reported at baseline by youth and sought to explore the relationship between post-traumatic stress symptoms and reported health-related social needs. Specifically, it aimed to determine if the effects of health-related social needs differed across demo

Mechanisms of change in interpersonal therapy (IPT).

Although interpersonal therapy (IPT) has demonstrated efficacy for mood and other disorders, little is known about how IPT works. We present interpersonal change mechanisms that we hypothesize account for symptom change in IPT. Integrating relational theory and insights based on research findings regarding stress, social support, and illness, IPT highlights contextual factors thought to precipitate and maintain psychiatric disorders. It frames therapy around a central interpersonal problem in the patient's life, a current crisis or relational predicament that is disrupting social support and i

Analyzing interpersonal coordination through motion capture and cross-correlation: An integrated approach to magnitude, temporality, and morphology.

This study presents a method for quantifying bodily coordination between two people using motion capture data recorded during unscripted, face-to-face interactions. The approach enables the examination of the magnitude, temporal dynamics, and morphological characteristics of coordination patterns across multiple dyads, while allowing participants to move and speak freely. It provides a continuous analysis of the full movement stream without requiring segmentation or predefined coding. Technically, the method relies on speed signals derived from position or acceleration data, which are well sui

Personality in negotiation revisited: Recent advances and future directions.

Influential voices long dismissed individual differences as irrelevant to negotiation research. Recent calls to examine the process in its full complexity invite a renewed look at personality in negotiation. We take stock of the evidence using three complementary lenses: When does personality matter across contexts, outcomes, and phases? With whom does personality matter in interaction, including partner and fit effects? How should researchers design studies and measures that can recover stable personality effects in interdependent settings? Across these lenses, recent advances suggest that tr

Daily time use among individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders and unaffected controls: Results from the DiAPAson multicentric project.

OBJECTIVE: In the framework of daily time use, physical activity, and interpersonal relationships in patients with schizophrenia project, we aimed to investigate (a) within and between-group differences in daily time use of individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs) and unaffected controls, stratifying them by age, sex, and employment status; (b) the associations between daily time use, the severity of psychiatric symptoms, and psychosocial functioning amongst those with SSD. METHOD: From October 2020 to October 2021, 306 outpatients and 312 individuals living in residential fac…

Considering between- and within-person relations in auto-regressive cross-lagged panel models for developmental data.

Longitudinal data can provide inferences at both the between-person and within-person levels of analysis, but only to the extent that the statistical models chosen for data analysis are specified to adequately capture these distinct sources of association. The present work focuses on auto-regressive cross-lagged panel models, which have long been used to examine time-lagged reciprocal relations and mediation among multiple variables measured repeatedly over time. Unfortunately, many common implementations of these models fail to distinguish between-person associations among individual differen

They were uncivil, and now I am too: A dual process model exploring relations between customer incivility and instigated incivility.

Incivility from customers is a common occurrence for employees working in service-oriented organizations. Typically, such incivility engenders instigated mistreatment, both towards customers and colleagues. Not much is understood, however, about the mechanisms underlying the relations between customer incivility and instigated incivility. Answering recent calls from incivility scholars, the present research, drawing from Self-Regulatory Resource Theory and Stressor-Emotion models of workplace behaviour, explored cognitive (i.e., self-regulatory resource depletion) and affective (i.e., negative

Attentional focus in social anxiety disorder: potential for interactive processes.

The two preeminent cognitive behavioral models of social anxiety [Clark, D.M., & Wells, A., (1995). A cognitive model of social phobia. However, Clark and Wells assert that socially anxious persons attend

Intractable paroxysmal sneezing.

Intractable paroxysmal sneezing is a rare disease primarily affecting teenage girls. We present the case of a 12-year-old girl who demonstrated the classical features of intractable paroxysmal sneezing of psychogenic origin. Most of the reported cases are psychogenic in origin, but a number of other conditions may cause intractable paraoxysmal sneeze. Apart from a detailed history, clinical examination and relevant investigations, topical nasal anaesthesia should be tried for control of symptoms--that will help to differentiate psychogenic sneezing from organic sneezing. A timely diagnosis can

Relationship-Specific Attachment and Mentalization as Predictors of Borderline Personality Features and Interpersonal Competence Among Emerging Adults.

Developmental psychopathology models, like the mentalization theory, have facilitated the theoretical understanding of trajectories that contribute to the expression and experience of borderline personality (BP) features. Mentalization theory posits that BP vulnerabilities and interpersonal difficulties arise from insecure attachment experiences and deficits in mentalizing ability. This study explored the intersections of attachment vulnerabilities in close relationships, mentalizing domains, and their combined impact on BP features and interpersonal competence in emerging adults. The sample i

Distinct paths to alcohol problems: Impacts of childhood maltreatment, attachment insecurity, and interpersonal problems.

Childhood maltreatment is a strong risk factor for increased alcohol use and alcohol-related problems. One possible explanation for these associations is the influence of dysfunctional attachment styles and interpersonal problems in adulthood. Individuals who have experienced childhood maltreatment are likely to develop maladaptive interpersonal styles due to insecure attachment. Maladaptive interpersonal styles may increase emotional distress, which in turn, can make these individuals vulnerable to alcohol use and alcohol-related problems. Using data from 508 undergraduate students, this stud

DSM-5 Functional Framework: Structure and Psychopathological Correlates of the DSM-5 Levels of Functioning Questionnaire-Short Form.

Interest in the Level of Personality Functioning (LPF), defined by Criterion A of the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD), is growing. LPF includes self-functioning (identity, self-direction) and interpersonal functioning (empathy, intimacy). While LPF is crucial for understanding personality dysfunction, its ability to distinguish personality disorders from other conditions remains debated. The DSM-5 Levels of Functioning Questionnaire-Short Form (DLOPFQ-SF) is a promising LPF measure, but further research in diverse populations is needed. This study examined the internal struc

Characterizing interpersonal emotion regulation across dimensions of personality pathology.

There is growing recognition of the value of better understanding interpersonal emotion regulation (IER) in individuals with personality pathology, with some initial investigations providing preliminary information about IER in borderline personality disorder (BPD). We aimed to examine characteristics of IER across dimensional measures of personality pathology. In a sample recruited for elevated levels of personality pathology, specifically BPD features, (N = 95; 63% met criteria for at least one personality disorder), we examined the relations among interpersonal and emotional personality pat

Proximal Processes, Temperament, and Pathological Narcissism: An Empirical Exploration from the Longitudinal Study of Personality Disorders.

INTRODUCTION: It is argued that all personality pathology represents the final emergent product of a complex interaction of underlying neurobehavioral systems, which are reflected in personality factors, in conjunction with environmental inputs. Neurobehavioral systems manifest themselves in dispositional temperament and personality processes. Environmental inputs include, obviously, interpersonal relationships (e.g., parenting, social, and mentoring relations) as well as other factors such as abuse, neglect, and/or environmental insults (e.g., economic hardship, deprivation). Narcissistic per…

Associations between Dark Triad and Ambivalent Sexism: Sex Differences among Adolescents.

The Dark Triad traits (DT; Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and narcissism) have been repeatedly labeled as a constellation of traits that are characterized by a dishonest and self-focused approach to interpersonal relations. Personality psychologists suggest that these traits make some people more susceptible than others to intergroup bias, threat, and aggression. Thus, in order to delve into a psychological profile prone to accepting and justifying sexist attitudes, the aims of the current study were to analyze the presence of DT and sexist attitudes in a sample of 367 adolescents (Mage = 15.1…
