We present a case report of a fetal diagnosis of cystic fibrosis after ultrasound abnormalities. After delivery, a type 3A intestinal atresia was diagnosed. Segmental enterectomy with end-to-end anastomosis was performed. This case report highlights the diagnosis complexity of a fetal intestinal atresia associated with cystic fibrosis.

A hydramnion occurring during the second half of pregnancy may be due to atresias in the upper intestinal tract. Generally, one case of oesophageal atresia is likely to occur in every 2,500 births, often together with other malformations. Prenatal diagnosis of such atresias substantially improves prognosis for these children via optimal cooperation between the obstetrician and the paediatric surgeon. Characteristic features of oesophageal atresia in the sonographic image are, besides the hydramnion, the absence of visualisation of the stomach. Sonographic diagnosis of duodenal atresias is base

Oesophageal atresia and tracheo-oesophageal fistula patients are known to have associated anomalies. Malrotation is a dangerous diagnosis to miss. The association of oesophageal atresia and tracheo-oesophageal fistula with malrotation is known but not quantified and certainly not emphasised enough in the literature. We retrospectively studied our population of oesophageal atresia and tracheo-oesophageal fistula patients to look for an associated malrotation. Ninety-one patients with oesophageal atresia were reviewed during 1978 - 1997, of whom 60 patients had an upper gastrointestinal study. T

Hereditary multiple atresias involving the gastrointestinal tract from pylorus to rectum are the most unusual form of intestinal atresia; the type of inheritance was suggested to be autosomal recessive. The inheritance of the severe combined immunodeficiency syndrome can be autosomal recessive or X-linked. We report on 3 sibs with multiple-level intestinal atresias. One sib had severe combined immunodeficiency syndrome and clinical histories of the other 2 sibs strongly suggested a congenital immunodeficiency syndrome. The parents of those children were healthy and nonconsanguineous. To our kn

Atresia of the colon represents the least common cause of neonatal intestinal obstruction, comprising less than 10 percent of gastrointestinal atresias. Eleven patients underwent surgical repair of colonic atresia during a 5 year period. Five of the patients were premature. Two had associated gastroschisis and other congenital anomalies were present in three patients. Hypaque enema was utilized to diagnose intestinal atresia and laparotomy was then undertaken. Primary repair could be performed in four patients, one with type I and three with type 3 atresias. These four patients did well and we

BACKGROUND: Intestinal atresia is a common cause of neonatal intestinal obstruction, and management of this disease in limited setup of a developing country is very difficult.
METHODS: This study is a retrospective study of patients with jejunoileal atresias and their postoperative outcome in a teaching hospital in eastern Nepal over a 5-year period.
RESULTS: There were 28 children (19 boys and 9 girls). 11 children (39.28%) had jejunal atresia and 17 (60.71%) had ileal atresia. Eight (28.5%) patients died, 6 were jejunal atresia (54.5%) and 2 were ileal atresia (11.7%). The most common caus

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Biliary atresia is a rare, progressive cholangiopathy that affects newborns, causing jaundice and other manifestations of hyperbilirubinemia. The incidence is higher in Asia than in Europe. The only available treatment is a surgical operation called Kasai portoenterostomy. In this case, the authors highlighted rare congenital anomalies that came with biliary atresia.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 10-day-old male infant was admitted to the hospital due to recurrent vomiting, yellowish skin, and scleral icterus. Laboratory investigations revealed elevated total serum and dir

INTRODUCTION: Gastroschisis with colonic atresia is a rare association. Due to its rarity and variation in presentation, no standardized surgical treatment option exists. Complicated gastroschisis is associated with a higher morbidity and mortality than intestinal atresia or gastroschisis alone.
METHODS: This is a case report of a neonate with congenital gastroschisis. On day of life 1, a silo was placed. On day of life 4, the upper portion of silo contents appeared more congested with dusky discoloration and the patient was oliguric. She was taken to the operating room for exploration.

Recently, a 5 mm laparoscopic stapler entered the market and is currently used for a wide variety of pediatric applications. The aim of this article is to be the first report of the use of this 5 mm laparoscopic stapler for open neonatal intestinal anastomosis in humans. We used JustRight (Justright Surgical) 5 mm laparoscopic stapler® in 5 patients, with a total of six anastomoses being constructed. Enteroenterostomies after bowel resection were performed in these neonates with diagnoses of closed gastroschisis with ileal atresia, multiple intestinal atresia, ileal atresia, and jejunal atresi

Colonic atresia (CA) is a very rare cause of intestinal obstruction, and little information has been available about the management and predictors of outcome. A retrospective clinical trial was performed to delineate the clinical characteristics of CA with special emphasis on surgical treatment and factors affecting outcome. Children with CA who were treated in our department between 1977 and 1998 were reviewed: 14 boys and 4 girls aged 1 day to 5 months. All but 2 referred patients and 1 with prenatal diagnosis presented with intestinal obstruction. Plain abdominal X-ray films showed findings

Apple peel intestinal atresia is a rare congenital malformation. It consists of a proximal jejunum ending in a blind pouch and distal small bowel wrapped around its vascular supply in a spiral fashion. A combination of type IIIb jejunoileal atresia (apple peel atresia) and type IV (multiple intestinal atresias) is a rare entity. The diagnosis and management of such complicated cases is a challenge, especially in resource-limited settings. We report a case of a four-day-old female who presented to the neonatal intensive care unit with complaints of vomiting, yellow discoloration of the skin, an

This report describes a case of 16 small bowel atresias in a twin who was born at 31 weeks' gestation, weighing 1,690 g. All atresias and intestinal segments of 5 cm or less in length were resected, resulting in nine primary anastomoses, preserving 75% (107 cm) of his initial small bowel length. The baby went home on full oral feedings after 10 weeks. Multiple anastomoses in the low-birth-weight neonate can be tolerated with the functional benefit of maximal bowel length. The time taken to tolerate feedings appears to be independent of the number of anastomoses. Vascular anastomoses associated

A term newborn presented after birth with abdominal distension and vomiting in a developing country in Asia. Ultrasonography suggested intestinal obstruction and abdominal X-ray showed a 'double-bubble' sign suggestive of intestinal atresia. The newborn was diagnosed with early-onset neonatal sepsis secondary to intestinal obstruction and transferred to the neonatal intensive care unit. Surgery was performed and type IIIb jejunal atresia was found. Type IIIa/b jejunal atresia is associated with high incidence of poor outcome in lower socioeconomic countries. The affected intestinal segment and

BACKGROUND: Jejunoileal atresia is the most common intestinal atresia and the most frequent cause of neonatal intestinal obstruction. The prognosis depends on several important factors. The patients reported were collected for evaluation of the factors contributing to their prognoses.
METHODS: In the ten-year period from October 1982 to October 1992, all jejunoileal atresia patients who received treatment in this hospital were entered in this study. Possible factors contributing to prognosis, such as prematurity, low birth weight, apple peel atresia, anastomotic leakage, sepsis, short bowel s

Colonic atresia Hirschsprung's disease association (CAHDA) is usually diagnosed after several failures of intestinal anastomoses. Having previously reported one of the cases of CAHDA, we established the diagnosis in a patient before attempting intestinal anastomosis for stoma closure. We herein report the first patient with CAHDA in the literature diagnosed before a therapeutic challenge. We recommend a biopsy of the distal colonic segment either during initial laparotomy or before attempting intestinal anastomosis for closure of colostomy to prevent therapeutic challenge in the patients with

Fetal gut atresia is variably associated with polyhydramnios. In order to determine which pregnancies will develop polyhydramnios, the case notes of 80 babies with gut atresia and stenosis were reviewed. Maternal polyhydramnios developed in all cases of pure oesophageal atresia (n = 8), all cases of Type III duodenal atresia (DA) with a non-bifid bile duct (n = 8), 80% of cases with type I DA (n = 10), and 24% of atresias of the small intestine (n = 34). Polyhydramnios did not develop in any case where there was not total obstruction except in 1 baby with DA and a bifid bile duct (BBD). These

PURPOSE: This study aims to compare the prevalence and outcomes of surgically correctable congenital anomalies between sexes.
METHODS: Upon registration on PROSPERO (CRD42019120165), a librarian aided in conducting a systematic review using PRISMA guidelines. The five largest relevant studies were included for each anomaly. Cumulative prevalence differences and confidence intervals were calculated, and the Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel test was performed.
RESULTS: Of 42,722 identified studies, 68 were included in our analysis. All included anomalies had greater than 1000 patients except duodenal a

BACKGROUND: Colon atresia is one of the rarest congenital anomalies of the gastrointestinal tract, with an incident range of between 1 in 10,000 and 66,000 live births. Type I colonic atresia affects only the mucosal layer of the intestine and spares the intestinal wall and mesentery. Hirschsprung Disease is a rare association of Colon atresia and is usually diagnosed as a complication of atresia treatment.
CASE PRESENTATION: This study reports a 14-h term white middle-eastern female infant with type I transverse colonic atresia complicated by the association of Hirschsprung disease and provi

Intestinal atresia type III B (apple peel) and gastroschisis are both congenital malformations who require early surgical correction in neonatal age. Their association is very rare. We present the case of a full term infant with partial apple peel ileal atresia and a small defect of the anterior abdominal wall, complicated by in utero intestinal perforation and subsequent meconial peritonitis. We observed a partial atresia of small intestine, with involvement of terminal ileus savings of jejunum and a large part of the proximal ileum, small anterior abdominal wall defect with herniation of few

The birthweights of patients with congenital anomalies of the intestinal tract have been examined. Cases of esophageal and duodenal atresia, malrotation of the midgut and anal anomalies have been chosen only if they were uncomplicated by any other major anomaly, and their weights plotted on the centile charts when the gestational age was known. The birthweights of cases of esophageal and duodenal atresia are clearly less than in cases of malrotation and anal malformation. This difference may be related to the function of the intestinal canal. Despite low birthweights in cases of esophageal atr
