Superoxide-producing thermostable associate from the small intestines of control and alloxan-induced diabetic rats: quantitative and qualitative changes.

BACKGROUND: NADPH oxidase 1 (Nox1), which is highly expressed in the colon, is thought to play a potential role in host defense as a physical and innate immune barrier against commensal or pathogenic microbes in the gastrointestinal epithelium. Diabetes can be caused by several biological factors, including insulin resistance is one of them. Alloxan is widely used to induce insulin-dependent diabetes in experimental animals. Alloxan increases the generation of reactive oxygen species as a result of metabolic reactions in the body, along with a massive increase in cytosolic calcium concentratio

Growth hormone alters gross anatomy and morphology of the small and large intestines in age- and sex-dependent manners.

PURPOSE: Growth hormone (GH) has an important role in intestinal barrier function, and abnormalities in GH action have been associated with intestinal complications. Yet, the impact of altered GH on intestinal gross anatomy and morphology remains unclear. METHODS: This study investigated the influence of GH signaling on gross anatomy, morphology, and fibrosis by characterizing the small and large intestines in male and female bovine growth hormone transgenic (bGH) mice and GH receptor gene-disrupted (GHR-/-) mice at multiple timepoints. RESULTS: The length, weight, and circumference of the s…

NKG2D recognition mediates Toll-like receptor 3 signaling-induced breakdown of epithelial homeostasis in the small intestines of mice.

Toll-like receptors (TLRs) and NK receptors are the two most important receptor families in innate immunity. Although it has been observed that TLR signaling can induce or up-regulate the expression of the ligands for stimulatory NK receptors on monocytes or muscle cells, there is not yet a report indicating whether TLR signaling can break down self-tolerance through NK receptors. The present work reports that TLR3 signaling by polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid stimulation induces intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) to express retinoic acid early inducible-1 (a ligand for NKG2D) and to induce NKG

[Effects of bile and bile acids on spontaneous motor activity of the small and large rabbit intestines in vitro].

The aim of our study was to describe the effects of bile and bile acids action on the spontaneous motor activity of the rabbit small and large intestines. The following fragments of intestines were used: duodenum, jejunum, ileum, caecum and colon of 25 rabbits of both sexes, weighing 2-3 kg. The motor activity of the isolated fragments of the intestines was recorded by the suspension method in a 300 ml container with oxygenated Krebs' solution, temp. 37 degrees C (constant), pH 7.8. The intestine was connected with the miograph constructed according to the Gillespie method. Vesicular bile was …

A study of the ultrastructure of the intestines of mice experimentally infected with S. mansoni and treated with praziquantel.

The present experimental work studied the ultrastructural changes occurring in the intestines of mice infected with S. mansoni and treated with praziquantel. Mild degenerative changes of the intestinal cells together with degranulation of the APUD cells were observed. The enterochromaffin cells in the intestines secrete serotonin which is a vaso constrictor and a strong stimulator of the smooth muscles. A possible explanation of the side effects of praziquantel is thus offered.

[External fistulas of the small intestines in the newborn infant and child. Medical aspects and digestive resuscitation (19 cases)].

The prognosis in fistulae of the small intestine in the infant and child is totally different according to whether they develop following a simple operation involving the healthy small intestine or multiple or complicated operations on pathological bowel. Under these latter conditions, constant medico-surgical cooperation, modern techniques of renutrition (total parenteral renutrition or constant flow enteral nutrition), together with restoration of water/electrolyte balance and the treatment of infections give increasingly satisfactory results. In a series of 19 children, with 26 enterocutane

Effects of Mulberry Leaf Fu Tea on the Intestines and Intestinal Flora of Goto-Kakizaki Type 2 Diabetic Rats.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a disease caused by hyperglycemia, an imbalance in the intestinal flora and disruption of the endocrine system. At present, it is primarily controlled through drug treatment and an improved diet. Mulberry leaf and fu brick tea were considered to have excellent hypoglycemic effects. This study used mulberry leaves and fu brick tea as raw materials to develop a dietary regulator that can assist in the prevention and alleviation of diabetes. The experiment used the Goto-Kakizaki (GK) rat model to investigate the hypoglycemic effect of mulberry leaf fu tea (MFT) and its

Multi-omics reveals the protective effects of curcumin against AFB1-induced oxidative stress and inflammatory damage in duckling intestines.

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is the most prevalent and toxic class of aflatoxins, which is considered a significant risk factor for food safety. Curcumin, a phytoconstituent with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, has potential therapeutic value for intestinal inflammatory diseases. In this study, the duckling model susceptible to AFB1 was selected for toxicity testing, aiming to explore the effect of curcumin on AFB1 enterotoxicity and its possible mechanism of action. The results showed that curcumin promoted the growth and development of ducklings and mitigated the changes in morphology a

Vascular adhesion protein-1 expression is reduced in the intestines of infants with necrotizing enterocolitis: an observational research study.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is an inflammatory bowel disease in preterm neonates with high morbidity and mortality. The only treatment available is supportive with broad-spectrum antibiotics and gastrointestinal rest. Better understanding of the pathogenesis is crucial for the development of new therapies. Vascular adhesion protein-1 (VAP-1), expressed in human blood vessels and lymphatic, plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory diseases in adults. The aim of the study was to investigate the VAP-1 expression in the intestines of infants affected by NEC. METHOD…

Marmoset cytochrome P450 2D8 in livers and small intestines metabolizes typical human P450 2D6 substrates, metoprolol, bufuralol and dextromethorphan.

1. Although the New World non-human primate, the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus), is a potentially useful animal model, comprehensive understanding of drug metabolizing enzymes is insufficient. 2. A cDNA encoding a novel cytochrome P450 (P450) 2D8 was identified in marmosets. The amino acid sequence deduced from P450 2D8 cDNA showed a high sequence identity (83-86%) with other primate P450 2Ds. Phylogenetic analysis showed that marmoset P450 2D8 was closely clustered with human P450 2D6, unlike P450 2Ds of miniature pig, dog, rabbit, guinea pig, mouse or rat. 3. Marmoset P450 2D8 mRNA was

The effect of amnio-allantoic fluid pH on the intestines: an experimental study in the chick embryo gastroschisis model.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Prolonged exposure to amniotic fluid causes the intestinal changes such as serosal edema, thickening, fibrous coating, and adhesions in gastroschisis. The effect of amnio-allantoic fluid (AAF) pH on intestines was evaluated using a chick embryo gastroschisis model. METHODS: Seventy fertile eggs were divided into 5 groups: preliminary study (PS, n = 20), AAF control (AAC, n = 10), just gastroschisis (JG, n = 10), gastroschisis pretreated with placebo (GPP, n = 15), and gastroschisis pretreated with sodium bicarbonate (GPS, n = 15). The PS group was also divided into 2 subgr…

[Activity of various enzymes of energy metabolism in the rat kidney and intestines in vitamin D and K deficiency].

The vitamin D and K deficiency was studied for its effect on creatine kinase, phosphorylase and alkaline phosphatase activity of rat kidneys and intestinal mucosa. The results show that creatine kinase and phosphorylase activity of kidneys varies depending on the content of these vitamins, e.g. it is activated with vitamin D depletion irrespective of the vitamin K status and remains unchanged with the deficiency of vitamin K alone. In this case the vitamin D deficiency affects kidney phosphorylase and intestinal mucosa differently. Data obtained and those available in literature permit suggest

Characterization and mast cell origin of a chymotrypsin-like proteinase isolated from intestines of mice infected with Trichinella spiralis.

A proteinase was purified by cation exchange and affinity chromatography from the small intestines of mice infected with Trichinella spiralis. The enzyme was highly soluble and was chymotrypsin-like in its substrate specificities and susceptibility to inhibitors. It had a MW of 26,000, as determined by SDS-PAGE electrophoresis. Antibodies raised against the proteinase were affinity purified and their specificity confirmed by Western blot analysis. When used to localize the enzyme immunohistochemically, they reacted with granules of mast cells in the epithelium and lamina propria of the parasit…
