Association of Thyroid Function and Hormone Sensitivity With Abdominal Fat in Individuals With Overweight and Obesity.

AIMS: The association between thyroid function and body fat distribution remains controversial, particularly regarding visceral and liver fat depots, which are highly predictive of cardiometabolic risk. We aimed to assess the associations of thyroid hormone levels and indices of thyroid hormone sensitivity with abdominal fat depots in adults with overweight and obesity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 272 adults (53.3% women) with a mean body mass index (BMI) of 32.9 (5.9) kg/m2. Thyroid function parameters (TSH, FT4, FT3, TT4RI, TSHI, FT3/FT4) and abdominal fat dis

Association of Visceral Adiposity With Pain but Not Structural Osteoarthritis.

OBJECTIVE: Osteoarthritis (OA) and pain are both made more severe by low-grade inflammation. This study was undertaken to examine whether visceral fat, a major source of inflammatory cytokines and adipokines, is associated with an increased risk of knee OA or musculoskeletal pain. METHODS: Subjects in the Multicenter Osteoarthritis Study cohort, who were age 50-79 years and had or were at high risk of knee OA, underwent whole-body dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) at baseline. At baseline, 30 months, and 60 months radiographs and magnetic resonance images (MRIs) of the knees were obtained, and

Anthropometric measures and their association with risk factors for cardio-metabolic diseases in Kenyan adults.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of cardio-metabolic diseases (CMD) is drastically increasing worldwide. Anthropometric measures of fat accumulation are correlated with CMD and Metabolic Syndrome (MS), but few studies have addressed this association in sub-Saharan African populations. AIM: To investigate the association between anthropometric features, MS and other CMD risk factors in a population from Kenya. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study including 1405 Kenyans, anthropometric measurements including visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT)

Impact of visceral fat ratio on sleep-related erection: a retrospective study of elderly patients.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the impact of visceral fat accumulation on the preoperative erectile function of elderly patients undergoing radical prostatectomy. METHODS: A total of 83 patients who underwent radical prostatectomy from August 2005 through August 2013 were included in the present study. Findings at preoperative computed tomography scanning and sleep-related erection were used to determine the objective erectile function. Sleep-related erection was measured with an erectometer during at least three nights, and we assessed the maximum penile circumferential change. The visceral fat

Visceral abdominal obesity measured by CT scan is associated with an increased risk of Barrett's oesophagus: a case-control study.

OBJECTIVE: Abdominal obesity has been associated with increased risk of Barrett's oesophagus (BE) but the underlying mechanism is unclear. We examined the association between visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) and the risk of BE. DESIGN: A case-control study among eligible patients scheduled for elective oesophagastroduodenoscopy (EGD) and in a sample of patients eligible for screening colonoscopy recruited at the primary care clinic. All cases with definitive BE and a random sample of controls without BE were invited to undergo standardised mid-abdomen non-co

The male abdominoplasty.

Men have a larger body surface area, distinguishing physical characteristics, and unique aesthetic concerns that present a different therapeutic challenge from women. The primary area of disappointment in males is the inability to alter the intra-abdominal submuscular fat compartment where fat redistributes with advancing age, resulting in enlarged abdominal girth. In general, men who have not experienced large weight fluctuations present with skin of good quality and tone and can benefit from liposuction surgery; those who have poor skin tone, with or without rectus muscle diastasis, may be c

Risk stratification in early-stage Cardiovascular-Kidney-Metabolic Syndrome: The Potency of visceral adiposity and insulin resistance surrogate indices.

Cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome defines a pathophysiological continuum linking obesity, metabolic dysfunction, chronic kidney disease, and cardiovascular disease. Stages 0-3 represent a critical subclinical window for reversible intervention, yet conventional risk stratification remains rudimentary. Body mass index (BMI) fails to capture visceral adiposity and metabolic heterogeneity. Recently, surrogate indices integrating anthropometric and metabolic data, such as waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), visceral adiposity index (VAI), and the metabolic score for visceral fat (METS-VF),

Skeletal muscle mass to visceral fat area ratio as a predictor of NAFLD in lean and overweight men and women with effect modification by sex.

The effect of sarcopenic visceral obesity on the risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is uncertain. We investigated (a) whether the skeletal muscle mass to visceral fat area ratio (SV ratio), as a measure of sarcopenic visceral obesity, is a risk factor for NAFLD; and (b) whether the SV ratio adds to conventional adiposity measures to improve prediction of incident NAFLD. Adults without NAFLD (n = 151,017) were followed up for a median of 3.7 years. Hepatic steatosis was measured using ultrasonography, and liver fibrosis scores were estimated using the Fibrosis-4 index (FIB-4) and

Adipose Tissue Compartments, Inflammation, and Cardiovascular Risk in the Context of Depression.

The neurobiological and behavioral underpinnings linking mental disorders, in particular, major depressive disorder (MDD), with cardiovascular disorders are a matter of debate. Recent research focuses on visceral (intra-abdominal and epicardial) adipose tissue and inflammation and their impact on the development of cardiometabolic disorders. Intra-abdominal adipose tissue is defined as an endocrine active fat compartment surrounding inner organs and is associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus, a risk factor for the later development of cardiovascular disorders. Epicardial (pericardial) adipose

Intraperitoneal injection of chloral hydrate causes intra-abdominal adhesions and unilateral testicular atrophy in golden Syrian hamsters.

We investigated the reason for the high mortality we had observed in hypophysectomized-orchidectomized Golden Syrian hamsters that were anesthetized with intraperitoneal (i.p.) injections of chloral hydrate (CH). Intact male Golden Syrian hamsters were injected intraperitoneally with 0.1cc/100g BW of a 35% solution of CH, a 35% solution of sodium chloride, or double-distilled water. Equal numbers of hamsters in each group were injected on the right or left side of the abdomen. Within 10 days, 35% of the CH-injected hamsters were dead or had to be euthanized. Autopsy revealed severe peritonitis

Systematic review: adipose tissue, obesity and gastrointestinal diseases.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is increasingly being recognized as a risk factor for a number of benign and malignant gastrointestinal conditions. However, literature on the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms is sparse and ambiguous. Insulin resistance is the most widely accepted link between obesity and disease, particularly colorectal cancer. The recognition that intra-abdominal fat is immunologically active sheds new light not only on the pathogenesis of obesity-related gastrointestinal conditions, but also on inflammatory conditions such as Crohn's disease. AIM: To describe the biology of adip…

Associations Between Visceral Fat, Abdominal Muscle, and Coronary Artery Calcification: A Cross-Sectional Analysis of the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis.

The associations of body composition components, including muscle and adipose tissue, and markers of subclinical coronary artery disease are unclear. We examined the relation between abdominal computed tomography (CT)-derived measures of the area and density of fat and muscle with coronary artery calcification (CAC), using data from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA). A total of 1,974 randomly selected MESA participants free of coronary heart disease underwent abdominal CT scans at examinations 2 or 3, with the resulting images interrogated for abdominal body composition. Using 6

Visceral adiposity index is positively associated with fasting plasma glucose: a cross-sectional study from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2017-2020.

BACKGROUND: Visceral adiposity index (VAI) has been recognized as a reliable indicator for visceral adiposity. However, it remains largely unexplored on its association with fasting plasma glucose (FPG). The current study aims to explore the association between VAI and FPG using a representative dataset. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out based on the dataset from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2017-2020. Univariate and Multiple linear regression analysis were performed to explore the relationship between VAI and FPG. Generalized additive model (GAM) a

Exercise-associated and metabolic effects of Cimicifuga racemosa extract Ze 450 in a high-fat diet model in female rats.

BACKGROUND: Physical inactivity and high-calorie diets are major drivers of obesity and metabolic disease. In a previous pilot study under physiological dietary conditions, Cimicifuga racemosa extract Ze 450 reduced visceral adiposity and leptin levels in female rats, suggesting exercise-like metabolic effects. Whether these effects persist under diet-induced metabolic stress remains unclear. This study investigated whether Ze 450 exerts exercise-associated metabolic effects in a high-fat (HF) diet model. METHODS: Non-ovariectomized female Wistar rats (n = 30) were randomized to standard diet

Visceral fat inflammation and fat embolism are associated with lung's lipidic hyaline membranes in subjects with COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: Preliminary data suggested that fat embolism could explain the importance of visceral obesity as a critical determinant of coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19). METHODS: We performed a comprehensive histomorphologic analysis of autoptic visceral adipose tissue (VAT), lungs and livers of 19 subjects with COVID-19 (COVID-19+), and 23 people without COVID-19 (controls). Human adipocytes (hMADS) infected with SARS-CoV-2 were also studied. RESULTS: Although there were no between-group differences in body-mass-index and adipocytes size, a higher prevalence of CD68+ macrophages among COV

Coronary Endothelial Dysfunction in People Living With HIV Is Related to Body Fat Distribution.

BACKGROUND: People living with HIV (PLWH) on antiretroviral therapy (ART) are at increased risk of atherosclerotic disease. Abnormal adipose distribution is common in PLWH and may contribute to atherosclerosis. Because coronary artery endothelial function (CEF) is impaired in early atherosclerosis, predicts future cardiovascular events, and is reduced in PLWH, we investigated associations between body fat distribution and CEF in PLWH. SETTING: Prospective cohort study. METHODS: PLWH on stable ART underwent MRI to quantify CEF, measured as change in coronary cross-sectional area from rest to
